North Union and Buckeye Valley are out. MOAC keeps going northeast. Who is next?

Apparently Galion had an open gym in the beginning of August and was reported to ohsaa. For those that don't know, August is a no contact month for basketball.

Have they been put on double secret probation?

Have they been put on double secret probation? Have they been on a "secret probation" before? The only probation I remember is from Hawkins recruiting but that wasn't secret.

That was the line from the movie Animal House. I would predict they were told not to do it again.

I was always under the impression that so long as there was no instruction or direction given by the coach(es) it didn't count as contact. At least that was how it was explained to me by a former girls coach.

At least that was how it was explained to me by a former girls coach. Not even open gyms. The only thing they can do is supervise weight lifting and that was just added recently. It used to have to be a weight room coordinator that did the supervision but they changed it to allow the basketball coaches because not every school could afford a coordinator.

Yup, just what gt1975 said. I'll second his statement that the only coach activity allowed during the no-contact period is weightlifting/conditioning and that's because some schools were being punished since they didn't have a weight room coordinator.
The basic schedule, which is pretty well hammered home by OHSAA from what I understand, is:
1) First Friday of November - final tournament game (February/March): No restrictions. 2) First 28 days after last tournament game: No-contact period. 3) Remainder of April-May: Open gyms are allowed (no coaching or instruction when more than 4 players are present) 4) June-July: Open gyms are allowed, as well as 10 days for instruction, practices, scrimmages, team camps, etc. 5) August: No-contact period. 6) September-day before season starts: Open gyms/4-man workouts are allowed.
Why would there be separate open gym period if the no contact period meant the same thing? A simple Google search spelled out the rules pretty clearly in a ton of memos from OHSAA to coaches and added the purpose of the no-contact period. I can't imagine a coach not understanding the guidelines unless they were trying to bend the rules to their favor:
"The purpose of the “No-Contact Period” is essentially 2-fold: 1. Give the kids a break! The basketball season is one of the longest of sport seasons and mentally and physically players should get a necessary break. 2. To permit the next sport season to begin without undue influence on basketball players prohibiting them from participating in a spring sport."

June/July rules are broke by many schools. Galion got caught. Others cheat without getting caught.

Galion broke the August rule, which is the simplest rule of all.

Galion's no contact period was extended to Sept 16 as a penalty for having the August open gym

That is a safe and simple penalty that should not hurt them with guys in fall season sports.

Doing some research and been to couple open gyms and the 270 hoops fall league. BV 22’ Troy Scowden start for BV as a freshman? He may be a d1 player. He was legit in fall league and he’s still got awhile to grow. Had a nice poster slam in fall league. BV is going to be good next few years.

4, I've said since they were in 5th grade to watch this class at BV. Troy works hard and gets better everytime I see him. Can hit from outside also. Dylan Thompson is another freshman to watch this year. In my opinion he is close to being a starter but is a great 6th man. Has a knack of knowing where the ball is going to be and can score going to rim. Can hit 3's as well. They will be fun to watch

Alsip's dad is Galion's new jv coach. He coached Alsip at the youth level and is the assistant coach on his aau team.
Mr. Gossom is the new freshmen coach.

BV will be better this year, but still might be a year away from being really, really good. They should be set with talent for the next 3-4 years. Ontario, Pleasant, and Shelby will also be very good. There will be some really good games this year in the MOAC I can’t wait to get out and see some of these teams play.

BV had a couple upset last season playing with a young group and should be improved if work was put in and some nice players can be added as implied. Shelby could go to the front of the line. They have some good players coming back and added a transfer that can be inserted into varsity playing time instantly. They could be very athletic and tall with the right group on the floor. Ontario may have some things to figure out. 2 players are gone to Mansfield, a third may have an injury that keeps him out all season and a fourth player is bouncing between being an Ontario, Toledo area and CC student. Galion adds another dad to the coaching staff, interesting. Clear Fork returns most of it's players but the one they lost will be tough to replace.

A friend got me last season's MOAC stats so I'll post info about what every team has returning once the season gets closer. In the meantime is there any stats that anybody wants to see right now?
*I don't have full stats for Shelby just some stats I found for a couple players.

Harding will be bottom of the moac. Even Galion should beat them twice this year I’m thinking. Could be decent if players developed but none of them work year round. Bv should be improved. POY I’m going to say either Ethan Warner or Alsip, Alsip should be able to chuck up any shot he wants again this year just because he’s allowed to. CF and Shelby will compete for top looks like, Ontario trending down possibly and RV at bottom with harding.

I don't know if Harding developed or not but they only lose one player that played in more than 15 games. Their returning players accounted for 76% of their scoring last year which is the 2nd highest percentage in the conference. So they barely lost anything... I don't think Alsip will be POY. The coaches vote on that and I think they recognize that he just chucks up shots and rarely plays defense... I think Pleasant and Shelby will be the top two. Pleasant didn't lose much from their 20-5 conference championship team.

If I remember correctly wasn't there a bunch of drama at the end of Shelby's season last year with a kid or kids quitting or something?
