Just out of idle curiosity, how often has freshman and JV success translated to varsity success in subsequent years?

hasn’t, and probably won’t here. they have a good freshman and good jv team. that has transferred over well a lot of times. all though i look for ontario to run this league after this year in basketball.

It wasn't that GT was necessarily better than BV, it was just that the Tigers made less mistakes........at least it seemed that way to me.

Pleasant 58, Ontario 46.
Pleasant made their first 6 3-pointers by 4 different players and a bunch after that. Ontario didn't make a single 3-pointer in the game. Ontario was down by 12 -14 most of the first half, but battled back and led 41-39 in the fourth Quarter which has been the case in all but one of their losses. After that lead Pleasant outscored Ontario 19-5, which has been the case in most of their losses this year.
Pleasant has several athletic players that can drive it as well as shoot from the outside. And they play very good defense.
Pleasant over Ontario in the JV game 47-32.

I'll obviously take it but I would like to beat a decent team at some point. IMO the coach needs to go after this season. We're actually not playing any better this season, the competition was just much worse this year.

Any wonder what Coach Bright could have done with a player like Alsip on his team. To bad he stepped down.

Also had another player that went to Bluffton to play and another that could've played d3 ball but chose not to. He had the best senior class that Galion has had recently. They went 12-12, 6-8. He was better than we currently have, anyone would be, but he wasn't anything special like you're making him out to be. I would rather have Rich or Birie still.

There are 4 seniors and 2 junors (on JV) that should be playing but allows poor decisions and selfish play to occur. Even in victory, which have only been over not so great of teams, is sloppy and ugly. In dominated losses, the weak and lame excuse is that it is a young team. Next year there will not be a quality post on the floor and will still have 3-4 that play for themselves; the excuse next year is that is a tough CBC league and hide the lack of discipline, preparation, or team play. Two more years...

During the Coach Bright years, of which there were few; the kids really liked their coach, but the team (emphasis on the word "team") underachieved ( a lot). These last couple of years, with all due respect to the kids and their parents, the talent level has been down. That, plus I'm not buying what the coach has been selling, I just can't (and won't). Galion can do better........

We have 6 returning letter-men. How much more experience do we need??

These last couple of years, with all due respect to the kids and their parents, the talent level has been down. That, plus I'm not buying what the coach has been selling, I just can't (and won't). Galion can do better........ The kids did like Bright but that could've been because he acted like a kid. And I'm glad you can see that they underachieved a lot that year, that's how I see it also. That team had a lot of talent but did not really get better during the season and did not seem to get close to being where they could have been. I definitely agree that the talent level has been down the last couple years. That should be obvious. BUT the competition we've been playing against has also been WAY DOWN. IMO there has only been a handful of games where our opponents obviously had more talent. I can't and won't buy what this coach has been selling either. I know we probably won't be able to get a good, experienced varsity coach, but I would settle for anybody with more than 6th grade experience. I would even take our 8th grade coach, he seems to have been winning games and the kids seem to like him. I'll probably take anybody right about now, lol. BTW as of right now we are 0-23 against teams with winning records the last 2 years. That will likely be 0-24 after the Lexington game. But when we beat Crestline tomorrow that will give us 9 wins this year and that will probably be enough for our administration to think he's a good coach. They won't pay attention that all of those wins are against teams with losing records. Those wins have come against teams with these records: 2 against RV (4-15), 1 vs BC (5-13), 1 against Bucyrus (2-16), 1 against Cardinton (2-18), 1 against BV (7-14), and our 2 best wins have come against NU (10-10). Even the NU fan in this thread said that their only wins are coming against bad teams too.

I'm not going to debate anything you said but only point out Bright was there 1 season had as many wins or more than the 2 coaches you mentioned in 7 of their 8 seasons. My statement was not to make Bright out to be anything great but after one season he showed signs of success. You may be comparing Blair as a senior to Alsip as a sophomore. Blair was the player that went to Bluffton to play. I think the 09 class was a better group and Rich and Birie wanted out but Bright had plans to stay.

Well, Bright coached a 22 game regular season that Birie never coached and Rich only had in 2 of his 4 seasons. Did Bright show "signs of success" at Crestline when he went 4-17. And before you say it's Crestline, the previous coach had 3 wins so he only improved 1 win with a team that had another year of experience and Birie had seasons of 6,8,10,and 11 wins there. I think the "signs of success" was just winning games with Galion's best senior class since 09. The 09 class was a much better group but I meant since that class. I'm comparing Blair as a senior to Alsip as a sophomore because that's what Alsip is right now and that's what he would be if Bright was here too. Also, Rinehart went with Blair to play at Bluffton but got injured in the preseason. And another player had d3 colleges wanting him but he chose not to go to college. Just thought I would give you facts that your Galion buddies seem to be leaving out.

How did the coach do after Bright left Crestline with the same team? I'm not trying to compare Bright to a 30 year veteran Birie. My point was if he had been given two seasons to work with this Galion group it could be better than what you are seeing now. I'll give you Blair was better as a senior than Alsip is as a soph but I was talking about a coach working with a kid's development. Comparing the soph Alsip to senior Blair is a little unfair to say who is better when one has 2 more years to play. Rinehart was a good player for Galion but he was injured before he went to Bluffton and your mysterious 3rd player can be added to a long list of kids who have been wanted by D3 teams that never go. That happens often with so many of them playing jv schedules. Thanks for the facts, always appreciated.

Well Bright had Coffman who averaged 16ppg and I believe was a first team all conference player. The next coach had a team of mainly new players. But he did win 5 games last year and has 8 so far this year. Obviously Bright would do better than what we have now, I agreed with that. But just about anybody would be doing better. I would just prefer to still have Birie or Rich if we had a choice of recent coaches. You're the one that has defended the current coach and the administration(probably where you get your Galion information) that hired him. Like I've said plenty of times, they could've hired any of the other candidate and they would be doing better.

The previous coach had Coffman and Hunger to win 3 games and Bright won 4 with half of that duo. Good job by Coach Lisle with a couple nice players. Galion's problem is about anybody is not who wants that job, this is why I mentioned Bright originally. Had he been left alone to coach who knows. The difference between Birie, Rich and Bright coaching today's group is Birie and Rich wanted to leave, Bright wanted to stay. So he is the only choice you could have had. I have defended those who will place many parts of their life on hold to work with our kids while so many others just sit and judge their faults. Great coaches are not in great supply and those that are have good options. Sometimes our schools get the coaches we attracted but not all accept that reality. List your candidates?

Must've been tough to win NCC games with only one first teamer that averaged 16ppg and 5 seniors with varsity experience. I believe the previous coach had 1 senior.Bright's problem at Galion was brought on by himself. If he would've acted like an adult instead of a child he would still be here. The language he used, topics he discussed, and activities he allowed by his players, should not be allowed by a coach. Birie had trouble because parents thought he was being too tough on the kids and Rich just left because of an opportunity to return home to coach and work. I'm not going to list candidates. I've said before I've actually seen the list. You always ask people to list sources and information but never do it yourself. How about you list the candidates and which ones our current coach is actually better than. But you're clearly a close relative or friend of Bright or the administration so you'll just keep making excuses for them. You can just PM me if you want. Nobody else seems interested, they're probably getting annoyed. Lol

I don't know how tough it was and I guess neither of us have the ability to break an entire Crestline roster from 3-4 years ago. But I can say this years Galion team had at least 7 returning with varsity experience and an 18 point scorer. Birie and Rich both wanted out. Some reasons were different for each but they both had similar problems they wanted to get away from.
I did not expect to see a list and was hoping not to. I rarely ever ask anyone to relieve sources and do not in return. Sometimes privacy should be kept private.
I am neither a friend nor a relative to your former coach, but I am old enough to have seen some young coaches give up on coaching because of parents. I have no excuses to make nor do I want to. This began with a comment from me regarding how a different coach would have done with today's group. I never intended to compare him to a 30 year veteran or compare present players to those of the past.
Good luck to Galion at Crestline tonight. Another strong challenge that will surely make them better.

Galion returned 8 players with varsity experience. Six of them played a good amount of minutes and 5 of them started at least 1 game. I think Clear Fork is the only team in the conference that returns more experience.
Rich would have been back if it wasn't for Bellevue offering him the job there. He had problems but he was still going to return. Birie had problems with parents saying he was being too tough. I can't remember if he resigned because he got tired of it or if it was more of a forced resignation.
I know that the majority of the time parents' complaints about coaches are unjustified, but sometimes they are justified in their complaints. It's not always that the kids are soft or that their kids are not getting enough playing time like most people assume when a parent complains. There are times when the coach's actions are wrong and the parent's/player's complaints are justified.
