Galion down 18-9 to a not great Northmor team (loose past the record.) after one. Didn’t Northmor win the KMAC and get close to a top seed? They’re pretty solid despite being D4.

Pretty sure AUS won’t crack 20 points in this one.

I am surprised by the Ontario loss. Upper was 3-20 last year and 0-2 to start the season. From an elite program under Balogh to this. The Pleasant R Valley score was closer than I expected. I had figured this would be Ontario's first win. I've heard some people who have seen them, claim they may win 6 games this year and counted on the US game as one of them. If winning 13 games last year wasn't enough for the coach to keep his job, will this guy have to win at least 14 to get a second year? Play the upperclassmen so that parents are happy? I’m guessing the admin knew this would be a tough year. Can’t imagine letting anyone go after just one season, especially with multiple recent changes.

Talk is that Seven Allen(Madison) and Jakob Legron(Mansfield) are enrolling at Lexington. I know kids transfer all the time to play with friends and title hunt, but that’s gotta be so tough for schools competing against them to know that the deck is stacked even more.

Anyone starting to hear names for this job? Getting awfully close to summer. Maybe it's being kept under wraps after the whole situation with Mansfield's girls coach.

Hard to blame Furr on this one though. Like unc4life said, how often does a board actually say no on a hire?
I'm guessing the board dug into why he was let go from a previous job and didn't want to deal with it. Seems like he's bounced around alot.

I think you're probably right sportsvideo. Seemed the team was performing pretty well given what he started with and where he ended, but I don't follow things super close.
Isn't Balogh's son coaching in Columbus? Might he be interested?

Good point on not wanting to follow a legendary coach. Plus that was during Covid with lots of uncertainty and a sure rebuilding year or two. Then again, coaches who do some research might be scared off by the turnover for coaches at Ontario. Who is going to want to move from out of area if there is a 2 year window of job security?

Sheesh. Really wish they would look at an alumni for this, but if they administration doesn't support its coaches then I'm not sure who would want to come back. This doesn't matter at all, but in the ad you shared they are asking for letter of intent, resume, and 3 letters of recommendation. Most schools just ask for a resume and references. I guess they want candidates who are serious enough to have their references write recommendation letters in advance to weed out those who are just dipping their toes in the water.

I have heard from more than one source that Mergel’s coaching contract was not renewed by the board. Can anyone local confirm or deny this? Most recent talk is that he is fighting the release. Supposably the parents of former Shelby kids are the driving his dismissal. I hear the place is a mess. Girls basketball head coach is sabotaged by his jv coach, whose husband is on school board, then she gets hired as head coach. Softball coach is looking to get out because of crazy parent. Baseball coach may not last the season. Cross Country coach almost not renewed because a helicopter parent did agree with her. Signs around town posted about firing the football coach. And now the basketball coach for the boys is being run out by parents. I have no clue how true all this is, but that’s sort of the environment HS sports has gone. Anyone from Ontario able to elaborate? I never did catch why the girls bball coach was let go mid-season. Just seems a little wild to me that this has all started in the last few years at Ontario? Or has it always been this way and Balogh was just impervious due to his reputation. I gotta say that down in Central Ohio it doesn’t matter at all what the history is. Several 20+ year coaches with massive success have been let go out of nowhere these last couple seasons.

Ontario 62, CF 59 Ontario was without their #2 scorer, out with an injury. Their leading scorer was ejected from the game in the 4th quarter after getting 2 Technical Fouls for arguing with an official over getting thrown to the floor and no foul being called. CF made 3 of the 4 free throws and got the ball. Down by 9 Ontario's 3rd leading scorer fouls out. Ontario battled back from down 9 with 3 minutes left in the game with bench players making several big baskets, steals, rebounds and free throws. Wow! That’s wild! Sounds like a lot of desperation from Ontario and a bit of panic from Clear Fork. I know if a coach gets ejected that he has to serve a 2 game suspension. Does that apply with players too?

Ontario starters didn't play after the mid point of the 3rd quarter. Running clock shortly after the start of the 4th quarter. Clear Fork has a football team playing basketball. CF head coach called a timeout in the first quarter when the lead got to double figures. After that none of their 3 coaches got off their chairs, did no coaching and their facial expressions never changed. Ontario JVs won by 30 something. Freshmen won by 20 something. Congrats to Galion on their 5 point win over Clear Fork. I was wondering how a team could win by 60 these days with the running clock. Sheesh.

I saw in the News Journal article that Schnittke will be staying on as an assistant. Henige will also be around to help with the transition. I like that! Sounds like he’s not just going to come in and start completely doing things his own way. Seemed very humble and understanding of the task at hand. I like the hire! Seems good for the culture!

Madison coach mergel on the list for Ontario job. I heard last night the Head Coach from Cambridge High School applied. I'm guessing no Mark Rinehart interest? Or the other alumni who is coaching down near Columbus? If no alumni interested who understand the tradition, I'd think an experienced coach with success would be the best option, but with so many openings this year across the state that may be difficult to come by. Regardless, I'd prefer it to be someone who is in it for the long haul and not just a stop on their coaching ladder. Stability is so important but seems to be on the way out.

Not to post a conversation I'm having with myself, but I did find the alumni coach I was thinking about. He coaches at Shekinah Christian School in Plain City and graduated Ontario in 2004 according to the school website. Not exactly a big name school and it would be quite the leap anyway.
My guess is that they'll get lots of outside applicants and probably go with a young, enthusiastic coach. I just have a hard time believing they'd go with an older coach unless they plan to bring Blake Balogh in a few years after the next coach leaves. That would be interesting!

I believe there’s another alumni coaching down in central Ohio. I remember seeing an article in a paper a couple years back saying that he graduated from Ontario. It was a small school from what I recall.
If they can’t find an alumni who understands the tradition, my hope is that it isn’t someone who hops around a lot. I don’t expect the new coach to stick around for 36 years, but I’d hate to see coaching changes multiple times every decade like some other places. Gotta keep that developmental pipeline strong.

Goodness what a legend. Never one to brag even a little. He would always deflect praise to his players and coaches. He could have easily announced this would be his last year or come back next year and gotten a farewell tour, but he never wanted it to be about him.
I know everyone sees this as a great landing spot and there is definitely a great developmental system, but starting the coaching staff from scratch, if true, would be really tough. I’d have to think they would want to find someone with at least some Ontario ties like an alumnus who understands the tradition. There’s only a couple alumni coaches I know of. Anyone want to bring Mark Rinehart back to Ohio?
But the tough part is replacing that stability. Any idea if there will be a handoff of sorts? Or if the new coach would start clean. I’d hate to see years of development into those camps, summer leagues, and joint open gyms just stop.

I think the biggest thing with Galion, they have to learn to play as a team again. The last three years Galion had one guy that can score consistanly. Once they can learn to play as a team then they can win the games they should win and then complete with the top of the MOAC. That and a consistent system. Changing coaches every other year makes it really difficult for the kids to buy into the culture and become familiar with the coaching system/style.

SO, did the family move to the RV District or did he Open Enroll and thus will only be eligible for the first 11 games? Sorry I can’t help with that. My third hand knowledge is pretty limited. All I know is that it was a nice win for Ontario against a decent opponent!

The new player for RV I believe is Beard, a scrappy, hard nosed player who was on BV last year. The rumor I heard was that Beard got into a fight with the star player from BV (the one who nearly broke his neck last year) and there was no way he could come back given the messed up team chemistry.
Please know that this is all third hand and could be completely false. This is just what I heard in passing, so please don’t treat it as the truth unless someone else can confirm it.

A freshman who might have the potential to play varsity this year. Poor phrasing by me.
Granted, I'm now in Central Ohio and don't have my pulse on the area, so I just heard that from the 270 Hoops analysis of one of their events. Who knows how accurate their prediction might be. Shelby seems to have had several players take the trip down 71 for their events in the past, which is how it caught my attention (they loved Pugh since he was a freshman).

Some one is not accurate but it's not who you claim. The Upchurch kid ran cross country at Northmor his freshman year. You are VERY accurate. The kid began high school as a Knight and then transferred after fall sports and played winter sports at his new school and now is looking to play sports for his 3rd high school in the same number of years. Off to a good start! Way to get along everyone! Who cares about the semantics? It doesn't matter even a little bit other than to two people who like to irritate each other lol. What does matter is that this would be a hit for Ontario. I'm not super knowledgeable on the area since I moved a few years back, but based on what I see online from the hype machines, it looks like Shelby has some studs (including potential freshman) and should be in good shape for the foreseeable future.
