Ohio State Drum Major Competition 6 very talented candidates display their remarkable abilities. The winner clearly stood out from the rest and had that 'wow' factor.
After a Statistical tie, LaVange and Barr competed in a run off competition consisting of the ramp entrance and twirling routine.
John LaVange was announced as Head Drum Major and Konner Barr was announced as Assistant Drum Major

I don't remember his name anymore, but in the late 80's there was a young man from the Bucyrus area who was the Ohio State drum major. I used to work with him in Upper at a summer job during our college years. I always thought that was pretty impressive as he was a national twirling champion.

I do remember the drum major from Bucyrus. The lingering question in my mind is; how the heck does a young man or boy get introduced or drawn to baton twirling, of all things? I'm thinking, perhaps they had an older sister that was a majorette?
By the way, you need to manually move the cursor back to the beginning, because the video starts with the second contestant for some reason. The winner and kid that knocks my socks off is John LaVange, an amazing athlete, with skills and absolute precision, is at the very beginning.

I don't know. However, I do remember him coming to work one day at Guardian Glass, with a T-shirt that extolled his claim to fame as a national baton twirling champion, and before anyone could take a cheap shot at him, he had put the T-shirt on inside out so no one could read what it said. He really was a pretty cool kid...just wish I could find that name in my old dead brain cells... Found him..... Greg Eyer... top right column on the following page... www.aosfb.com/files/17_staff_7-14-17.pdf Or here: tbdbitl.osu.edu/marching-band/drum-major/biographies/eyer-1985

There was a Clyde kid who was a worl champion, and turned down the gig at OSU (IIRC). He made it through a decent way on America's Got Talent or the like. His brother was also top-notch athlete at Clyde. Really great guys, both of them.

The competition for OSU Drum Major is intensely competitive, with so many highly skilled competitors each year, knowing the winner is someone very special and uniquely qualified.
