A beautiful weekend last week but unable to race do to flooding pushed the race to today. Beautiful was not the story today 24 degrees and bone chilling wind did us no favors. With the cold runners wanted to keep warm ups on till the last second. We had an incident with a runners spikes caught in warm up pants just before the race that led to another one of our runners being behind the line when the gun went off. Poor course conditions made it tough to make moves during the race to move up and change a bad starting position. We are very proud of our racers they had quite the season going 205 wins to 3 losses against opponents through 13 meets. It was just hard that two of the loss came at the state meet today. I do believe this race could have turned out much different on another day. But give credit to Woodridge they have been a top notch program for many years and you have to be at your best to have a chance to beat them. They have been at every state meet since 2004 I believe this was the schools 8th championship plus 4 or 5 more top 4 finishes Congrats to Lex runner Kyle Johnston for winning round three of the post season battle against Shelby's Brown they finished one two today. Congrats to Shelby's Caleb Brown and Sam Logan for going all Ohio with 2nd and 4th place finishes and to Blake Lucius on his 21st place.
I’m sure things like what happen to us happened others as well. Some may have benefited in having extra time to get healthy while others had issues that went against them, we fell into the latter group. The weather did effect all the runners not just ours. Top 3-4 runners on a nicer day I would say go 15:20’s-30's. Slower times due to weather and muddy course condition is why early positioning was so critical on that day. You didn’t see the large swings in positioning, kids finished closer to where there starting position was. You didn’t see many of those 20-30 point position changes like you can on a dry course when a runner is more able to make moves.

Shelby runner Makenna Heimlich finished 95th she was not feeling well today. She had a great season breaking the school record. It was too bad she didn't get to race last weekend when she was strong and healthy instead of on a day she was sick.

MOAC Banquet 11-15-2018
Congrats to the MOAC First Team Cross Country Runners for the Boys Caleb Brown Shelby, Sam Logan Shelby, Braxton Tate Galion, Blake Lucius Shelby, Sam Swanger Shelby, Corbin Osborne Shelby, Cayden Payne Shelby
Congrats to the MOAC First Team Cross Country Runners for the Girls Makenna Heimlich Shelby, Ellie Maurer Ontario, Anna Gregg Ontario, Grace Maurer Ontario, Ariah Reuer Ontario, Bailey Kreft Buckeye Valley, Emma Hawk River Valley
Caleb Brown of Shelby was the Boys MOAC Runner of the Year and Makenna Heimlich of Shelby was the MOAC Runner of the Year for the Girls
Coach of the year for the Boys was from the league champion team from Shelby Coach Chris Zuercher.
Coach of the year for the Girls was from the league champion team from Ontario Coach Meghan Willeke.
Congratulations to these fine runners and coaches you have represented the MOAC at a very high level this year. Thank you and best of luck in the future.
This is a bit of redemption from the 3rd place at CC state. Showing this Shelby team really was one of the best distance groups in the state. I know its not CC but a sweep of all the distance events at the state indoor meet is worth posting again.
OATCCC D2/3 Indoor State Championships 3-2-19
Shelby boys had a great showing winning state championships in all four of the distance events.
State champions in the 4x800 Caleb Brown, Sam Swanger, Sam Logan, Blake Lucius 800 Lucius, 1600 Logan, and 3200 Brown
Brown's win in the 3200 set a new meet record 9:12.55 . The 4x800 had a shot to set the meet record. Brown led off then Swanger then Logan. By about 300 into Logans split he had such a commanding lead that coach Z motioned for him to ease up and the same for Lucius that followed. Wanted them to save it for their individual events. Both of these boys are capable of much faster splits if needed. It paid off with individual wins also. These four boys in just 4 events scored 40 points and took home the state runner up trophy by behind Dayton Dunbar with 46. Dunbar had a whole lot more people and in a lot more events than what Shelby was in. These four distance events were the only running events Shelby was in the one other boys event was Caleb Henkel in the Long Jump who ended up 15th.
I will try to post some more later about the girls and check on what some of the other MOAC schools did at the meet. I do know Shelby's Makenna Heimlich won the girls 800
Are you predicting a sweep in all distance events for Shelby at the REAL State meet?
If healthy Shelby will make a good showing in distance at outdoor state. Warren should be the favored team for the 4x800 since they finished ahead of Shelby last year and they return everyone. They will be very strong this year and Shelby will have there hands full trying to beat them . I will pick Brown in the 3200. But the 800 and 1600 will be very competitive there are some great runners that show up that day. I think we have the runners to possibly place top 3 in each event. If you are leading to outdoor is more competition than indoor yes you are right the state of Ohio puts out some great athletes. Will be fun to see what happens.
Lex moved up to D1 in track last year, they did not face each other nor will they this year in post season. Brown was fourth last year behind 3 seniors that graduated , Joe Spitzer 1st , Zach Kreft 2nd, Luke Brown 3rd

11-2019 Updates on a few of Shelby's runners from last year
Sam Swanger just finished up his freshman season running for MVNU. Highlight for his season was probably being part of MVNU’s first ever team championship at a meet. They were 1st out of 13 teams at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge in Grand Rapids Mich. Sam was a big part of the win finishing 2nd for MVNU 7th overall. Things are looking up for MVNU projected to be 9th or 10th in their 10 team conference this season they finished 6th nice improvement especially considering the current number 1, 2 and 6th ranked teams in the nation for NAIA are in their conference IWU, Taylor, Huntington.
Makenna Heimlich spent her rookie season with Akron rehabbing an injury, look forward to seeing her next year and this year in track. Maddie Heimlich and Blake Lucius did not compete in CC expect to see them all in track this year.
