7th Grade Port Clinton 52 Huron 6
First half was an even contest. PC pulled away big time in second half.
8th Grade Huron 42 Port Clinton 12
Huron rolled. PC only scored on a 70yd broken play scramble in first half and then with under 1:00 in game when they were down 42-6.
Got to see some things in PC..
Wow, that stadium is nice and it seems like everything has transitioned into a first class atmosphere. I think PC will be quite good for foreseeable future. My only complaint about what they're doing is that both junior high teams completely revolve around one player. 8th grade has a really good, tall QB/LB, but about mid-way through the second quarter the kid seemed really annoyed with having to do everything and it seemed as if he quit really trying. In the 7th grade game, PC has a phenomenal athlete (#13) but once again, he has to do everything.
Either way, the place looks great and congrats to PC for all that varsity success!

Last night
8th grade - Norwalk 28, Sandusky 26 7th Grade - Sandusky 16, Norwalk 8
Anyone know what happened with Shelby and Willard 8th grades yesterday (unless one had a bye?) At this point Willard and Norwalk all have 1 loss, and Shelby is undefeated I think. Norwalk plays Shelby next week.

7th Grade Edison 22 Huron 0
Edison is very good 7th grade team. The right athletes at all levels of defense. Good speed and an elite RB on offense.
8th Grade Huron 26 Edison 8

From what I know in 8th Grade SBC:
Perkins beat Huron and Edison; lost to Clyde; Season over at 6-2, 5-1.
Clyde beat Perkins; lost to Edison; Play Huron at 6:00 on Thursday
Huron beat Edison; lost to Perkins; Play Clyde at 6:00 on Thursday
As far as I can tell, winner of Huron/Clyde will share SBC title with Perkins.

Shelby 8th graders finish the season with a win over Norwalk tonight 46-6. They finish their entire middle school careers undefeated. Might be interesting to see how many of these kids might get the chance to play with the strong junior class next year. Could see a couple contributors.

All these scores and records are great, but mean nothing as to what the varsity level will look like when they get there. Example: I played on Perkins, and our team went undefeated in 7th, 8th, and freshman years. We never lost one game! We never even came close to losing a game. Matter of fact, we rolled over everyone by at least 2 TDs, a lot of those games by 30+ points. We were a scoring machine. It was a fantastic class of athletes. I was lucky enough to start varsity as a sophomore, but most of my team mates didn't. The next year when that undefeated, dominate class of players were all juniors, we started most of that class. Know what our record was at the varsity level? 3-7. Proof that Jr. high football means nothing as to what varsity is gonna be. For those of you who've never played, Friday night football is a whole different game.

I agree, but it's fun for all of the parents to at least know how their teams fare against other teams in the area. As like your example, in Norwalk this year's seniors were (I think) undefeated in football through MS. Then freshman year they almost couldn't field a team as a lot of kids quit to focus on other sports. What all these other levels mean to me - that kids are getting to play some football, some are learning to have success, some are learning they need to work harder, and some are learning it's just not their sport.

I agree with Pirate fan as far as Middle school translating to varsity success. At Huron, we never had tackle football until the 7th grade, so we usually start out way behind the other schools but progressively get better. My 7th grade year we went something like 2-5, 8th grade went 3-4, then freshman year we went 9-0. I think Freshman ball can be a good indicator, though. We had pretty good success at the varsity level, combining 3 Freshman classes that had a combined freshman record of 26-1. Ended up translating in to two regional appearances and an SBC title.

I agree that middle school football is FUN! And we enjoyed the heck out of being undefeated. I remember our bus getting a police escort home after our last 8th grade game. We felt important for sure! Odd thing is, or I guess it's not so odd, it seems pretty common across all schools, is that we had 55 kids on our 7th grade team, but our Senior year there were only 11 of us left.

Might be interesting to see how many of these kids might get the chance to play with the strong junior class next year. Could see a couple contributors. They would have to be standout athletes and even then probably only make an impact on special teams. Armstrong and Devon Williams are rare cases in Shelby in which freshman were starters on one side of the ball. Williams had the strength/size. Armstrong obviously had all the tools and beat out a Senior. Shorty Brooks on the other hand, as good as he has always been, barely played on Friday as RB...mostly just special teams (and played freshman and JV games). No need to rush a kid that may have some talent but maybe not mentally/physically ready for Friday night lights...let them have more success at the freshman/JV level first...build them up before the eventual let down. It will happen, those kids are going to have rough patches and the more positive experiences they have to fall back on the better off they will be...imo

If you're starting freshman on your varsity team, you must be hurting for talent in the upper classes. IMHO, there's a big size/maturity difference between a 14 year old and a 17-18 year old. I grew 3" and gained 40 lbs. between my freshman and senior years. Don't put them on the same field. Not a good idea. Ask SMCC.

I grew 3" and gained 40 lbs. between my freshman and senior years. Don't put them on the same field. Not a good idea. Ask SMCC. Depends, TC has had 3 players that I can remember through the years who started as frosh, and 2 of those 3 started on TC's power teams. Ethan Kagy from 2005-2008...started on defense as a safety. He was a 4 year starter on defense and also eventually became one of their main RB's from 2006-2008. Jack Jacoby from approximately 2009-2012 (someone can help me out on the dates). Started at LB at first, eventually became TC's stud RB for several years as well as at LB. I can assure you that the teams those two started on as frosh were not hurting for talent, both were typical loaded, NOL Champion, playoff qualifying TC teams. Both Kagy and Jacoby were approximately 5' 10" 180-190 lbs or so as frosh, so they were plenty solid enough for varsity and playing against 17-18 years olds. Drake DeVore is currently a frosh starting at LB for TC. This kid size-wise is an absolute monster. He's just about 6' 0", and weighs in at around 230-240 lbs. He's VERY solid and strong. Now, he would not be starting as a true frosh for TC back during TC's run of being very good year in and year out, but that's not because he doesn't belong physically. He only had 3 years of football experience going into this season, so it's been a HUGE jump for him playing Varsity LB.

There are always exceptions, but generally, a freshman isn't ready for varsity football. I remember Coach Farlow telling us as freshmen (we were undefeated, and kinda cocky ) that varsity football was for upperclassmen, and our time would come.

Except for rare occasions, or tiny schools, if a freshman is playing varsity it can usually mean the team is not very good.

Congrats to Clyde's 7th, SBC champs, and Clyde's 8th grade who shared the SBC title. The 7th grade team only one a couple games last year and 8th grade was around .500 last year. Very cool to see both teams progress with a lot of hard work in the off season and throughout the season.
