I hear the reasoning all of the time that a kid is quitting one sport to prepare for another. However, I fail to see how NOT playing a winter sport(b ball, wrestling, swimming) can possibly help to prepare you better for track. Unless this kid somehow miraculously has access to an indoor track facility 5+ days a week, that is utter nonsense. Does Willard actually have an indoor track program that practices everyday for him to participate in? Yes they do have a indoor program with a great coach that takes them to meets all winter. These freshman that everyone talks about that can play football and basketball can also run! Jerett was on the 4x8 relay that won the NOL his freshman year and went to regionals and he has big goals this spring to repeat! Anymore questions from anyone?

We have all done things for something to do and not because we love it. Sometimes, in high school, kids realize they are approaching the end and start to think maybe I should focus more on what I love and less on something I have just been doing to occupy my time. I believe a kid can play basketball and be a good baseball player, but if the kid truly loves baseball and does basketball only because his friends do or his parents want him to then it is not hard to understand that this kid may enjoy being in the batting cages in the winter instead of being on the court. And it does not have to be 5+ days a week. With 7-8 hours of school, 3+ hours given to winter practice, then homework, meals and some resting, it doesn't leave much time for the sport he loves. With most winter sports taking 6 days a week, if your heart isn't in it, that sport can become more of an obstacle.

You my friend fully understand what some of these kids go through. I applaud you for such a rational response.

Just because every post does not highlight the talented kids we have playing does not mean we don't care about these kids that are playing. It is a conversation and if you don't like, don't respond.

On a separate note I see Willard is scrimmaging colonel Crawford today, good test for the Flashes as Crawford will have a very good team.

moneyball...from the way my friend tells the story, Sowers did run indoor track and got a lot of grief from it from the other bball players last year. I have witnessed a lot just walking around the Willard School Campus that explains Willard's athletic problems...a bunch of self promoters that really care little about team success and more about individual accolades. Individuals that care more what's on the back of the uniform than what's on front. Maybe Sowers saw that in the basketball program and wanted nothing to do with it. I was talking to a parent of a kid that didn't go out this year and he told me kids on the basketball team eat their own. They don't hang out, there is a lot of jealousy over playing time, bitching and moaning over on court breakdowns, small clicks, ect. I agree, that this years bball team has a lot of potential. Scrappers, height, jumpers, a few shooters, things that could give teams problems in the middle division. But until the kids realize that it is a TEAM sport then people around the community might as well get used to 5 and 17, 6 and 16 seasons.

Anybody hear how todayโs scrimmage went?

Basketball is great for track, anyone that says otherwise is just foolish.

My question was do they practice everyday? Galion has an indoor track program as well and go to meets all winter too. However they only work out a couple of times a week and go up to Tiffin occasionally to work on field events. That, in my opinion, does not equate to being in a full time sport during the winter. Heck, some kids do both. They do their sport and go to the meets that don't pose scheduling conflicts. I completely understand what your son is going through and feels. When I was in high school I absolutely hated wrestling. But the benefits from it for football and track made the misery worth it.

Heck, some kids do both. They do their sport and go to the meets that don't pose scheduling conflicts. I completely understand what your son is going through and feels. When I was in high school I absolutely hated wrestling. But the benefits from it for football and track made the misery worth it. I agree with you 100 percent and as I said before my husband and I would have liked nothing more than to see him play. Because like everyone has said and we have told him 10 or 20 years from now you will regret it. The simple fact is he didn't want to play that bad that he made a choice ( actually back in the summer) his choice and at 17 he will live and he will learn. There is nothing more to it than he didn't want to play and he feels he is dedicated and strong enough to work this winter at weights and running. regardless of what everyone thinks there is no game being played to hurt the coaches or team we still want what is best for our kid. We feel that was basketball and he did not. So we will support him and continue to push him to do well in whatever he chooses! I understand he would have made a difference out there for them and I wish I could have seen what he could do! Nothing more to say so continuing to talk about it isn't helping anyone these decisions happen everyday!

Two pages of who is not on the team and zero talk about how they have played. I think maybe the elephant is more than a mascot in the room.๐๐ Kids not playing, parent states why and it still gets more talk than what the thread is about...

You know, maybe bigox is right. This here subject is about Willard Basketball Scrimmages and not about one young man's decision on weather to play BBall this year or not. May I suggest that maybe you should start another post if y'all want to continual this please.

Willard doesn't eat their own, this is 2 people (maybe 2, might be 1 person with 2 accounts who knows). It's not the entire city, every city has this going on Willard's no different.
In Norwalk they have a great girls soccer player, and the other parents on the team were horribly jealous of her and the coverage she received instead of being thankful their kids got to play on a competitive team (mostly thanks to the superstar).
JS's mom came on here as herself and took on all questions, they have probably died down now and now we'll see what really matters. W's & L's. Good luck Flashes.

Crickets...... Still nothing on how they played Wednesday vs. Col. Crawford or the rest of the scrimmages? Must not be very proud of how they looked.

Not sure how they did but I usually don't put much weight into scrimmages. They kind of remind me of NFL preseason where my Browns were 4-0 and look where they are now. So if the Flashes lost this could mean good things for them in the regular season.

Some would say, if you win every scrimmage you need to scrimmage better teams.

Willard could count on the gals over the last several years to make up for the total vacuum the boys programs become, but maybe that runs ended too.

Odd, they seemed like they had all the pieces of the puzzle to be a pretty good team this year. I'm sure their outside shooting is a weak spot but their inside game should be relatively good.

Positive thoughts: The Jv team won handily. Possibility exists upper is very very good, time will tell.
