I appreciate everything he has done, but the fire is gone with his program. Time to hire in a new guy.

JaQuan Lyle has been released from the team. Another hit for a program that can't afford more any more departures.

The Lyle story is an odd one. He gets arrested in his hometown over the weekend for some misdemeanors and then it's made public that he quit the team on April 11. Surprising that it was kept quiet for over a month.

In all honesty I see this as a good thing for the Buckeyes. I never felt Lyle was a good fit. Always had the feeling he wanted to be the replacement for Russell and he just wasn't good enough to carry a program and that is what was needed the last couple seasons.

^^ Very well could be, I don't disagree. Only problem right now is that leaves only 9 scholarship players.

Which gets me back to my original thoughts that Matta has to be taking long, serious looks at Jr. College fill-ins. Absolutely no way to build a program, but a temp fix for his precarious situation at the moment.

Not that this is a significant loss but walk on Jimmy Jent also left the program yesterday.

What happened to Funderburk? Thought he was in this incoming class, but never hear him mentioned anymore.

He redshirted this past season so he will still have 4 years of eligibility left.

Funderburke will be 6th man like next year probably. Him and Micah. Might add a late scholarship player we'll see. Next years class looks better. Hope it can stay that way. Wesson is still a big get in this years class. Was very underrated because of his weight. But he lost 50 pounds over last summer. And it showed. More mobility now. Can't wait to see him play.

Obviously just rumors and speculation but I've read a lot of people saying OSU will reach out to Billy Donovan.

Billy Donovan would be good.
Well, they'll let Thad go through the motions, one more year. I have little doubt Thad had two options, retire or be fired. Not too keen on letting him hang around another season, as he will be half-heartedly recruiting for his successor.

It's not a matter of Thad "half-heartedly" recruiting. It's a matter of what player of any worth would accept an offer to play for a school not knowing who the coach will be when he gets there.

Very true....... Thanks to Thad Matta for all he has done for The Ohio State University. The Buckeyes all-time winningest coach. Thad is a class guy and I wish him the best in his retirement.

Dingus, players were not coming here anyhow even with TM at the helm. He lost it, lost the program he once had and built. Its a wash season with our without TM at this point.

It is rather strange how things initially transpired with the announcement that Matta will retire after this coming season is completed. Then another Thad Matta/Gene Smith meeting altered the Matta departure schedule. He's outa here immediately! Obviously, things didn't go well for Matta at their last get together, to make Gene Smith bump up his departure date. I'm assuming it's still an amiable agreement for his graceful retirement....or is it?

Ignoramus, if Wesson was being recruited this year would he commit to Ohio State not knowing who would be the head coach next year? Dumb ars, a head coach getting fired is ALWAYS problematic for recruits. Doofus, players and their parents aren't as stupid as you are. Them seeing the hand writing on the wall would steer them away from Ohio State. THE SINGLE biggest reason for Matta stepping aside was the loss of players and commitments.

What was originally portrayed as a smooth departure at the end of this coming season, is now being characterized as a Gene Smith firing. A firing that was purportedly administered at the most awkward of moments, with Matta and his staff entertaining a potential Louisville transfer. Talk about maximum shock value....wow.

With all the mention of health from Matta during the press conference, it could be that he finally faced the fact he could not go another day in his current condition.

Not too shabby, lol

My good friend Dick Vitale has suggested Tom Crean would be a good consideration. I didn't want to mention Crean, because so many haters wearing scarlet & gray. Personally, I like his offense and his teams maintained a controlled discipline with few turnovers. Most of his teams produced high FGP's. Bottom line, always enjoyed watching Indiana basketball over the years.
My infatuation with Hoosier BB started with coach Knight. They played the game of basketball as it was meant to be played, then and now: unselfishly, smart and patient on offense; tenacious, relentless and together on defense. Knight's motion offense was a pleasure to watch with constant screens by the immovable object that was Kent Benson at the high post. My all-time favorite BB team has to be the National Champion 75-76 Hoosiers, with May, Benson, Buckner, Wilkerson, Abernathy, Crews, Radford. The last team to pull off an undefeated masterpiece of a season. As good as that team was, Bobby Knight always said his 74-75 team was his all-time best. People forget the previous years team ripped off 31 straight, was ranked #1 all season long and were upset 92-90 in the regional finals, with Scott May sitting on the sidelines with his broken arm in a sling.

Osu loses 2018 commitment Justin ahrens, I thought he'd be pretty good tbh. Hope to keep the UA commitment he looks better. Looks to be a rebuild. New coach will have to get started on 2018 class.

If Crean Failed at Indian, a basketball school. He'll be less successful at Ohio State, a football school.

Firing Matta in June instead of March cost the basketball program a year in it's recovery, if it ever will. IMO, the new coach MUST come up with a first class comparable to The Thad Five. If not, he won't be around long.
