Regardless of the procedure, I never remembered who won a most outstanding athlete award at any of the track meets I ever went to. It didn't matter to me or anyone on our team. Kids aren't stupid, it isn't hard to see if someone is significantly quicker than another and that is what stands out. When I was a senior, I ran against Peninsula Woodridge in the 4x800, if you could even call it running. They broke the state record by 10 seconds that year (7:37? 7:39?) and went to nationals. They could have run one race at the meet we were with them and I would've given them that award.

If you're setting a new record in an event, that needs to be looked at as well. If you score 40 points lets say and someone else scored 20, but sets one or two records in those 20 points, yeah I am picking the kid who set the record. I remember the twins from Shelby, those boys could fly if it was 300M and further. Well that and the 110M Hurdles. I still remember watching them surpass us at the 2004 State Finals to take the crown. Ah, yes. The Wechter boys were ridiculous. Austin led Shelby to back-to-back state championships. He captured state titles in the 110M & 300M, in addition to the 4x400. At the time, he set the DII standard for the 300M at 36.69 and owned the DII State Meet record time of 36.83. Not sure if these still stand anymore. Went on to have a very successful indoor/outdoor track career at Notre Dame.

When the Whechter twins graduated Shelby, they owned state records in the 4x400 and the 300H. The 4x400 record has since fallen, but the 300H record remains. I have no way of verifying it, but apparently the 300H time was the fastest in the nation the year Austin ran it. I used to be in a small bicycling group in Shelby and the Whechter twins father was in that group. He had the 200M record at Ohio Northern for a brief period. It's in the family.

utsherman,
I remember the Shelby invite my sophomore year and being blown away, they just never slowed down.
His 300m time should still be standing, that year in 04 D2 had some great hurdlers. Keys from Bellevue, Martin from Clyde. Martin IMO had the speed over Wechter, but Wetcher had the endurance to outlast him.
Now this is dating me, but I remember watching Eric Barrison as a sophomore turn out a 10.55 at Lexington in 02.... F*uckin fast booouyyy.
6 of the Div II, records belong guys from this area, I think that’s pretty darn special.

Congratulations to Norwalk pole vaulters Owen Rhodes & Jake Sommers! Both are moving on to the state tournament next week.
Owen placed 2nd at the Amherst regional with a new school record of 15 feet! (previous record was 14' 6") Jake placed 3rd with a vault of 14' 8".
Exciting to think that after roughly 30 years of no pole vault at Norwalk, we have 2 state contenders within just a couple years of the event returning. These boys have put in so much time and effort into training - I'm so happy to see it pay off for them!

She threw the discus on Friday. Beautiful (hot) day, but a nice breeze. The officials at Amherst were top-notch. The best we've seen - announced loudly, kept the warm-ups moving in a timely pace so as not to allow the girls to overthrow, and had senses of humor!
Unfortunately, she will not be moving on. She just didn't get it done, but it gave her a taste and she's got a couple of camps this summer. A few adjustments with her reverse and she should be in good shape next season. Her coach also ordered indoor equipment, so both girls will compete this winter season in the shot and hammer.
Should be fun!
Thanks for asking.

The girl who won the discus at the NW DI regional is quite an athlete! She also placed 3rd in the shot earlier in the week. From Lima Senior and is built like a softball outfielder - lean! She had warm-ups in the 140's. Then threw an 85' to start things off. Shocked the crowd watching. Her second throw fouled to the right of the sector. She kept her composure for the third throw and fired off a 119' something to advance to the finals. In the finals she advanced with a 128' toss.

Picabo, Tell your daughter that I'm sorry that she didn't make it to state this year but keep learning and develop her skills and I will keep watching for her to get to state next year.

As was our district, our second girl went 121 and didn't make it out. 3 of the 4 regional qualifiers from there moved on to state.

So I was looking at the participants for the boys DI-DIII participants and we have boys in the following events.
4x8, 4x4, 4x2, 4x1, 100, 200, 110, 300, 400, 800, 1600, PV, LJ, HJ, DT, SP. Ladies and Gentlemen we have someone somewhere in every event for the state track meet, except one! That is truly amazing and a great attestment of the quality of athletes in the area.
My Pirates are looking and should be in the hunt for a top 3 finish, if the guys can go down there and take care of business. I have to give Hunter a shout out too, he is the first Pirate to participate in 4 events at the state track meet, since the late great Aaron "Ice" Richardson, did in 2004.
Good luck to all and hopefully be see plenty of top 4 finishes from the area guys.

Picabo, I would like to congratulate you and your daughter for her award she received at the track banquet. Picabo's daughter received The Tracy Meyer's Most Dedicated Award in girls track. Along with her was Haleigh Skinner (MIP), Mascie Horner (Bill Ream Coaches Award), Jasmine Thomas (MVP), Bethany Cring (MVP), Kaelyn Harkness (MVP), and Jada Thomas (MVP). On the boys side it's Owen Rhodes (Reynold Blevins Most Dedicated), Julian Go (Mick Simon Memorial Award), Chris Tuttle (MVP), and Mitchell Sommers (MIP). Congratulation to these students from Norwalk High. Picabo, I forgot to tell you that I cut the pitcher out of the paper and I'll give it to your mother when I would see her for our meeting next week.

Well she worked very hard at it and the coaches saw the dedication she put in this year. She deserves it and when she continues with that same dedication then next year if things go right she should make it down to Columbus.

Congrats to Tevin Stewart (junior) who qualified in 4 events at the state meet. Long Jump, 400, 4x2, and 4x4. I don't recall anyone in the area who has participated in 4 events at the state level. That is a phenomenal accomplishment.

Streaknation
Aaron Richardson went in three events in 04 and Hunter also went in 4 this year. I would have to look back at the prior meets to see if anyone else did.
If someone from Edison area can help out I thought Batt May have went in 4 events in 02 or 03.

You are correct about the other two gentlemen on that 2004 track team. It was a lot of fun getting to hang out work out and be on the same team as them.

Chad Johnson from Colonel Crawford broke the 3200 State Record for DIII today. I think he ran a 9:05 and the record was 9:09. Man, that guy is like a machine. No one was within 150 yards of him after the 1st lap.

Now imagine watching Scott Fry run it. I watched it on video once, blew my mind.
So the area athletes had a great showing at state. Not where they would have liked to been in most final standings but they represented the area very well!!! Congrats guys and girls you all deserve a round of applause!!!
