Hoping we can carry on most of the future JT argument in here so the game threads are a little more enjoyable.

I'll be keeping track of Noodle Arm until he finally gets benched. If not for the YAC that saved the day there was a great chance he was going to get benched for game 2. Well, now we have to live with hime for the Oklahoma game, hopefully he doesn't cost OSU the game.

JT Barrett IV game tracker My definition of inaccurate throw is the reciever is open but the ball is uncachable My definition of a drop is any ball that a reciever got 2 hands on, or could get 2 hands on but decided to 1 hand it All other incompletions (ex deflections, tight coverage where a ball skips a yard in front of reciever) will be just incompletions All statistics I provide will NOT include balls thrown away. JT threw 3 away this game Last note, the yardage I'm using for ball thrown is the distance from LOS, so if OSU is on the 18 and JT throws a TD pass in the back of the enzone (27 yards downfield) I will include that in the 20-29 range.
JT was (7-7) on balls thrown behind the line of scrimmage JT was (9-10) on balls thrown 0-9 yards, 1 drop JT was (4-12) on balls thrown 10-19 yards. 1 drop, 4 inaccurate passes, drew an interference on a 13th throw JT was (0-1) on balls thrown 20-29 yards. 1 inaccurate pass JT was (0-0) on balls thrown 30-39 yards JT was (0-2) on balls thrown 40+ yards. 1 drop. 1 inaccurate pass, drew an interference on a 3rd throw
JT threw 3 balls away JT (16-17) throwing the ball 9 yards or less - only incompletion was a drop JT (4-15) throwing the ball (10+ yards downfield), 6 inaccurate throws, 2 drops JT's 20 completions went a total of 77 yards. Recievers added 227 in YAC So the average distance of a JT Barrett IV completion was 3.9 yards down field
Edit to add JT's 3 TD passes 2 yards down the field +72 YAC = 74 yard TD pass 11 yards down the field +48 YAC = 59 yard TD pass 11 yard TD pass
The only difference between JT Barrett IV in 2017 and JT Barrett IV in 2016 is the addition of IV to the back of his jersey Let's see how game 2 goes.

I couldn't imagine hating on JT so much you guys talk about him 24/7. He's always on your mind. He's starting at a premier college for once again another year. Urban knows more then any of us. And I trust his choice. The JT bashing is just pure ignorance.

Not impressed with his play 1st half, but he kicked it up 2nd half and finished with a very respectable 20-35 for 304 yds and 3 TD's, 365 yds total. We all know he can play at a much higher level and hope that's the case against the Sooners.

Interesting tidbit from the game. OSU offense was stagnant in the first half and JTIV wouldn't throw deep OSU offense looked like it needed to look in the second half. Why? Just look at the first 4 passes of the 2nd half by JT Barrett IV 18 yards downfield - incomplete 41 yards downfield - incomplete -1 yards 40 yards downfield - incomplete The 18 and 41 yard throws were both dropped and the 40 yard one JTIV missed a wide open receiver but the fact that he decided to STRETCH THE FIELD for the first time all game did wonders for the offense.
If JTIV throws deep balls vs OU then OSU can beat OU. If JTIV plays like he did in the first half, scared to throw deep then OU will beat OSU. A QB needs to throw deep to stretch the defense, that opens up the short passes and the run game.
Don't worry about your Noodle Arm JTIV, sling it as far as you can. Slinging a few down the field early will open up everything else.

I think the same way. The attempt, successful or not, does force the defense to adjust. And that is good in my eyes.

JT is a good QB. But he is not the qb who will win you the NC game. The stats do not lie, he struggles past 7-9 yards throwing. My neighbor, when I saw him the next day said "JT just looks timid while throwing, he isn't that good as some make him out to be". Im just glad to see some speed on the outside and wr's that can get open, catch the ball and make some huge YAC.

If you don't count passes dropped and passes thrown away, JT completed 77% of his passes.
JT's QB rating was twice as good as NFL QB candidate "Lego", who didn't throw away any of his passes.
Urban had a talk with Wilson at half time, suggesting they play smash mouth football and run the ball first to set up Wilson's pass plays.
I thought JT would have a couple of INT's in this game. Throwing it deep for the hell of it when his receiver was covered or forcing a mid-range pass when his receiver had a DB in his pocket. Neither happened. GOOD!!!

The Buckeyes need a manager and facilitator as a signal caller, playing within himself. There was talk from some that claimed to be in the know, saying Wilson would be forcing a lot more 50/50 plays. Not smart football and not what we saw Thursday night....good.

We need to take some more chances than we have been. I think we will see that this week, in the form of a deep ball or two on 1st & 10, mainly to keep the defense honest. Picks on deep balls are commensurate to an early punt, in most cases. But, when you're offense is enjoying a good balance of pass/run, no need to take chances that might hurt you and give your opponent a boost. I don't consider deep balls, taking chances though.

The issue is that in a spread offense your running game is predicated on spreading the defense out and finding seams. Part of spreading the defense out means they have to honor the vertical threat and not be able to bring the safeties up to load the box because there is no lead blocker going through the hole.

Monday, the Big Ten awarded J.T. Barrett with 'Co-Offensive Player of the Week' and Dobbins with 'Freshman of the Week'.
This is Barrett's seventh Big Ten weekly award in his career, which is fourth most in conference history. Barrett split his award with Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, who compiled 226 total yards and two touchdowns in a 52-0 win over Akron.

Leadership. Composure under pressure. Positive influence in the huddle. Ability to read defenses and make correct decisions. Avoiding turnovers. Experience.
These are qualities that coaches value highly in a QB and fans sometimes overlook. I don't think JT is as bad or as good as some of the debate argues. Coaches like Saban and Meyer feel like they have superior team talent & depth. They stress mistake-free football, execution and proper in-game adjustments to the game-plan. Jalen Hurts for Alabama just had 96 yards passing and a 29.5 QB rating in the win over #3 Fla St and I don't think Saban is upset with Hurts. JT had 304 yards passing and a 76.7 QB rating. Both had zero interceptions and zero fumbles.

Jalen didn't get a DUI and then a suspension and then a critical loss at home to a conference foe starting a backup QB.
The first time he does, he will probably get benched. And he will get roundly criticized. And Alabama fans will start to ask, what exactly have you won for us lately?
Hmm?

On throwing the deep ball. In Urban's presser today he said new QB Coach Ryan Day brought this concept from the NFL. It doesn't matter how many deep balls you throw, what does matter is the success rate of deep balls should be 60%. In the Indian game, if deep balls that could have been caught were caught, the TEAM would have met that 60% goal.

Look up his record for suspending players. On the hand maybe Saban hopes Hurt F's up. Saban had Hurt just throw 6 passes further than 5 yards down field, he only completed 2.

Barrett is awful...just awful enough to be named co-Big 10 offensive player of the week...shared the award with Barkley.

20 completions thrown a total of 77 yards downfield relative to the LOS for an avg of 3.9 yards down field per completion. 227 YAC saved OSU the game and Barrett IV his job. There is a reason why Barrett IV will not get drafted (4-15) on passes thrown 10+ yards downfield.
JK Dobbins would have been a much better choice for POW. But he's a true freshman and awards are based on politics and nothing else. So instead they give it to a 5th year senior. Anybody think Dobbins will stick around 5 years to rack up POW awards?

No, you were talking about "Jalen". THE first word in your post. The only QB mentioned by name in your post. He plays for Alabama who is coached by Nick Saban. The first course on writing in high school tells you to start your paragraph with the name of the person, place or thing, you're writing about. I thought you knew more about College football. I thought you knew more about the written word.

Jalen Hurst the QB for the #1 team in the country coached by the #1 coach in the county that played the #3 team in the country. In that game he just threw 6 passes longer than 5 yards and only completed 2 of those passes. That eliminates him from getting drafted. If you were knowledgeable, the passes with the YAC were called from the press box by Wilson. Called based on what the defense was giving, when they were dropping 8. They were thrown under the DEEP drop by the LBs. ALWAYS better to throw high % short passes that turn into 70 yard gains than throwing a much lower % 50 yard pass. Short passes are completed better than 90% of the time. What % of 50 yard passes in the air are completed by ALL QBs? Since you're always drooling over NFL QBs, how about this nugget. There were 31 starting QB's in the NFL last year, how many had a better winning % in college than JT's current 87%? 4 out of the 31. Joe Smith, Mariota, Winston and Newton. What position in the NFL has the shortest life span?? Even if you're going to get drafted in the last round, a running back should go as soon as they possibly can. What position has the longest life span? Why is it we only hear crickets when you're asked questions? ?
