Kyle Young, is moving his commitment from Butler to the Buckeyes. Not really a surprise, most have been anticipating him following Holtmann to Columbus.

It's now official, Funderburke is officially gone, 'for not living up to team expectations.' I wonder if he would have been released, if Matta was still steering the ship. Holtmann is a breath of fresh air for this stagnating program.

Also, Braxton Beverly was released from his scholarship. That leaves 8 scholarship players on the roster of which only 2 are guards.

I guess it's going to be a no-brainer what Holtmann will be doing in the coming weeks and months. JUCO players and eligible 5th year graduate transfers. Short term solution till he can bring the talent he wants and needs.

Ohio State signs Musa Jallow a 4* and #31 composite ranked player in the country. The 6-5 guard/forward average 24.1 and 9.5 for Bloomington North as a Junior and reclassified to sign a year early with Ohio State. He favored Indiana until Crean was fired. With Wesson and Young, Ohio State now has the Big Ten's 2017 #1 recruiting class.

So far Holtman has done everything right. May surprise a bit on the court this winter. I'm not saying they make the dance, but he is going to make each game for opposing coaches/players hard

I'm quite surprised about MF's revelation that the Buckeyes have the #1 recruiting class for 2017. Anyone know how many schollies are still available to be filled for the 2017 recruiting year? I'm hoping for more surprises this off season.

The Buckeyes, nor Cincinnati are ranked in the top 40.

Gotta walk before you can run. At this point I don't give a poop about X, Cincy or the the rest of the country. Having the #1 recruiting class in the Big Ten for 2017 is a giant leap for Ohio State.

Again, does anyone know how many scholarships Holtmann has left for the 017 class, if any?

I'm hoping for more surprises this off season. With the signing of Jallow and giving 2 year walk on Joey Lane a scholarship, that leaves 3 available. I wouldn't waste any scholarships on JUCO players or 2* or 3* players just for more depth. They can add a couple of walk ons for that. The only Senior this year is Tate, so they'll have 4 scholarships to use for 2018, unless Diop leaves early or someone transfers or is shown the door.

Holtmann is a skilled recruiter. I agree, no need to hastily fill out the roster with sub-par talent. If none available that meet expectations, save those schollies for next year.

Coach Holtmann picked up his 2nd recruiting commit today. 4* 6-4 SG Torrance Watson out of Missouri. According to Bucknuts, although he is technically a 2018 recruit, he is expected to make himself available for 2017 season.

According to 11warriors, Watson is the first commitment in the 2018 class. He's one of the top 100 players in his class. As a Junior he averaged 27.1 for The Whitfield School, a small co-ed private school for grades 6-12 in the St.Louis area that averages around 35 students per class.
It sounds like Holtmann favors a 3 guard offense with a lot of 6-5 players, similar to Matta's original offenses. Until it became obvious that Matta's teams couldn't beat Big Ten teams and NCAA Tournament teams that had a lot of 6-6 to 6-8 wings and small forwards.

He is in the 2018 recruiting class, but according to Bucknuts and 11 Warriors (quote below) he is reclassifying for the 2017 class, if I'm reading it correctly. Can anyone further explain the 'reclassifying' process and what it entalis? This is something new to me. "Watson's commitment comes on the heels of Ohio State getting a pledge from four-star guard/wing Musa Jallow, who also announced his intentions to reclassify to 2017 and join the team this coming fall."

Reclassify means 2 things. 1 is that you go to a prep school that is actually more like a 5 year high school. The second is you are a junior and have enough credits to graduate.

I read that to mean he(Jallow) was a factor for Watson being a 2018 Buckeye commit, but that 2018 commit Jallow, also announced his intentions to reclassify. Although the report was on Watson they gave additional info on Jallow using the " who also".

Thanks for the interpretation and explanation. I understood about the credits, (I had sufficient credits accrued to graduate after my Jr. year as well) My brother-in-law skipped his Sr. year at New Riegel and began his studies at Heidelberg. Was Jallow enrolled at a prep school?

Completing high school in 3 years. Having the credits is one thing but having the foresight to take the needed advanced classes while also taking the current needed classes.(jr taking sr courses)

Reclassify means 2 things. 1 is that you go to a prep school that is actually more like a 5 year high school. The second is you are a junior and have enough credits to graduate. You do not have to go to a "prep school". For example, you can take courses in summer school that gives you enough credits to fulfill requirements to graduate at the end of your Junior year. Similar to football players having enough credits to leave early to take part in spring ball. Some schools allow you to take extra courses instead of having a study hall. In the case of basketball you must announce which graduation "class" you intend to be a part of, the "reclassifying".
