Here are some updates on the North Coast Inland Trail, which is a recreational rail trail system across North Central Ohio being built and maintained by various park districts, municipalities and volunteer groups.
In Bellevue, plans for the trail extension along the south edge of US 20, which Bellevue won a big grant for several years back, have been submitted to ODOT and as long as everything gets approved construction should begin later this year. The new trail will extend Sandusky County's portion of the NCIT from its current end point at CR 177 to SR 18 in downtown Bellevue, and be built within the US 20 and CR 177 right of way, partially as a widening of existing Main Street sidewalks and partially as a new asphalt path adjacent to the road shoulder.
In Fremont, the Sandusky County Park District recently received a grant to study expansion and improvements to the trail's route through the city of Fremont. There will be a feasibility study done to explore ways to connect the trail system to various Fremont locations such as Terra State, the Hayes Presidential Center and the downtown area.
In Wakeman, Firelands Rails to Trails is nearing completion of the Bruce L. Chapin Bridge project, which is the conversion of an 1872 stone double arch railroad bridge over the Vermilion River for trail use. So far this spring railings have been added to the bridge deck, and approach trails and a parking lot have been completed. What's left to finish are additional railings along the approach trails, as well as posts and signage, and that part of the project will begin in early July. Once completed and open for use, the bridge will offer an alternative to the parallel US 20 bridge for bike and pedestrian traffic, and offer a stunning view from 60 feet above the river. There are also plans in place by Lorain County and ODOT for a trail extension that will connect Wakeman to the Lorain County portion of the NCIT.
