I know buckeye central may not have the most talent in the world but I think they have some kids that can win some games! And talk about a community that backs their sports! I hope they can truth it around

Buckeye has the same problem many schools have these days....low numbers. As a long time football official, I have seen these numbers evaporate over the past few years. Unfortunately if this trend continues, we are going to lose football all over the state. Hopefully that will not happen to BC

Also mind boggling is the number of coaching openings across the state. Seems to be a very difficult job to keep people happy these days. It's to the point now I think, that the only way to have numbers is to already have a winning culture. Kids (and even some assistant coaches) don't even want to attempt what it takes to bring some of these losing programs back from the dead...Coach Detterman will be a very good addition to someone's staff in the future if he chooses to go that route.

I was an assistant coach in Michigan a few years back and I can cite several reasons why numbers are dropping still. It requires sweat, tears and real work. It requires a time investment and most kids today aren't willing to wait to become a starter or to play JV. To top it off, mommy and daddy are right behind little Johnny telling him he could single handedly win the game because he’s such a talent. I can tell you stories, but without point of reference, it becomes moot.
At one point, my daughter who was in first or second grade at the time, got to hear from one of her friends that her dad was a lousy coach because her little friends dad said so... could be... Parents are such assholes.
It’s just less work and emotional investment to play Madden and no one yells at you if you screw up... just my point of view...
However, I do miss that sweet tan I got every August.. 😉

Are you making reference to coming back to beat Marion Local the next year and the work/time investment it took to do that?? If so, agreed, however football is a different animal in a program that is close to making it to the championship than a program trying to establish itself, trying to learn to be successful. The perspective itself for kids involved can be 180 degrees.

The perspective itself for kids involved can be 180 degrees. Over the years, I have seen many games which were decided well before the opening toss. Programs like Marion Pleasant, Newark Catholic, Danville And others are consistently good, though some have an occasional rebuilding year. Those kids expect to win. But they are also committed to winning, with year round training, hard work, attention to detail, and a strong level of pride. Losing is not part of there vocabulary. on the other hand, there are programs I have seen that lost the game before the opening toss. These teams, some with a good work ethic and talent, just don’t have the “swagger “ that some teams have..They dream of winning, but in there heads the know that they are going to lose. Breaking this mentality is hard, but with the right group of coaches and players, it can be done.
