The NOL moved to the SBC Lake Division. Willard was always going to leave the NOL, that left Tiffin, Sandusky, Norwalk, Bellevue, Ontario & Shelby. What did you want the NOL to do add Calvert, SMCC, SJCC, Lakota, Gibsonburg, etc and become a 20 team Conference like the SBC, just to keep the NOL name even though the only remaining NOL teams would be Tiffin, Bellevue & Norwalk (3 teams?). Galion, Upper, Bucyrus, Willard & Shelby wanted no part of a league like that.
The SBC died like the Cleveland Browns, keeping the name and records but looks nothing like the SBC we grew up on. The NOL died and did what most dead conferences do, leave the name dead
The SBC name lives on but it's not the SBC rivalries we remember Margaretta is way down in the river and never sees Clyde anymore. Huron, PC, OH and Edison ditched Clyde for the Bay Division
What basically happened was: the NOL merged with Clyde and Perkins - and decided to call themselves the SBC Lake Division the SBC merged with Willard & Shelby - and decided to call themselves the SBC Bay Division Margaretta left the SBC & joined a small league - and decided to call themselves the SBC River Division
Shelby has already ditched the SBC Bay, and look for Willard to ditch the SBC Bay within the next 5 years. Shelby got tired of every team in their division being located on Lake Erie, look for Willard to grow tired of that travel very soon.
Keep pretending the SBC is still the SBC. Where are the Margaretta vs Clyde battles? Where are the Huron vs Clyde battles for the SBC crown?
Oh that's right Clyde doesn't play Huron anymore, Clyde plays Tiffin, Norwalk, Sandusky, Bellevue, aka Clyde joined the NOL and left its SBC rivals behind but demanded the NOL rename itself SBC LAKE Division

The NOL was in peril the minute Bucyrus decided to leave. They were blasted even years later on the old site for leaving. As time has proven, Bucyrus made the right decision and fits perfectly geographically, competitively, and size wise in the N10. I was not wild about Galion leaving the NOL but now that we are in the MOAC, I like how it has worked out. I do miss the competition from Bellevue, Tiffin, Norwalk, Willard, and especially Shelby but at least Shelby is now part of the MOAC. I think had the leadership of the NOL been more proactive and willing to adapt when Bucyrus was still around, it would still exist.

Good Lord dude, if you really feel the need to troll me this badly could you at least have the courtesy to do it within a day or so of the post that I made? Hey Snowflake, I'll read the page when I want to read it. And when I do, if I feel the desire to write something, I will post it. If you do not like how it works, tough. Or you can keep whining and i'll get another chuckle. Apparently you did not see the emoji, I was trying to be funny, but i guess I hurt your feelings. I hope you have your safe space ready. I would have replied that way regardless of who said it. Wow, snowflake, talk about lacking a sense of humor.

I think had the leadership of the NOL been more proactive and willing to adapt when Bucyrus was still around, it would still exist. Yeah, it could still exist in name, but it wouldn't look anything like the NOL of 30 years ago. It would be like the SBC now with Clyde no longer playing Huron, Oak Harbor, Port Clinton, Edison, Margaretta, SMCC <--- That's not SBC we knew, that's Clyde joining the NOL because now they play Tiffin, Norwalk, Sandusky, Bellevue, but naming itself the SBC Lake Division.
The SBC we knew from 10, 20, 30 years ago still exists in name but the rivalries are all gone. Perkins and Clyde now play former NOL schools and not their longtime SBC rivals SMCC & Margaretta are down in the river playing SJCC, Calvert, Lakota, Danbury, Gibsonburg and not playing their longtime rivals of the SBC A small little Bay division of Huron, PC, OH and Edison still exists that contains the SBC of 10 years ago. Just 4 teams left.
^^^The NOL could have done that too. But Galion vs Tiffin for league Titles wouldn't be going on because if the NOL expanded Galion wasn't going to stay in the same division as Tiffin.
I don't think the reshuffle is done. Shelby ditched the SBC Bay Division quick and I expect Willard to ditch the Bay Division within 5 years too. PC and OH might join a league to the West. I see the SBC Lake expanding to pick up what's left of the Bay but I don't see the Bay division existing in 10 years.

The Northern 10 Athletic Conference has 9 members. Expect Willard to send in an application by the end of the year if they can't get above .500 in football this year. If they happen to get above .500 then expect them to send in an application next year when they get pounded by 50+ in all their Bay games.
That will leave the SBC Lake with 6 teams and Bay with 5. Not good.

There are currently only eight football playing members of the N10. It is my understanding that Willard inquired a couple of years ago before Ridgedale dropped out of the N10 football wise. There was no interest in having Willard join because the situation at Ridgedale was anticipated by some at the time. I don't think Willard will get a different response now or in the future unless the situation in the N10 changes, which in my opinion is unlikely, in the foreseeable future.

Ridgedale still has a football team though, they are just playing an independent schedule of cream puffs to try to boost moral. Once moral is improved expect them to want to play Conference foes.
If you click on the image it will enlarge. Using Google Earth only 1 Bay Division school is within 25 straight miles of Willard, while 6 N-10 schools are within 25 straight miles of Willard. Shelby got tired of driving to Lake Erie for every game in the Bay (and Shelby walks to Willard). Expect Willard to get tired very quickly too. Willard won't be winning 50-0 like Shelby but instead losing 50-0, which equals double tired of it.

Shelby got tired of driving to Lake Erie for every game in the Bay More like "Shelby wasn't thrilled about the prospect of driving to the Bay schools for football and knew going in that the SBC was just a temporary landing spot until something better came up" You can't exactly say they "got tired" of something they hadn't even done yet. Shelby had already voted to leave the SBC before they had played a single game in it.

I completely understand Willard's situation, but their entry to the N10 will not be about what they want. Just to play along though, let's say Ridgedale get's some "moral". The following N10 scenario might be interesting:
North - Upper, Carey, Mohawk, Seneca East, Willard.
South - Ridgedale, Wynford, Bucyrus, Col. Crawford, Buckeye Central
Of course then you have the whole crossover situation, who plays who, non conference schedule, etc. I don't think there is a whole lot of sentiment in the N10 to go through all that again. I think that there is sentiment that Willard had their chance when the N10(NCC) schools needed them, and there won't be any favors done for them now. I think a major realignment among several conferences like what happened about 5 years ago is the only way you'll ever see Willard in the same conference as the majority of the N10 schools.

IF Ridgedale doesn't get "moral"......how close is Elgin to the other 5 southerners?

IF Ridgedale doesn't get "moral"......how close is Elgin to the other 5 southerners? All else remaining the same within the N10..............not close enough to be the 9th team for an 8 team football conference. Eight is great.

What I was wondering..... IF Ridgedale left or God forbid dropped footballl would Elgin be an acceptable 10th school, size wise and geographically, for the N10? Assuming Willard wanted to join.

In my opinion Elgin would be an acceptable replacement for Ridgedale under your scenario. The problem with your scenario is that if Ridgedale's vacancy became permanent, nothing changes for the N10 football wise from what it is currently. They like all of the advantages of an 8 team league and in my opinion their is no desire to try to go to 10 just because they can. Tried that once, it didn't work out. Now, if Ridgedale comes back and makes it 9 again, they'll cross that bridge then. They might go for Willard, then again, Elgin is not far from your "southern" schools.

Problem is our "southern schools" all offer wrestling, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls golf, boys and girls swimming, and boys and girls soccer. It would literally be an AD's nightmare for them to join the N10.

Just saying it's a good thing for your girls tennis team that the "NOL" no longer exists or there would be no conference championship for them this season. Galion ran from the NOL a long time ago. If the NOL still did exist Galion would not be winning anything in it. Well, that's your opinion, and opinions are like *******s; everybody's got one, and they all stink !

It's not really my opinion, it's how a former Galion football and basketball player described it to me when we were talking about them leaving the NOL a few years back. Needless to say he was not happen about the change.

It's true Shelby did not get tired of the drive and is very true they never wanted to. With the action that took place it is obvious the SBC was on option they never wanted.

Shelby told the SBC when they joined it could be short term, they accepted them all the same. Since the beginning of the NEW SBC it's been the more the merrier, except for bigger schools than the current largest.

Seeing Uppers game scores this season, and other recent years, they want nothing to do with any type of revamped NOL. They are just as well off to work to just be successful where they are. Never would I have thought I would see the day that I would admit the old NCC is where we would be getting our ***** kicked weekly. Amazing what happens over the course of 15 years.

The Buckeye Conference was a beast. But how did Lorain, Lorain Admiral King, and Elyria travel all the way to Marion (and vice versa) especially in the winter during basketball season? My brother in law coached at Findlay and when scouting he was always afraid of having his tires slashed when going up to the Lorain schools. You can't drive Mercedes, Bentley's, and Porsches and not suffer the consequences I played for Marion Harding ,let me tell you it wasn't a fun 3hour bus ride home after getting the **** kicked out of you in Lorain, or Elyria. The Buckeye was a great conference, I played in the last years of its existence, graduated in 87. I'm with most here, would love to see the old conferences again, the NOL, the NCC the Buckeye and the mid ohio I think it was , Marion Catholic, Ontario, crestline,Higland , Fredrictown, Northmor, MT.Gilead. I could be wrong about the mid ohio name . I remember Marion Catholic played on Saturday nights at Harding stadium , we would go watch and hit on all the Catholic girls. Good times. The days of those conferences are gone, size of The schools have changed a lot in some cases . It was fun.

It is amazing, it's like that everywhere. What has happened to Upper has happened to a lot of what I call city schools Look at Mansfield, Marion Harding where I went, they get tromped by Pleasant, North Union etc.... . Different times, sad.

Is there anything that you think happened to Upper the last 15 years that other schools haven't experienced? I mean, Upper seems to be at least on par with the other N10 schools in all the other sports. What has happened to football?

What happened to Harding was open enrollment , the economic condition of Marion and the lack of interest. None of the people I went to school with send their kids to Harding because it was not a great environment for learning or athletics. Lot of less than upstanding young citizens attending Harding . I hate to say it but it's a general lack of good kids . Urban flight in a sense. A few years ago Brady, the former head coach of Harding had to call kids and go see them to try and get them to play. He had 30 bodies at the time. When I played , we had 100-110, had to scrape to suit everyone up with equipment. Uppers case is different, It goes in cycles , it also becomes a culture . Upper sucks in football every year some kids won't play because of that , the ones that do are accustomed to losing and it just becomes habit. It's also coaching. A lot is coaching.A Fine current example is Northmor. A close friends grandkid played for Northmor until 2016, good player, he plays at Muskingum now and helps coach when he can. Northmor got a new coach last year , I have seen them play for the last 4 years , they have no more talent this year not last year than they did in 2015 & 16, maybe less. They were 0-10 and 1-9. Complete turn around. Coincidence that MT.Gilead was winless this year and has some of Northmors former coaches. Maybe , but probably not.

Open enrollment definately penalizes larger, urban schools, but I think the main factor is poor participation levels, not just in sports, but all extracuriculars. It didn't use to be the problem it is today, because kids grew up from an early age, playing baseball, basketball, football on the local sandlot and the desire to play was ingrained in them from an early age. There is a different ethic these days. The local playgrounds, outdoor basketball courts, baseball fields sit empty. It's much easier to sit in the comfort of the home and play electronic games and guzzle sodas. For those that complain about the excellence from Catholic, and private schools, it is the traditionally higher percentage of student participation in extracuriculars. The smaller rural schools enjoy a higher participation rate as well. I don't think it is a kick on the urban schools, just the sign of the times.

You are right, all me and my friends did was play ball all day and night back on the 80's. I have also noticed , at least in Marion , the overall decline in city sports programs. Baseball for Youth in Marion was one of the best programs in the state when I grew up. It is no secret why Marion Harding fielded some good baseball teams in the 60's 70's and 80's. That program was the root of all the success. Year in year out 30 minor league teams , 24 little league teams , 16 pony league teams and 12 colt league teams. A lot of good old coaches up there , with a lot of knowledge. They are of course gone now .It is a shell of what it was , its actually pretty bad these days.As a result Harding baseball is just awful these days. I live about 5 minutes from Harding , I watch games all the time, its not good baseball.
