I’ve been to St. Nicholas in Frenchtown many times. For my money, Our Lady of Consolation in Carey is the most beautiful church in the Dioceses. The Basilica is such a powerful and humbling place. If you get a chance Sacred Heart of Jesus at “The Settlement” south of Shelby is one of the most beautiful churches I’ve been in. Technically in Bethlehem if you Google it. Striking stone church in the middle of corn fields. Meticulously maintained. Oh, I'm intimately familiar with "The Settlement". It holds a special place for me. I may have graduated 8th grade at Sacred Heart school back in the day. I guess the parents wanted to keep me out of shenanigans at the Junior High in Shelby. I think the threat of 4 years at St. Pete's was also a hard Catholic tactic. Our graduating class had a whopping 5 students! Coincidentally, Monsignor Mike Hohenbrink, who I referenced earlier in this thread, is from Bethlehem and attended the same school. PS, if I'm not mistaken, his parents names were Mary and Joseph. You can't make this stuff up!

The Basilica is all that. I've attended Masses there and sing in choirs there, every year. The National Shrine Park is an amazing place as well. Most recently, they have upgraded and enhanced all the stations of the cross, with L.E.D. lighting. I also sing in the choir, for the annual candle light vigil in August. with a gathering of 10,000 faithful worshippers. Agreed. The Franciscans have done a wonderful job working to maintain the property. I've also spent a lot of time here, having worked TEC retreats for years. Sadly, this was the last year for that program in Carey. They can no longer maintain the Pilgrim House because of the age and relative cost for constant upkeep. Having seen kids from all over the Diocese have such impactful weekends there, I'm sure it will always be an important place for them. I know many, even now in adulthood, who will simply stop off the Carey exit whilst traveling up/down 23 to light a candle in the Basilica. My favorite odd fact about Carey, unrelated, is the 10:00PM curfew siren. That always caught me off guard.

Kids not paying attention to the time, start running for home when they hear their warning....lol 'Our Lady of the Pines' in Fremont, has great retreat programs for adults. Not sure if they offered anything for youth.

I attended a wedding 6/21 at St Joes in Tiffin. Another beautiful church. A beautiful church indeed and much like Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, replete with amazing sound acoustics. St. Joe's is undertaking a major upgrade and restoration of their vintage pipe organ. They have raised over $600,000 for just that purpose.

For such a tiny school, New Riegel has been known to torture and take down teams way and bigger and faster than them like Basketball Tiffin Columbian, Oak Harbor, Port Clinton, Fostoria etc...The girls softball team crushed Bellevue 6-3 this past season. Don't know whats in the water or what they grow around New Riegel but the kids definitely have no fear of any team they play.

I'm excited what's going on at HL in BB. All Ohio Center and most of the talented roster returns and then they get an honorable mention All-Ohio transfer Sophomore coming in from Tiffin Columbian.

A lot of Bellevue students that live out in the country on the farm do the same thing New Riegel does, but NR probably does it better. Yes New Riegel and Hopewell Loudon students probably know each other very well because a lot of family member who attend both schools are related by generations. Its shades of the late 90s at Hopewell Loudon only this time, its the girls basketball team instead of volleyball when they had 6'2 Lauren Kelbley. Did you see the girl at Buckeye Central 6'3 Alexi Evak

The basilica at OLC is breathtaking but the park doesn’t hold up to the sorrowful mother shrine south of Bellevue. A unique and peaceful place unlike any other I’ve ever seen.
We have immaculate conception school here in PC and I hear that it’s doing quite well. I attended St.Boniface in Oak Harbor and loved going there.
It still floors me that the Fremont catholic school system associated itself with bishop hoffman. Fremont native or not he knowingly returned a convicted child molester to active ministry. How you could name a school system after someone like that is beyond me.

I have a good buddy that lives in Bellevue and we have talked about it, but never made the time to visit the shrine at Bellevue. Glad you mentioned it, will make a point this summer to check it out. I have several friends that attend the IC church in PC and I think they are in the choir as well. In all fairness, there's got to be more to the story with Bishop Hoffman's actions. My wife and I have attended 4 parishes regularly over the years and none of them have one whisper of any inappropriate behavior by clergy, deacons or staff. When I hear allegations elsewhere, it is shocking to say the least.

He shuffled the pedophile priest in Monroeville as well. My personal expierence with the Catholic Church was wonderful and it shocked me when the scandal broke out. The church’s handling of this was very poor and they still haven’t figured out what they need to do to move forward. To me that’s purging out the upper leadership of the American church. The church needs to turn a corner and it’s not going to happen with guys like the Rhode Island bishop who made the comments about pride parades being bad for children. You can think whatever about pride and gay rights because that’s your right. However you can’t have a bishop who’s response to getting questioned by police about a molestation he knew about was “ it’s not my job”. He has no credibility to be going around telling people what’s best for children. can’t keep happening if the church expects to recover and grow again. Leadership needs to be filled with upstanding and relevant bishops and cardinals. The situation now is just a perpetual drag on the church.

I have fond memories from childhood having visited the Sorrowful Mother Shrine and the many grottos tucked in the woods. As soon as we veered left at the fork on Rt. 4, I knew we were close. Or at least seeing signs for the 'Blue Hole'. I do have an odd memory of always calling this place "Marywood" when I was a kid. I'm not sure if this signifies anything or not.

Marywood refers to the area about a mile northwest of the Shrine where the current St Gaspar del Bufalo parrish is (former St Michael's)
That area is also known as Frank.
