Halfway point in the season. Only 3 teams with overall winning records. Looks like Clear Fork is the team to beat in the second half.
Surprises so far: -Clear Fork finishing the first round of conference games undefeated. I thought there would be a little drop off after losing Barnett but it appears like they may actually be more consistent and balanced offensively without him. -Shelby being in 5th place. I thought they had enough coming back with the addition of Pugh to win the conference but they seem to be regressing since their strong start to the season.
POY? -Alsip? (Galion) -Herbert? (Buckeye Valley) -Somebody from Pleasant or Clear Fork has to be the favorite though, right? Alsip and Herbert are playing well but both play for teams with losing records.
COY? -Bechtel -Snively -Worstell's doing a nice job but it has to go to either Bechtel or Snively so far.
Galion (4-7) -The rest of their OOC games should be easy wins (4 games) -If they can get a couple more conference wins that could get them to 10+ wins. Will that be enough for Valentine to keep his job? This is Galion's most talented team they've had in a couple years and could be the best they have in several more years and they'll likely finish with a losing record. Definitely underachieving IMO due to poor coaching.
Anybody want to provide their opinions and analysis on their team?

Is Galion underachieving? Probably. But who have they lost to that they should have been favored to beat? I'm not sure that they are more talented than the group from 4 years ago though, maybe if Z hadn't moved. If they get to 10+ wins he'll keep his job. Looking at this conference outside of RV who did you realistically expect them to finish ahead of?

POY is definitely not Alsip... just bc you score a lot doesn’t make him the POY. He plays little to no defense, takes ton of I’ll advised shots, and doesn’t seem to be the greatest teammate either. Pleasant has a strong group of 3-4 as does CF. Both teams are so balanced that it may be hard for people to select one ‘standout’ player for the award. RV has the Kinney boy in the middle who is just a monster to deal with. Herbert playing with the young group may be hurting his numbers, but is a candidate halfway through. Shelby has some quality players but not sure one could be considered for POY. Ontario and MH have no one in consideration imo.

Alsip really knows how to play the passing lanes. Last I looked he was leading the league in steals. The 6-6 Shelby Soph has the best skill set in the league, but has been asked to do a lot for a new kid in a system, due to Shelby's injuries. From one game to the next, the Colts have a different POY, which will hurt. Too bad Shelby's 6-7 3-point shooting Senior injured his knee.

Playing the passing lanes is great, when I've seen him play he does not pressure the ball hard, poor rotations, etc. It seems he knows if he gets in foul trouble he must sit, and he cant score from the bench and it appears that might be the only thing he cares about.

Stats like steals and assists can be a judgement action which benefit some depending on who is keeping the stat. Anyone who has seen Alsip play would not rank him with the best defenders in the MOAC, the kid is a scorer.

Shelby dropped 2 this weekend and the worst thing about it was the Hoffman boy went down again, they miss him big time!!! Until the move in learns to play other than ME BAll rather than team ball, its going to a long rest of the year!! The kid has talent, but has to learn to play as a team!!!

IMO, the Soph has more overall talent than Hoffman, but there is no denying that having an athletic 6-6 and 6-7 is much better than having just a 6-6.

"Should" have won implies to me that we were favored going in. Since you go to so many games perhaps you should look up on the wall at the banners. There is a reason that we haven't won a conference title in men's bball in any conference that we've been in since the '70's and it.s not simply the current coach. Do you realize that we have won 2 conference titles in girls bball since then? Look, I get it. We all want to see our kids succeed. But oftentimes we credit them with a bit more ability than they actually have. As a parent I'm just as guilty as anyone. Many times I've sat in the stands frustrated that they made a poor choice or a poor play. A few days later when I calm down I can look back and admit to myself if she did all of those thing s right she'd have been an all conference performer and I feel like an idiot for being so hard on her. This season we have 2 pretty good players, but both have some flaws in their game. Even in a down year we don't compare with Ontario or Shelby. Especially in a down year because they can't afford to overlook us since they really need the win.

It’s going to be three full seasons where we lost a bunch of games that we SHOULD have won and won none of the games we COULD have won. We have just a much talent and depth as any team in the conference (except for Clear Fork). None of the teams have a lot of depth this year and most of the teams have just two good players, like us, and then just some average role players. Maybe you should go to the Girls Basketball thread and read what you said about Galion’s last girls coach after he resigned. That’s pretty much the same problems with the current boys coach.

Not many outside of galion fans would have favored galion in the Harding or Madison game. Your comment about even talent is very laughable.

Maybe we're not quite even with everyone but it's much closer than you think. We lost to Ontario and Shelby by 9. How is that not even talent or close? We definitely are better than Harding and Madison though.

Shelby has better talent than most in the MOAC and a good coach but are 3-4. My guess is Galion could win a lot of open gym games and maybe look good in scrimmages and AAU tournaments.

And there is no way he is the best player on Shelby's team, maybe he could be, but not the way he plays now!!!!!

As someone who is not connected to Shelby basketball I can look at players, coaches and the game without a hidden agenda. Shelby has a nice group of pieces for a basketball team. The move in has the most basketball talent. At 6'5 he can handle the ball, score, rebound, pass and yes, defend(leads the team in steals). The other pieces are good in their own ways as well. I did not say the kid was an all American, but no Shelby player is.

Well as far as I am concerned your athlete of the week means nothing!!! All the news journal looks at is points!! He might lead the team in points and steals!! Do you look at how many turn overs he has a game, I am sure you don't!!! How he fails to play defense, you don't again!!! There are 2 or 3 players I would pick for my team from Shelby before I would take him!!! Yes he has talent and could be a good player, but not the way he plays now!!!! I hope he learns how to play the game, he doesn't now!!!

Should've beat Harding and Madison at least. We should at least finish ahead of RV, BV, and MH. And we should be able to beat Ontario. They're down this year. Maybe even Shelby. How many games have you watched this season? They've beaten both BV and RV. They lost by 5 against Harding. So they are essentially where you expected them to be. I.M.H.O.: I'm just not a big fan of two guys that can score (in streaks) and three other guys that aren't rebounding very well. There just isn't enough cohesiveness for my taste. We don't handle the press very well, but it "is" better now than it was towards the beginning of the season. Missed three point shots have, invariably, long rebounds; and we just are not in position for the long caroms. One would think that, by now (halfway through the season), we'd have figured out, or at least "seen", enough of a teammates shots to have figured out how to rebound his missed shots. Additionally, if an opponent plays reasonable hard/tough half-court defense against the Tigers, they hit a brink wall and won't score, unless Alsip gets hot and starts hitting 3's (reference missed 3's in above paragraph). It's almost like 3 or bust right now and you cannot consistently win unless Alsip scores 20 with Lackey pitching in at least 15-18 and the others rebounding well. That's a lot of "if's" and not a lot of "W's".

Shelby lost Stine before season started another kid that would have contributed. Kid can jump he also probably would have been at the state meet for high jump this year. and with Hoffman out they don't have enough depth left.

Hoffman is a more mature player and I’d take him over Pugh right now. Pugh may end up better, but his outside shot isn’t as good and he plays a little out of control. Let’s keep in mind he’s two years younger. I’ve played on the same court with them.
I’m a bit surprised at their record. I expected more. I know they have been missing three contributors at any given time often two at a time (Amstutz, Hoffman, Gossler).

Auto correct can only fix if it knows what you are doing and you didn't even know that. I'm not the one to teach spelling class that is for sure. But I never made the claim to have played ball with any of these guys either.

I know him as Grant. Most on here may not. My comment acknowledges that autocorrect doesn’t fix names, but if it did my first attempt might have been corrected and my second would have for sure. I was just a little surprised that of all the mistakes people post on this site that one got pointed out. Not offended, I just thought it was funny.
