That is too bad. He could have been a decent player for this new team and new coach. Agreed, more than decent imo esp against this schedule.

Agreed, more than decent imo esp against this schedule. Do you know if the new coach approached him and tried to get him to play? I don't follow things as close anymore so I can't comment. Flashes will move forward with those on the practice court and do their best for 17-18. I've heard some say a 4 win season, I have hopes for a few more than that and hopefully a hard fought tournament game or 2.

I believe this is Coach Beddingfield's belief as well. I'm fairly sure a kid or two who chose not to play was approached, but not by Beddingfield, other people who are close to the program and just trying to help, on a side note.....I agree with Scarlet on the Sowers situation, he is a good kid and the family are solid people, simply the kids decision, he played with the team during the spring and early summer, I'm betting he chose not to play based on the different level of expectations (as well as other things) that this staff has set forth.

I have to disagree that it is not a good idea to approach kids and ask them to play. This is like a big recruiting session when a coach has the luxury to walk the halls and talk to people that know who does and does not have basketball skills. Lets take for instance bailey, gardner, parrot, cofer and lietz. All these kids played last year (with the exception of gardner) and a coach isn't going to approach them and ask them to play? We are acting like it is beneath a coach to want kids to play for him yet we'll sit through years of struggles with not having enough kids to fill out rosters and complain when they struggle. I don't know if the coach asked these kids or not, my hope is yes and they had a good answer why they didn't want to play this year. With the sowers kid, what does different level of expectations mean? Was he told he would not start and that helped him make up his mind to play or not play?

Well of course the parent is going to say it is their kids choice. What else would anyone expect, her to come right out and say, we told him not to play. A starter to not playing because he just doesn't feel like it? Nobody buys that at all, the mom or dad or both have the say in this without a doubt.

Kids are soft these days. Kids need rules, structure and discipline, that is what toughens kids up. I saw in the paper where the administration doesn't know how to handle the cell phone issue in the school, entitled kids. How about you set the rules and everyone follows them, including teachers. You let kids bring their cell phones to school but once the 1st bell rings they have to be off and in their locker or backpacks, no exceptions for them or the teachers. They can turn them back on once the last bell rings. Ritz stated they can't take the phones because of liability. Well, if a kid gets caught breaking the rules how about a policy where they cannot bring the phone back for a week, get caught twice it is a month and a 3rd time, no more phone. That would be the rule, it is as simple as that, Ritz. We say kids are soft, I think it is pampered and entitlement.

Since there was more than one is it just possible that a few kids disliked the new coach more than they liked playing?

I've heard some say a 4 win season, If this is true why make a change. Serious question. The mighty board of education in all their infinite wisdom never makes a mistake and always holds people accountable, yes I am laughing out loud right now. This board wouldn't know a good coach from a bad coach, they go with who influences them the most. It was obvious this community likes these current board members otherwise they would have been replaced during this past election. You get what you pay for( or should I say vote for) so regardless of what anyone things about change, there will not be any real change at least for the next 4 years with Cok heading the BOE.

Been reading this forum for years but have never been the topic so I guess I will make a entrance! I'd love to discuss my son and my family with you all. First of all you are all wrong my husband Jeremy and I would have loved nothing more than to see our son on the hardwood this year, especially since we have spent every winter for the last 13 years watching him on it. Working for the 4 years that actually matter. So to say we lead him not to play, yeah never... to much money and time invested to not play with 2 years left of school. I myself really thought he would walk into practice that Friday and was more heartbroken and believe me it wasn't a day anyone wanted to be home at my house! You see my husband and I remain coaches in the Willard school system and remain true Crimson Flashes (unlike you negative voices on here). We have nothing but respect for the Varsity basketball coach and his assistant this year and if you know anything about my son he was the ball boy for Coach Hirschy. Also I would like to add yes Coach B came to our home to talk with Jerett when his decision was made! Now to fill you all in about my son! He is a very dedicated and hard working boy. His passion is football and track. Last year he came to us and did not want to play( no matter what anyone wants to believe playing for his Dad and basically second Dad was not fun for him in any way) and we basically made him. So when he came to us this summer and sat us down with his plan for the winter we accepted it. He will be preparing for track this spring and football next fall. Along with rehabbing his knee he fought with all season and that he had a MRI on last week. When your heart is not in something and is other places no matter how much you would like to change it you can't. So all that being said my husband and I still support the Flashes and will continue to support the Flashes. We understand discipline is the key as you stated above that is why we have the kid we do thanks! He's a pretty dam good kid!!!! Now let's talk about the topic that this thread was started for Willard scrimmages and the boys that are playing basketball! Go Flashes....

In one sentence you say "you made him" and the next sentence you state "you accepted his decision" the next year. Just seems ironic that the year his dad and second dad were coaching you "made him play" but when there was another coach you "accepted his decision" not to play. Glad Joe came to your house to see why he would not play, that should happen with all athletes that were starters the year before and decide not to play the following year. No one is bringing your son's character into play here so no need to justify whether or not he is a good kid, he is a kid. The discussion is why are some of these kids that played last year not playing this year because Joe seems like a coach that brings discipline and structure and we would have liked to have saw these kids who played in the past still play today. The Flashes will be fine, they have talent and will work hard for quite a few wins this year.

Why would the best Soph who's playing as well as anyone at the end of the season, not want to be part a group working to win more than 4 games, just because there's a new coach? IMO a couple of apologies are called for.

I think it's funny that people just assume they know more about what's going on in a person's family than the family themselves.

You can't get on here and defend an action and not expect to be questioned, you know that. If they don't want questioned they should not respond to these post. It is fun trying to figure out the games being played to hurt the teams and coaches.

I don't see why the dad was mad, he was way over his head and should have never made it to the ranks of assistant to begin with. JV was a stretch too, maybe middle school would have been good for him. Never impressed with his ability to get players better but for some reason he kept being promoted. Perhaps Joe informed him he would not be a starter and that was the deciding factor.

Let's talk about the kids who are playing, even though I attend this site mostly for the arguments and to post like a 6th grade school girl. Reality is arguing like 6th grade school girl. Don't like the heat get out of the kitchen. As I stated earlier, this team has talent just like the teams in the past but I don't think anyone will ever say we don't have any talent like we have heard so many times in the past. These kids playing Varsity are some tough nosed kids and scrappers, they'll win some games because Joe will instill the fight in them and they'll play hard for him. They have a weak bench because they are young and some of the players that are upper classman that played last year are not playing this year. Had they, these freshman on Varsity could have stayed on JV and they would have been a pretty tough team. JV will win some games, they are hurting a little at the point though. Freshman will struggle but that is okay, new kids playing on the freshman team and this is a good sign for Joe's program.

One of the biggest regrets kids have is quitting or not going out for a sport they once were a part of. These few may not realize it now, but down the road, they will regret it. That is a fact.

I hear the reasoning all of the time that a kid is quitting one sport to prepare for another. However, I fail to see how NOT playing a winter sport(b ball, wrestling, swimming) can possibly help to prepare you better for track. Unless this kid somehow miraculously has access to an indoor track facility 5+ days a week, that is utter nonsense. Does Willard actually have an indoor track program that practices everyday for him to participate in?
