I enjoy how critical people find the non-conference scheduling to whether or not a team will find success. I agree that playing tougher competition breeds a higher level of competency when facing subsequent high-caliber teams. But let's be real, upgrading one's schedule is usually not the difference between life and death in the first two rounds of the playoffs for football (or Districts/Regionals in basketball, what have you). Unless your team is steamrolling everybody ala Norwalk basketball 2011-12 through 2013-14, or you have pronounced, consistent success ala Clyde/Bellevue since the 90s, then your team better focus on going undefeated. Trust your conference schedules, folks. This scheduling nonsense is one big lousy excuse for the fact that your team couldn't get it done or you want to drive somewhere local. Too bad. Be an adult about it. I'd rather have local teams refuse to play me and essentially be assured 7-11 wins in a season than the other way around. Shelby has had a near identical non-conference schedule since 2000 (I did a post on this somewhere, where basically Clyde, Tiffin, Bellevue, and Norwalk shake-up their non-conference schedule WAY more than Shelby does). How many Shelby teams couldn't get it done because they didn't have the most robust schedule possible? 2017? And even then, what was really holding 2017 Shelby back in that 35-22 loss to Steubenville? The fact they didn't try to play Sandusky or Clinton-Massie or Lorain or whoever in the regular season or the fact that Steuby was better? If Shelby had played Steubenville's schedule that year, would Shelby have had the mettle to take down the Big Red? Maybe, but I'm not writing an op-ed piece about it. Huron wasn't going to beat Van Wert no matter what non-conference schedule they rolled out. Shoot, until Huron is downright spanking everybody, I don't see the point in them going through Clyde, Tiffin, Bellevue, etc. when they are going to lose to Port Clinton and Oak Harbor. I swear, it is endless crying or shaming of schedules from some of you. It matters, but the bellyaching about it is so overplayed on here it's insane. Probably a top 3 post I’ve read on this site

Especially ones that would argue that local Lake teams wouldn't play bay teams because they are mad they won't schedule. they would jump on it.

That wasn't specifically at you, it was targeted to many random comments I've seen on here. By far it is the vocal minority, but there is a pattern of it.
Shelby loses in the final four. "Should've scheduled up."
Norwalk loses in the final four. "Should've scheduled up."
Those people you want to defend themselves probably won't, because 99% of arguments about scheduling are rooted in some form of excuse or personal complaint. Norwalk playing Monroeville in basketball when they had Haraway and Thomas was a legitimate gripe. This whole "(insert Lake team) won't/will play (insert Bay team) but (insert Lake/Bay team) is being a turd about it" stuff is mostly garbage. If a girl doesn't want to date a person, it isn't becoming of that person to get worked up all over it. I don't care how local it is, there is no obligation by these teams to play one another.

Cripe, Steubenville doesn't usually play that great of a schedule, themselves. Most are out of state; about 10 years ago, Little Red went 8-3 with all 3 losses being to the only Ohio teams they played.

steubenville suffers from having been good and competitive for so long that no one wants to schedule them either. however, they do always want to play at home

That's moreso in their local area, including some in Weirton, WV. They dropped Massillon recently as Tigers got the better of them for 6 years although to Big Red credit, they soundly beat Tigers their last meeting. At any rate, the Ohio schools cthey schedule are usually ones they know they can beat consistently. Their Region typically isn't that competitive, so basically vit works for them. If they scheduled like a typical Ohio power, maybe 6-4 program on yearly basis.

So if they scheduled like a typical Ohio D4 school they would be undefeated most years. Second, their playoff and state championship success would suggest that they would be better than 6-4 regardless. Lastly, they don't really belong to a conference so they have to schedule independently. I highly doubt that there are a bunch of Ohio teams knocking on their door to come play them. Maybe Bellevue or Norwalk or Clyde would like to step up to the plate and take on this 6-4 program instead of complaining that the Bay schools won't give them easy victories.

As I said, when the schedule isn't as competitive as it could for a program like that, nor their Region, sure, they will win playoff games and an occasional state title. Trust me; I know their history. When they play a schedule that's competitive, they're fair at best, and this goes back to late 70s from their days in the All-american conference. Finally, as mentioned, they always have to play at home.

Shelby, for selfish and historical purposes, I would very much like Bellevue and Huron hooking up again. As a sidenote, Huron benefited 20+ years ago having Bellevue on the schedule and a competitive SBC to make a few Final Four runs including runner-up in 93.

Solid point, and really don't want to talk much regarding them other than to state their preparation wasn't greater than Shelby's in 2017.

Good point. Not that it would of made a total difference in the outcome but I bet a lot of people didn't know Shelby was with out two starters thatgame and they played both sides of the ball. One was a linemen and the other a WR-DE. It might of helped the outcome!?!? Definitely a game changer to prepare the kids.

You are talking about Shelby in 2016.
However, Shelby in 2017 was missing a 3 year starter on defense and Shorty was in no way his usual self after turning his ankle against St. Marys.
I don't know if we got Steubenville's 100% strength both years, but they positively did not have Shelby's.

we want to play the best. feel honored its you! sportsvideo with the homer comment of the night. The scuttle was Huron didn't want to play Bellevue in football anymore. Let's be honest, when Huron was scheduling Norwalk, they didn't know they would be as good as they were last year. Don't even bring up the scrimmage because its a scrimmage. If Huron wants to play the best then they outta beef up that non league schedule, they coulda played bellevue, clyde, tiffin, in one of those open weeks. They don't want to play them and soon they will weasel out of the Norwalk contract. being sarcastic friend! so take a chill pill and have a merry christmas..

When putting a schedule together and you have 3 options for 1 game slot, a 20% chance for a win, a 50% chance for a win and a 80% chance for a win. A lot of coach say it but not many actually do it. Football is different than other sports so many will take the best chance for a win even if it keeps them out of playoffs because that can be blamed on the system if they go 8-2. Nobody wants to go 6-4 against good teams most would rather be 8-2 or 9-1 even if the schedule has hand picked wins.

I don’t know if anyone here has any interest in this, but former Clyde coach Marc Gibson resigned on Tuesday as Maumee’s head football coach.

If you have to ask that question you don't know anything about our coach. Next time I'm with him in the field house or talk to him I will ask and see what he has to say about the Bay. I'm pretty sure I know what he thinks about the schools that won't play us from the bay. You have no clue!!!! Wait a minute, its one thing if they are mad the bay schools won't play, its another to say that if Huron, OH, Edison, Vermilion wanted to play Bellevue that they would say no. I would sumise that Bellevue would play those schools if they wanted to play. Yes I'm sure they would play Non-league games with the teams that would make sense. The point I was talking about was moving to the bay division would make no sense for computer points. I'm sure the AD and Coach "N" would love to cut some travel down and play local schools that make sense. I would guess only Huron, PC, and Vermillion being the same DIV size. Other then those I can't see them playing any of the smaller schools. JMO
