Devastating loss for American Maura Abbott in women's road cycling today. After a horrible crash by the lead cyclist - Abbott took over and remained in the lead until the final seconds of the race. She was passed by 3 riders who looked like they were running on full tanks as she just ran out of gas. She would have been the first American woman to win gold in road cycling since the 84 Olympics! A total class act in her comments after the race. I get so frustrated with reporters asking, how did that feel to lose? Her answers were very respectful and classy - far from what I'd want to say. According to the Dutch Cycling group - their cyclist who crashed is in stable condition with a severe concussion and 3 small fractures in her lumbar spine. Very scary crash to watch!

Oksana Chusovitina is a 41 year old gymnast competing in her 7th Olympic games for Uzbekistan in the vault! She won gold in Barcelona and then a silver medal in the vault in Beijing. She may attempt the "vault of death" (the Produnova) in the finals. It is a move that many in the sport want banned due to its danger.
She also attempted the beam - but failed to make the finals.
Wow!

Watched the Abbott race. Bad break for the Dutch girl who crashed while leading. Abbott was riding alone in the lead while the trailing 3 drafted off of one another to save energy. I'm not certain that I would have been as gracefull in defeat.
Loved the men's' beach volleyball result for the U.S. The indoor result vs. Canada, not so much.

Unbelievable grit and determination shown by the British gymnast, Ellie Downie. She took a very awkward tumble during her floor routine - landing on her head and neck. She immediately got up to continue performing. After a few moves, she walked to the corner of the mat holding and shaking her head - knowing that she could not finish. She was immediately treated and helped out to the training room. Her sister is one of her teammates and was visibly shaken watching. Then Ellie returned during the vault competition to compete, as she is the anchor for her team. She completed 1 warm-up and 2 vaults, leading Britain to a 4th place team placement going into the finals.

Sweet seeing Phleps get gold number 20 while that cocky Le Clos didn't even make the podium
ALso loved seeing Lily King beat that doping Russian last night
and Ledecky keeps her amazing streak of international final wins alive

Phelps was unbelievable! And to come back later that night to anchor the 4x200 freestyle for his 21st gold! A tremendous showing!
The women's gymnastic team, "the Final Five," is sending Marta off into retirement in style! Once again hitting scores so that the other countries couldn't get close. Going into the last floor routine - Simone had to score no less than a 7.3 to win gold! She better than doubled that score! The girls just make it seem so effortless.
Can't wait until the track & field events start up! Hopefully they continue to build off this week's successes!

6.214 miles in 29:17...averaging around 4:45 per mile in the 10000 meter women's race. Ethiopian A. Ayana smashed the WR by 14 seconds today... 2nd place and 3rd place were the 3rd and 4th fastest times in history in the event and these three not only lapped other world class competitors, but actually lapped some of the TWICE! I'm an old shot put guy and really don't like distance racing (really - you have to be mental to enjoy that) but what this woman did today was incredible. If I understood the announcers correctly, it's only the second full 10000 meter race she's ever run as well.
Just incredible....

American Michelle Carter beat out the defending gold medalist (and favored) to win the women's shot put - 20.63 m (67+ feet)! She is the first American woman to win gold in the shot put.
Interesting fact . . . her father is Michael Carter who played for the 49ers. In high school, 1979 he set the American national high school record of 81 feet 3½ inches in the 12 pound shot put - still stands today. He won a silver medal in the LA Olympics, becoming the first American athlete to win both the Superbowl and an Olympic medal in the same year.
Michael is her coach and they are now the only father-daughter duo from Team USA to win medals in the Olympics.

Yes - Valerie Adams was the silver medalist. She had won the gold medal in the previous two Olympics.

So Rio has not been a safe Olympic zone for the athletes, coaches, trainers, etc.
Ryan Lochte was held up early Sunday morning at gunpoint, along with 3 other U.S. swimmers after men posing as police officers pulled their cab over. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but reports have come in from others that have been robbed or mugged, etc. Apparently two separate incidents of stray bullets entering the equestrian compound have been reported. The Rio police and IOC have not wanted these incidents publicized. In fact when asked about the Lochte incident - officials initially denied stating no report had been filed. Later it was deemed their denial was incorrect.

My guess would be this has happened at many Olympic sites. Very few probably get reported.

Starting to seem that Lochte was not honest in his story.

It is a bizarre situation. Heard last night that they pulled one of the American swimmers off his flight before it left. Lochte was already in the air on his way home, and the other two swimmers were detained before they could leave for their flights home.

This morning they are saying 2 swimmers were taken to the police station for questioning at the passport gate for their flight home. Lochte had already left as he was scheduled to return home earlier than the others. But the 4 swimmer is still out and about.

The latest. The tape of the incident was tampered with. Some time was removed. The first few seconds after the part that was removed, shows one of the swimmers with his hands up as he returns to his cab. I find it interesting that in Rio, gas stations must have several security guards on duty to protect their customers from being robbed.

They also have video footage of the swimmer's returning to the Olympic Village. At that time it "appeared" they were in possession of their wallets & phones - which they claimed had been stolen.
This whole incident is a giant cluster.
Four people know the truth - I'm not sure we will.

Final US medal tally: 46 Gold, 37 Silver, 38 Bronze, 121 Total. The next closest in Golds was Great Britain with 27 and the next closest in the overall total was China with 70.
Great job by Team USA, this was a fun Olympics to watch.
It was also nice having the host city only one hour off Eastern Time so we could see a lot of the big moments live in prime time.....something that won't happen again for a while as the next 3 Olympics are in East Asia

Ohio State wrestler Kyle Snyder wins gold at 97kg Considering his age, I thought this would have been a much bigger deal. Most gold medalists arent' good enough to do it until at least their mid twenties. I saw some matches, but most were Greco and of guys from other countries. Still wish they would actually show more wrestling when there is really such a large wrestling community. Olympic exposure to the masses could help our sport get free from the folkstyle stigma we suffer from when it comes to international wrestling....and why a small third world country can excel against us.
