Sounds like Gene Smith may be wading through a dilemma. Again, I wonder if he is charting his course alone, or is there a search committee? I know the answer is undoubtedly, the one man committee. Tom Crean may be the best available option at this point....if he wants to get back into coaching.

IF that is the best option, lets cancel the 2017-18 season and work on 2018

Butler coach Holtmann is the new name that's being thrown around now so we'll see.

Right after I sent that last post I saw Eleven Warriors say that it's a done deal. Holtmann will be the next coach.

I think that would be a really good hire.

I like the hire. Was successful even after Stevens left them. And was good at a smaller school before that.

Agree that this is a great hire for Ohio State. He knows Ohio, having raided Buckeye high schools for talent during his tenure at Butler. He's fiery, dynamic and remember Butler has had great success under him. Probably not be a banner year for the Bucks next season, but think things are looking up!

Yup I love the hire. Every quote you read from other coaches, basketball analysts, etc. is nothing but positive about him and how good of a hire this was. It may take a few years for him to get the team looking the way he wants but I'm excited to see what that will look like. Some are wondering if Kyle Young may try to get out of his letter of intent with Butler and come to Ohio State instead?

Beilein won 46 in his first 3 years in the Big Ten Izzo 55 Painter 56 Ryan 68 Matta 81
How many will Holtmann win in his First 3 years?

It's pretty safe to say, it won't be 81. Of course, Matta had more talent to start off with than Holtmann will be faced with.

I think this year will be used to clean up the mess. If they make the NIT that will be a bonus. Year 2 they should be expected to make the tourney. Year 3 and beyond they should be seen as a top 4 Big Ten program. The thing about basketball compared to football, it only takes one or two big time recruits to turn things around.

What us fans and Gene Smith need to do is show coach Holtmann lots of encouragement and support, while keeping any pressures or unreasonable expectations out of the equation. As you say, this thing will evolve, but it's going take a period of time, perhaps several seasons for things to happen.

The 2003-2004 season might have been Matta's best coaching job to win 20. This is a pretty bad roster, Charles Bass, Nick Dials, Terence Dials, Brandon Fuss-Cheatham, Ivan Harris, Shun Jenkins, Matt Marinchick, Ugo Nwankwo, Velimir Radinovic, Tony Stockman, JJ Sullinger, Matt Sylvester. Think back, most of those players were bad or one dimensional. There were only 2 above average players on that roster.

Wow, had to reflect on all of those names, apart from Sullinger, most are very forgettable. At the time, had supreme confidence Nick Dials would emerge as a team leader and future star. We know how that ended. Ugo Nwankwo? Now that kid, I do not remembeer. I have to agree, to pull this unlikely group together and manage 20 wins took Matta and his staff to task of coaching their ***** off.

Matta's first year at OSU was 2004-05 and the non Big Ten schedule contributed greatly to the 20 win season. Towson, Mercer, Chattanooga, Robert Morris, Houston, Delaware, Portland St, Texas Tech, Morehead St, New Hampshire and St Joseph's were all wins.

Its going to all come down to recruiting. He recruits well, and OSU will be back on the map. He doesn't and he wont be at OSU long.

He was able to recruit quite well at Butler, where he had to go toe to toe with Indiana and Notre Dame. The accepted thinking is, he will do extremely well at Ohio State.

I think he will do well. I mean I hope he does. It would be nice to have OSU basketball back on the map.
