Cross country season is officially here! Who will win the final NOL XC title for the boys? According to Milesplit, the rankings are as follows:
1. Norwalk (49) 2. Shelby (50) 3. Tiffin Columbian (62) 4. Bellevue (100) 5. Willard (110) 6. Ontario (135) 7. Sandusky (no team)
Norwalk is still strong, though the loss of their two top guys (Berry and Nash) will hurt them. Shelby, meanwhile, loses only one of their top 5 (#4 man Robert Moore). Columbian, though hurt by the loss of #3 man Forrest, is still ranked third, but according to Milesplit only has 5 guys returning, which is a concern. Bellevue loses 2 of their top 5 (Schalk and Branum) and Willard looses 4 of their top 5 (Barnett, Vipperman, Strayer and Hillis), both of which will be very hard to make up for. Ontario brings back all of their top 5, while Sandusky loses 2 of their 5 total guys.
My prediction is that Norwalk will win the final title, as they have more depth than Shelby, especially with their #6 and #7 guys, and are known to perform very well at the league meet.
Less than three weeks until the meets start!

On Saturday, Ontario traveled down to Hebron for the OHSAA Preseason Invite. The school ran eight boys and finished 21st out of 23 teams in the D2 division. They were lead by junior Dylan Hunter (19:03), followed by Boebel (20:29), Walters (20:35), Watts (21:29) and Glenwright (22:09). Though not particularly strong, Ontario will at least have enough for a full varsity team.
NOL schedule for the following week is as follows:
Aug 22- Bellevue at Margaretta Shelby at Mansfield Madison for Richland County Championship Aug 23- Norwalk & Willard at the Willard Early Bird Invite Tiffin Columbian at the Upper Sandusky Icebreaker Invite Aug 27- Norwalk, Ontario, Tiffin Columbian & Willard at the Seneca East Tiger Classic
Couldn't find a Sandusky schedule but I assume they will be at the Willard Early Bird, as they usually attend that meet. Their middle school runs at Seneca East on Saturday but not sure if their high school team has a meet or not. Good luck to all teams in the first week of the season!

Norwalk Boys won the Willard Invite tonight. Seven of the top 10 finishers were Norwalk guys. Looked strong for the first meet.

On Monday, Bellevue edged out Margaretta in a two mile race by one point to win the tri-meet, claiming 31 points. Bellevue was led by runner-up Landon Woodard (11:58), followed by Zach Cleveland (12:19), ? (13:01), Ian Seymour (13:02), and Christian Booze (14:36). There was a considerable gap between the 4th and 5th guys, which may hurt, especially in a full 5k race.
Also on Monday, Shelby won the Richland County Championship, nearly sweeping the meet with 16 points. They were lead by Danny Friebel (17:08), followed by Sam Logan (17:22), Caleb Brown and Alex Moore. One of the Whippets' lead runners, Tyler Green, was out with an injury but should start running again at the end of the week.
On Tuesday, Norwalk won the Willard Early Bird Invite for the second year in a row. They dominated with nearly a perfect score: 16 points. Norwalk was lead by Julian Go (17:41) and Ethan Bores (17:45), followed by Christopher Mohr (18:28), Cobey Kromer (18:28) and Owen Lottman (18:51). Their depth helped push Willard back even farther as they claimed the next four spots as well. Meanwhile, Willard placed second with 61 points, led by Garrett Risser (19:13) and followed by Justin Gillmor (19:21), Blake Smith (19:35), Prescott Lillo (19:55) and Nick Bauer (20:29). Lead runner Branden Carlson dropped out near the end of the race, but should be alright to race on Saturday. Sandusky had no team score as they only had three runners, and were led by Malci Rhodes (21:12).
Also on Tuesday, Tiffin Columbian finished sixth at the Upper Sandusky Ice Breaker. They were lead by Jacob Anderson (17:08) who placed fifth, followed by Tanner Schreiber (17:34), Kerrick Fanning (19:20), Brayden Shedrick (19:55), and Jacob Marquis (20:24). Their next best runner is at 22:28, however, so injuries within the top 5 will be something to watch for.

I voted for Shelby after watching them run at the Richland county meet on Monday. To have four runners in the 17s (with their possible lead runner sitting out) on the notoriously slow Madison course is impressive.

Columbian placed 11th out of 15 teams and was lead by Jacob Anderson, who placed 7th with a 16:32, followed by Tanner Schreiber (17:33), Kerrick Fanning (19:25), Brayden Shedrick (19:45), and Jacob Marquis (19:57). Willard placed 6th out of 15 teams and was lead by Justin Gillmor, who placed 20th with a 18:44, followed by Blake Smith (18:55), Garrett Risser (19:19), Prescott Lillo (19:31) and Clay Gahring (20:04). Ontario placed 9th out of 15 teams and was lead by Dylan Hunter, who placed 17th with a 18:32, followed by Carson Walters (19:25), Alec Glenwright (19:58), Connor Watts (20:37), and Daniel Brown (20:50). Sandusky did not place but was lead by Malci Rhodes (20:51), followed by Taylor Colaizzi (21:49) and Nick Reed (24:17).
NOL schedule for this week is as follows:
Aug 30- Norwalk, Sandusky & Shelby at Bellevue Aug 30- Ontario & Tiffin Columbian at Willard Sept 3- Ontario, Shelby, Tiffin Columbian at Ashland Invite Sept 3- Bellevue & Willard at Bucyrus Elks Invite
Couldn't find where Norwalk and Sandusky were running on Saturday. Good luck to all teams!

Aug 30- Norwalk, Sandusky & Shelby at Bellevue I'm not familiar with CC all that much....so I have the following question: how unique is Bellevue's course setup at the Rec Center? I happened to drive by there today while this meet was going on and thought that it was interesting seeing the kids running so close to the street, as part of the course closely followed most of Cherry Blvd and a small section of Monroe St along the Millpond.

Bellevue's course is different in the aspect that it is basically a 1 mile loop that the kids run 3 times.
Yes, there are parts that are close to the street, but they try to mark the course in the grass above the sidewalk (away from the street).
The parking lots pose the biggest obstacle as you have to make sure there are people available to stop traffic as the kids cross in a couple different positions.
This is not unheard of - as Tiffin and Ontario both have areas where they run across the street within their park.
Also - Sandusky's course at Osborne Park takes them across a street.

On Tuesday, Shelby won the NOL quad meet at Bellevue with 18 points. Shelby took the top four spots, lead by Friebel, Moore, Logan, Brown and Green (#8). Norwalk placed second at the meet with 45 points, lead by Bores (#5), Go (#6), Kromer (#9), Dominquez (#12) and Berry (#13). Bellevue placed third at the meet with 71 points, lead by Woodard (#7), Cleveland (#10), Fuehring (#25), Seymour (#29) and Thompson (#38). Sandusky placed fourth, lead by Rhodes (#30), Codlron (#31), Colaizzi (#35) and Reed (#57). The top 5 runners were all under 17:00, though I heard that Bellevue's course is only 3 miles instead of 3.1? Either way, I might have to change my Norwalk vote to Shelby!
Also on Tuesday, Columbian won the NOL tri met at Willard. I know Anderson from Columbian won the race but do not know Columbian or Ontario details after that. Willard was lead by Gillmor (#5), Risser (#6), Smith (#8), Bauer (#10) and Carlson (#11). If anyone has more details about this race feel free to share.

Today, Willard placed 5th and Bellevue placed 11th out of 22 teams at the Bucyrus Elks Invite. Willard was lead by Justin Gillmor who got 34th with an 18:23, followed by Gahring (18:31), Smith (18:37), Risser (18:38) and Bauer (18:59). Bellevue was lead by Landon Woodard who got 11th with a 17:16, followed by Cleveland (17:45), Seymour (19:03), Fuehring (19:03) and Pocock (21:26). Bellevue had 4 runners in the 21s today and just needs to move one of them up closer to the top 4!
Also today at the Ashland Invite, Columbian placed 11th out of 17 teams in the D1 race, while Shelby placed 1st and Ontario placed 6th out of 12 teams in the D2/D3 race. Columbian was lead by Tanner Schreiner who got 29th with a 17:03, followed by Anderson (17:05), Fanning (18:12), Shedrick (18:45) and Marquis (19:16). Shelby won the meet, after having gotten a distant 3rd place at last year's meet. The Whippets were lead by Danny Friebel who got 6th with a 16:59, followed immediately by Green (17:04), Logan (17:06), Brown (17:07) and then Moore (17:21). Their sixth and seventh guys were within 45 seconds of their fifth guy. Ontario was lead by Dylan Hunter who got 18th with a 17:48, followed by Boebel (19:07), Walters (19:13), Brown (19:13) and Glenwright (19:50).
This week's NOL schedule is as follows: Sept 6- Columbian & Sandusky at Shelby Sept 6- Bellevue, Norwalk & Willard at Ontario Sept 10- Bellevue, Columbian, Norwalk, Ontario, Sandusky, Shelby & Willard at Tiffin Carnival
It will be interesting to see where each team stands as they all run at Tiffin Carnival this Saturday. Good luck to all teams!

Yesterday, Shelby won their home tri meet with 20 points. Their pack was more spread out than usual but still managed to do the job, as Caleb Brown finished second with a time of 17:38, with the rest of the varsity team finishing within the next two minutes. Columbian came in second with 42 points as Jacob Anderson won the race with a time of 17:35, though their number five man was nearly five minutes behind him. Sandusky came in third but had no team, as they only have 4 runners, and Malaki Rhodes finished fifteenth with a time of 20:41. I heard that a lead Columbian runner took a wrong turn somewhere on the course but Shelby still had the victory in the bag.
Also yesterday, Norwalk won the quad meet at Ontario with 17 points. The Truckers were lead by Julian Go and Ethan Bores, who finished first and second with times of 18:13, with the rest of their varsity team less than 30 seconds behind them. Ontario came in second with 71 points, narrowly beating Willard, and was lead by Dylan Hunter, who placed fourth with a 18:31. Willard came in third with 73 points and was lead by Justin Gillmor, who finished fifteenth with a 19:56. Willard's pack was much stronger than Ontario's but was just a little too far back to be able to defeat the Warriors. Bellevue came in fourth with 86 points and was lead by Landon Woodard, who finished eighth with a 18:43, with their fifth guy finishing about four minutes later.
It looks like many NOL teams are struggling this year with finding a strong & consistent fifth, fourth, sometimes third guy. We'll see what happens as they all race at Tiffin on Saturday.

As every NOL team raced at Tiffin Carnival today, I put together a little virtual meet and scored it. Though the weather changed throughout the day quite a bit, this will give a rough estimate of there the teams are this season. This list includes top 7 runners from each team with top five scoring:
1. Jacob Anderson: 16:24 (Columbian) 2. Tanner Schreiner- 17:04 (Columbian) 3. Julian Go- 17:14 (Norwalk) 4. Caleb Brown- 17:28 (Shelby) 5. Sam Logan- 17:29 (Shelby) 6. Ethan Bores- 17:30 (Norwalk) 7. Owen Lottman- 17:32 (Norwalk) 8. Alex Moore- 17:34 (Shelby) 9. Tyler Green- 17:36 (Shelby) 10. Landon Woodard- 17:36 (Bellevue) 11. Danny Friebel- 17:39 (Shelby) 12. Christopher Mohr- 17:44 (Norwalk) 13. Quinnlan Hipp- 17:45 (Norwalk) 14. Kerrick Fanning- 17:54 (Columbian) 15. Robert Vazquez- 17:56 (Norwalk) 16. Nicholas Berry- 18:08 (Norwalk) 17. Zach Cleveland- 18:21 (Bellevue) 18. Sam Swagner- 18:23 (Shelby) 19. Garrett Risser- 18:35 (Willard) 20. Justin Gillmor- 18:35 (Willard) 21. Dylan Hunter- 18:39 (Ontario) 22. Blake Smith- 18:46 (Willard) 23. Blake Lucius- 18:50 (Shelby) 24. Brayden Shedrick- 18:59 (Columbian) 25. Clay Gahring- 19:14 (Willard) 26. Carson Walters- 19:19 (Ontario) 27. Nick Bauer- 19:23 (Willard) 28. Josh Calderon- 19:27 (Sandusky) 29. Jacob Marquis- 19:32 (Columbian) 30. Malci Rhodes- 19:45 (Sandusky) 31. Branden Carlson- 19:49 (Willard) 32. Alec Glenwright- 19:50 (Ontario) 33. Cortez Cary- 19:59 (Willard) 34. Connor Watts- 20:02 (Ontario) 35. Daniel Brown- 20:30 (Ontario) 36. Ian Seymour- 20:40 (Bellevue) 37. Corbin Houdeshell- 20:44 (Columbian) 38. Dwight Fuehring- 20:55 (Bellevue) 39. Taylor Colaizzi- 21:08 (Sandusky) 40. Clay Pockock- 21:29 (Bellevue) 41. Kameron Crandell- 21:31 (Ontario) 42. Josh Fanning- 21:35 (Columbian) 43. Jarred Massa- 21:56 (Ontario) 44. Austin Thompson: 22:00 (Bellevue) 45. Dylan Adkins- 22:05 (Bellevue) 46. Dylan Jarrett- 22:35 (Sandusky) 47. Caleb Risner- 29:29 (Sandusky)
1. Shelby: 37 2. Norwalk: 41 3. Columbian: 62 4. Willard: 96 5. Bellevue: 119 6. Ontario: 124 7. Sandusky: 151
As predicted, it should be a tight race for the final NOL championship! Again, this is not a perfect way of comparing teams, as many ran at different times of the day and in different weather, especially earlier races who had to run in the rain and later races who had to run in all the mud. NOL schedule for next week is as follows:
Sept 13- Bellevue hosts Fremont & Clyde Sept 17- Columbian, Norwalk, Ontario, Sandusky, Shelby & Willard at Galion Festival Sept 17- Bellevue at Lakota Myron Cline Invite
Great job to all at Carival today and good luck next week!

Yesterday, Shelby won the quad meet at Sandusky, followed by Willard, Ontario and Sandusky. I heard that many kids ran great and got PRs here.
Also yesterday, Norwalk won their tri meet at home with 29 points, followed by Columbian (42 points) and Bellevue (63 points). Columbian's Jacob Anderson won the meet. I read that Bellevue was missing six of their guys due to injury, but don't know if that would'be effected the score that much.

Yesterday, Bellevue placed 8th out of 11 teams at the St. Joseph Streak Invite in Fremont. The Redmen were lead by Zack Cleveland (10th at 17:47), followed by Fuehring (18:08), Pocock (20:07), Thompson (20:31) and Adkins (21:04).
Also yesterday at the Bill Brown Classic in Ontario, Willard placed 3rd out of 7 teams in the blue division while Norwalk, Shelby, Columbian and Ontario placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively out of 10 teams in the gold division. The Flashes were lead by Clay Gahring (7th at 18:10), followed by Smith (18:26), Gillmor (18:34), Risser (18:47) and Bauer (19:14). The truckers were lead by Julian Go (6th at 17:14), followed by Bores (17:15), Lottman (17:51), Wise (17:57) and Ogelsby (18:08). The whippets were lead by Robbie Gonzales (11th at 17:55), followed by Payne (18:07), Yee (18:08), Thornton (18:18) and Lewis (20:08). The tornados were lead by Jacob Anderson (1st at 16:35), followed by Shedrick (18:04), Marquis (18:10), Houdeshell (21:18) and Fanning (22:14). The warriors were lead by Cody Boebel (21st at 19:33), followed by Glenwright (19:34), Watts (19:39), Brown (18:53) and Whittaker (21:06).
Many lead runners did not run yesterday, including Woodard from Bellevue, Schreiner from Columbian, Hunter from Ontario, and many from Norwalk and Shelby's teams. Hopefully none of which are due to injuries! That being said, team placings from this weekend mean very little in terms of NOL standings.
Could not find where Sandusky ran this weekend, if they did run at all. Next week's NOL schedule is as follows:
Oct 1- Bellevue at Western Reserve John Speer Invite Oct 1- Columbian at Old Fort Invite Oct 1- Norwalk at Clay Eagle Invite Oct 1- Ontario at Pickerington North Panther Invite Oct 1- Willard at Buckeye Central Invite
I believe from this point on, no NOL teams will verse each other until NOLs on October 15th. Good luck to all teams this week!

That happened to many of Norwalk's runners. There were about 20 runners in that boys' race that made a wrong turn. That happened 2 years ago in one of the girls' races. You'd think they would have spotters in there to direct at those crossover areas. It can be confusing - especially when you're caught up in a pack.
Norwalk's top two runners are consistently Go & Bores. #'s 3 - 7 are a toss-up among Mohr, Kromer, Lottman, Berry, Hipp, Neuberger, etc. The nice thing is our depth allows the team to keep it close - even when we lose a couple of runners. Coach has the top 10 runners so close in time now. Should make for a very fun league meet!

A muddy day at the Clay Eagle Invite! No rain during the races though - thankfully.
Norwalk boys placed 2nd in the DI race with an average time of 17:35 - despite a couple of their varsity runners not competing yesterday.
Ethan Bores placed 5th overall with a time of 17:02. Julian Go was next for Norwalk at 17:12; followed by Owen Lottman - 17:45, Bobby Vazquez - 17:54, Cole Berry - 18:05, Cobey Kromer - 18:06, Matt Neuberger - 18:31, and Mitchell Sommers - 18:43.
Congrats also to the girls' team that placed 3rd in the D2 race! Their average time was 22:44 and their top 5 runners all ran under 24 minutes! Four girls in the top 20 - their top 6 runners in the top 30.
