Interesting read in today's Telegraph Forum. Apparently students aren't the only ones "open enrolling" out of Bucyrus High School in droves as discussed in another thread.. The Head Basketball and Wrestling coaches have resigned to take positions at Galion High School. They joined Head Football Coach Eckert, who went to Ontario, in saying that they didn't like the "direction" that Bucyrus was heading. The three coaches join a number of administrators that have left in the past year also. Bad news for all the students, athletes or not, in the school. What's going on?

Forgive me as this was nearly 20 years ago, but some birdie(or birdies) stated things were going to be so much better leaving the NOL. #culturalissues

I have not lived in the community for several decades now, so my information is limited and I have no vested interest.. However, in speaking with some family and friends that still live in Bucyrus, and looking from a distance, there appears to be some real issues with the school system. Quite frankly, the school system should have been consolidated with Wynford decades ago, but that will never happen and is a topic for another day. From what I hear, these issues have been festering and getting worse for a long period of time. That is evidenced by the massive number of families that chose to educate their kids elsewhere. It may be wishful thinking, but I hope this is a massive house cleaning, and the start of the rebuilding process. I hope so, because my hometown is a nice community, and it will only be as good as it's flagship school system.

People there have never liked or respected Bucyrus. I remember how they wanted to "punish" Bucyrus but putting a hundred points on the Board in football in Bucyrus's last year in the NOL, since they were leaving the high and mighty NOL. Get over it!

I don't know about the administrators that have recently left, but those coaches were all fairly new. I doubt they were part of any festering long term problem, they were more likely part of a rebuilding process. Seems like the wrong people may be leaving the house.

From what I was hearing, community perception of the school was one of the issues. I don’t know if the past administration was responsible for that, but maybe some new blood might be able to change that.
As for the coaches themselves, specially football, it seems that the Redmen were very mistake prone, and had trouble competing with most of the other schools in the league. Case in point, against Wynford, they totally self destructed again to a mediocre Wynford team, and got their butts kicked, again, by the Royals. Is that a coaching problem, who knows. But the fact that they had less than 40 players in the top 4 grades, and only something like 6 seventh graders, tells me that the program was not where it should be. Virtually every other school in the league, with the exception of BC, had way more players suiting up.
Only time will tell if the new coach is an improvement. There was a time when the Redmen were competive, and ocasionaly good. It would be nice to get back to that place.

Bucyrus also has a new AD with relatively little coaching experience and no AD experience. She's got her work cut out for her. Good luck to the Redmen.

New superintendent, new principal, new AD, and several other new administrators, to go with new football, new wrestling and now new basketball coach. Plus, a number of other teachers have retired or moved on. They all have their work cut out for them. I hope the community will support them and give them a chance.

The three coaches join a number of administrators that have left in the past year also. Bad news for all the students, athletes or not, in the school. What's going on? From what I've heard, the previous administration had a plan in place when previous Superintendent Kevin Kimmel resigned and took the MOESC superintendent position that a certain administrator would take the place of Kimmel and every one else would fill in moving up the administration ladder. However, the school board found out about this and was not on board with this plan, to the point of considering disciplinary action against some administrators. So, in order to avoid prosecution from the school board a number of administrators jumped ship finding new positions at Crestline and Mohawk. From what I've heard, current teachers have a problem with the direction the new administration is trying to take the school. As Mattix said in the article about the decision of not hiring a middle school art teacher. For the most part Bucyrus isn't or hasn't been a school that has been focused on sports or willing to sacrifice achievement in the arts or academics for sports for the past 25 years or so. It seems that the new administration is trying to change that. Specifically in a way that current coaches won't believe will work. Unfortunately all of the politics of it gets taken out on the kids. Not a great look for the new administration. 10+ teachers and administrators leaving in the same year won't be good for the school either. Surprised consolidation with either Wynford or Colonel Crawford hasn't been brought up. Unfortunately, some parents at county schools have a problem with their kids associating with kids from city schools like Galion or Bucyrus. Too much politics and old grudges that shouldn't mean much when you graduate from high school. But consolidation and all that is a different discussion entirely and probably won't happen unless the state comes in and forces a merger.

Thanks Redmen 12 for the update. I figured there was something else going on to cause the mass exodus. From my view from far away Licking County, it appears that things are a mess. It would be interesting to know what the new administration's plan is and what it is trying to accomplish.
Regarding football, all I know is this. Back in the day when I attended BHS, we beat both our rivals (Wynford and Galion) two out of my three years in football. Now, none of these kids have experienced the thrill of beating their rivals. I feel bad for the kids. Experiencing a victory over your rival is a lifetime memory. Losing to your rival even once is sickening, at least for me. I can't even imagine how these kids feel.

Did they also resign thei teaching positions or just the coaching ? Let's see. job duties for NEW athletic director in first month of job 1) Assist new football coach with staff 2) Find new basketball coach 3) Find new wrestling coach 4) Oh, by the way, now need a football opponent for week three, since SMCC has just canceled their 11 man season. When it rains, it pours

Probably too late for this year, but I think Bucyrus should try to get Crestline on their non league schedule. It is to the point now that this may be a pretty good matchup for these two neighbors.

When it rains, it pours If you interviewed for this position you knew it was a bad job when you applied. The fact that they hired someone with no AD experience tells a story that they had limited applicants or were not committed to paying experience. The pleasant thing for the newbie is that the previous guy did not set the bar very high.

I just looked to see who they picked up for this year to replace SMCC. They are traveling to Grandview Heights.
