This is Shelby’s first year in the MOAC.
Like to see some post about some of the other MOAC Cross country teams.
I know Buckeye Valley Boys have won 8 straight titles, but it looks like the Shelby Boys may have something to say about BV winning a 9th.
With the graduation of the reigning D2 state champ BV’s Zach Kreft who do you pick to win the boys MOAC CC title this year.

Meet 5 9-8-2018
Shelby Boys just won the D2 Varsity race at the Tiffin Carnival today.
44 teams 304 runners 651 total D2 boys running today when adding the open race.
Top 6 teams were 1 Shelby 60, 2 Bay 91, 3 Akron SVSM 111, 4 Tippecanoe 156, 5 Chardon NDCL 168, 6 Lexington 203
Shelby Runners were 2 Caleb Brown 15:52, 3 Sam Logan 16:02, 11 Blake Lucius 16:45, 15 Sam Swanger 16:57, 29 Corbin Osborne 17:23, 66 Caden Payne, 93 Jaden Sickmiller.
This was a nice win against some quality opponents. Last time Shelby won this meet was back in 1979 and that was back before it turned into the mega meet it is today. Races back then were 2.5 miles compared to these days where they run 3.1
Brown and Logan were in great form again both are running strong and Lucius also had a very strong performance today. Glad to see Swanger make it to the meet after taking the ACT that morning. Last year Tyler Green did not make to the meet in time after taking it. Swanger after getting up at 5:00 and taking a 3 hour test then rushing to the meet and running in the 16’s that was a great race. I don’t think we win that race had you not made it there. Osborne also had a really nice race Payne had a bit of an off day for him and this was just Sickmiller’s 2nd full race of the season hope he gets back fully healthy he could add some quality depth. Riley Fackler was the top Shelby runner in the open race placing 12th running 18:12
Complete list of the 44 teams in order of their finish from the varsity race Shelby, Bay, Akron SVSM, Tippecanoe, Chardon NDCL, Lexington, Decatur Bellmont, Mil. Edison, Lake Cath., Fairview, Liberty Benton, Wauseon, Willard, Garfield, Ottawa Glandorf, Eastwood, Huron, Genoa Area, Benedictine, Padua Franciscan, South Range, Bellevue, Keystone, Upper Sandusky, Valley View, Ontario, Luth. West, Napoleon, Buckeye Valley, Clark Montessori , Versailles, Berkshire, Oak Harbor , Fairless, Sand Perkins, Otsego, Pleasant, Bryan, Brookside, Port Clinton, Black River, River Valley, Fostoria, Clear Fork

We will have a more clear picture of the MOAC after this weekend this will be the first I have seen Harding.
Galion and Harding are running at he Galion CC Invite.
But they will not run head to head against the Whippets. Coach Z bumped the Shelby boys varsity up into the D 1 race.
Shelby girls and the open will be in the D 2 race

Just going by the boys D2 state meet score last year Shelby 164 Buckeye Valley 249 I think Shelby would have won the MOAC in 2017. Even with BV having the great runner Zach Kreft.
Much respect to BV and to Zach he is a great young man. He became friends with some of the Shelby runners over this past summers. I know Zach has been here and run with them.
The Shelby team last year had more depth with Moore and Green on the team along with the current top five of this year. But the boys on the team this year have improved. The front end of the team this year is faster than last year.

Meet 6 9-15-2018
Shelby varsity boys won the D1 race at the Galion Cross Country Festival today.
25 teams 170 runners in the D1 varsity race plus two D1 open races making a total of 565 D1 boy runners today
Shelby runners went 1 Brown 15:58, 7 Logan, 16 Swanger, 29 Lucius, 30 Osborne
Top eight teams 1 Shelby 83, 2 Ashland 114, 3 Worthington Kilbourne 142, 4 Louisville 154, 5 Brecksville 161, 6 Olentangy 181, 7 St Edwards 198, 8 Strongsville
Coach Z bumped the D2 Whippets up into the D1 race today to push the team and it paid off with an impressive win against some much larger schools.
Ashland is currently the 6th ranked D1 team in the state.
Heat index was at 94 at the start of the race. The bright sun and heat kept times a little slower but this was still a nice win for the Whippets. Again Brown’s first place was over some quality runners that included Ashland’s Daniel Arimi who frequents times in the 15’s as well. Logan and Swanger ran impressive races, a strong kick at the end by Swanger kept 3 of our runners in front of Ashland’s number 2 runner. Osborne had another great day. Lucius placed well even on a day he was not feeling 100%. Nice to see Sickmiller back in the 17’s we need Payne and Sickmiller to keep dropping times they could be a critical pieces at the state level.
Complete list of the 25 teams in order of their finish 1 Shelby, 2 Ashland, 3 Worthington Kilbourne, 4 Louisville, 5 Brecksville, 6 Olentangy, 7 St Edwards, 8 Strongsville, 9 Columbian, 10 New Albany, 11 Granville, 12 Norwalk, 13 Walsh Jesuit, 14 Watkins Memorial, 15 Troy, 16 Licking Heights, 17 Cuyahoga Falls, 18 Marysville, 19 Dover, 20 Wapakoneta, 21 Wadsworth, 22 Delaware Hayes, 23 Madison, 24 Westland, 25 Marion Harding

At this year’s MOAC race I would not be surprised to see Shelby boys take 6 of the top 7 spots. Galion runner Braxton Tate will be in one of those top 7 spots just not sure where. Unless there is a MOAC runner out there that I have not seen or an injury changes things this is what I see happening. Shelby boys should win scoring under 20.
Now on the girls side I would give the edge to BV, Ontario has a nice team but BV has been finishing ahead of them at meets this year and with one of the top girls in the state in Chloe Dawson BV just looks too strong. Shelby has a nice lead runner in Heimlich but as of now have not shown enough depth to make a run at the team title. I know the Shelby girls have a couple runners that have been out Camryn Hummel and Kayla Evans. Hummel is out for the season but if Evans can make it back soon and get enough races in before the end of the season she may be able to add some needed depth. Both of these girls are good and would be varsity runners. Was sorry to hear Camryn was out for the season she is a nice girl and a talented runner I hope Kayla can make it back soon.
But remember you can never count your chickens too early in this sport, it is a long grueling season. In 2016 Shelby boys were probably at least a top 10 - 12 team in the state. But do to injuries didn’t make it to state. With Friebel having mono, Moore getting shin splints, and Lucius and Green having knee issues. It was too much to back fill in behind the young whippets left a Freshman Brown and 2 Sophomores Logan, Swanger.

Anyone on here see the Mansfield News Journals online coverage of the Galion Cross Country Festival. The online article has a full page written about Lex and two sentences about Shelby. Hey News Journal Lex is not a Mansfield school either you can’t claim them. This is in no way a bash on Lex they’re a great team with one of the best coach’s in the sport and deserve being talked about. But come on N.J. Shelby has one of the best CC teams in the state this year and that’s your coverage? Richland Source does a much better job covering sports.

I went ahead and changed the thread title and added Shelby CC 2018 . No disrespect to the rest of the league but it looks like this thread may continue for a few weeks after the MOAC is over. Plus I don’t want anyone looking for Shelby to overlook them being tucked away in the MOAC thread. I know we have people out of town that want to follow this team and changing three leagues in three years people may have forgotten where we are this year.
I will continue to post the info I find out about other league teams as well.
