Does the MOAC have a rule against having a pep band at basketball games? I haven't seen one at any of the MOAC games and Ontario hasn't had one this year And they've always had one of the largest and best ones around. If there is such a rule, that's a crock. Not fair to the music students, not being allowed to show their talents

VERY poor decision. Takes away from the atmosphere. They NEVER had a problem getting kids to do it in the past.

Went to the Willard at Edison game last week and I expected the Edison band there blowing the roof off (they always play to loud for that place) but no band. They even played the national anthem by tape. That just doesn't feel right, saluting our flag by tape music.

It appears the problem lies with the new band director at Ontario. I will have to make my $.02 worth known. The design of the O'rena was specifically done to have a large Pep Band in the west balcony. One of the requirements asked for by Balogh.

Thank you for clarifying this, I have not been able to get to all the schools to see what they and the gyms look like but to me both Ontario and Norwalk High Schools have the finest around. I hope they don't move the band cause it kind of sets them apart from the rest of the spectators.

MrSteel, I don't know if you ever been to Norwalk High School gym but it really is unique. When you walk in to the school you see off to your left the cafeteria/study hall, for the everyone to sit down and eat/talk during half time. To the right is the Truck Stop, that's what we call our concession stand. In the halls there and in the cafeteria are TV's so you don't miss anything in the game. Then off to the left past the trophy's you enter this massive gym and hanging from the ceiling at center court is this big score board and on the west wall is this beautiful picture of a big semi truck crashing through the wall. There is ampule room on both sides for fans to sit with the home side having a balcony for more fans. I think the sitting cap. is about 2500 to 2800, I'm not sure on that but I think that might be right. Like I said both Norwalk and Ontario have the most beautiful gyms around.

I am a former member of a pep band (in the old NOL, hint, hint) back a few hundred years ago (.....in high school). Because of the fact that I have listened to a quite a few of the bands (recently) in the MOAC, and the fact that I have a relatively strong musical background, I can attest to "quality" when it comes to pep bands.
Some bands are pretty loud (which some people seem to like or hate) but are not very proficient when it comes to the necessary nuances associated with music (true musicianship). Some bands are quite proficient with those same nuances (again, true musicianship), but are not horribly loud (which some people like or hate as well). In short, "different strokes for different folks".
I was thinking about ranking the various bands by "quality" (in this post) according to "my" opinion, but I'd prefer not to.........fearing that someone's delicate sensibilities might become "offended"; so I won't. Now, I could be a "homer" and say that my old high schools' pep band is the best, but I'd be lying. I can say that there are a few pep bands that sound quite good and there are a couple of them that stink on ice. That being said, there are varying levels of both talent and leadership (just like with sports) that are on display whenever a pep band starts to play; regardless of the team itself or the league in which they play.
Bottom line: "Loud" isn't necessarily good or bad, and "more quiet" isn't necessarily good or bad. Music is in the "ear" of the beholder; but true musicians know the difference(s).

I'd like to see a huge "warrior" busting through a block wall at the O'rena too. But with the walkway on the east end connecting the upper decks on both sides, and creating a running area around the entire upper deck, there is no wall to burst through.

Music is in the "ear" of the beholder; but true musicians know the difference(s). you have that right about being loud or not. In my younger days I didn't mine the bands being loud inside but now that I'm old I can't stand it. I also agree that some bands the kids don't know how to carry a tune weather they are loud or not. I always wonder as many times you play your fight song how can you always hit the wrong note. And don't get me started on marching bands cause I wonder how hard it is to keep in step and have a strait line. I think for marching bands you need to hire a old drill sergeant to teach the kids their right from left. I said that to St. Paul's old band dir. and she asked me how do you do that. I told her to paint their left hand RED and their right hand WHITE then you yell out red, red, red, white, red.

Willard, how would it look if instead of the walls have a running warrior run though the block O on the floor. I think that would look great there too. You can have him with a raised tomahawk and have him running like he is going after the visitors bleachers.

Mrsteel, You have any information on that or what? I like the way the O'rena is now. I hope they don't change a thing. Not changing the O-rena, just where the band sits. Only a rumor as of now. No longer a rumor. At the 4th home game of the season the pep band finally made an appearance at a boys basketball game. They now sit in the upper deck behind the student section. I didn't count them, but it sounded like there were 12 drummers sitting in the first row of the upper deck, with the rest of the pep band sitting in rows behind them. It was unbearable. I saw several people who sit in the top row of the lower deck get up and move. To save my hearing, I'm going to either have to move to the far end of the O'rena near the commons area or sit on the the other side of the floor with the visitors. I can remember when a band director tried to tell the football coach when his football team should or should not be on the field. The football coach told the band director to remember ONE thing. There would NOT be a marching band if there wasn't a football team. In this case I think Balogh should tell the band director where the pep band should sit at Balogh Court in, who many call, "The House That Joe Built".

Willard and MrSteel, I saw on WMFD this mourning the Marion Harding at Ontario game and I saw the band sitting in the bleachers and those announcers must of had a headache after listening to the band. They are LOUD!!!!! I had to turn the sound down on my TV.

After one game with the Pep Band where the new band director wanted them, they are back to where Balogh wants them. You spend an extra $50K when the O'rena was built, for a special place for the Pep Band to be, that's where they should be.
