Swim season is here! Who will win the SBC title?
Sandusky St. Mary, who finished first last year with 154 points, is probably the most hard hit team by graduation, losing four of their 12 swimmers. Most notably, they lose performer of the meet Kaatz, who led the team to three 1st places and one 2nd place. Top swimmers Braun, Dudenhoefer and Gyurke will return, however, and still be able to form a solid relay.
Port Clinton, who finished second last year with 124 points, loses two of their 11 swimmers to graduation (swimmer Auxter and diver Dackermann), both of whom contributed quite a few points to their team. Though the loss of Auxter could slow their relay down a bit, they still return top swimmers Barr and Kessler as well as two divers.
Perkins, who finished third last year with 115 points, loses only two of their 15 swimmers to graduation, one of them being lead distance sprinter Bruner. This will hurt their team a bit as he scored a lot of points for them. Fortunately for their team, top distance swimmer Schaeffer, along with lead swimmers Jolliff and Branum, will return, though it will be hard to put together a solid relay.
Oak Harbor, who finished fourth last year with 106 points, loses only one of their 15 swimmers to graduation (Sievert), who scored some points for the team in mid-distance events. This loss should not effect the team too much, however, as they still return Price, Hess and more experienced swimmers.
Huron, who finished fifth last year with 97 points, loses only two of their 18 swimmers to graduation, one of them (Swope) being one of their top sprinters. Though they still return top swimmers Griffin, Hart and Tanaka, they may have trouble finding a solid fourth relay member.
Margaretta, who placed sixth last year with 66 points, loses only one of their 14 swimmers to graduation (Swartz), though he is their top sprinter. This will hurt their team, yet they still return a good amount of experienced swimmers.
Tiffin Calvert, who placed seventh last year with 7 points, only had one swimmer who swims sprint free and breast, and should return year.
Fremont St. Joseph, who did not score last year, graduates all six of their swimmers. They still have five female swimmers so they should still offer a team, but it would most likely not be very strong to start with.
Fostoria St. Wendelin, who did not score last year, only has one boy swimmer who swims mainly sprint freestyle and should not score any points for the team. I heard they are getting four more new boys, though, so they should be able to put together a relay.
While the top few teams could be very close, I pick St. Mary's to win it again, followed by Port Clinton, Oak Harbor, Perkins, Huron, Margaretta, St. Wendelin, Calvert and St. Joseph's. Second through fourth places especially are a toss up in my opinion. Good luck to all as the season begins in less than two weeks!
