If you're starting freshman on your varsity team, you must be hurting for talent in the upper classes. IMHO, there's a big size/maturity difference between a 14 year old and a 17-18 year old. I grew 3" and gained 40 lbs. between my freshman and senior years. Don't put them on the same field. Not a good idea. Ask SMCC. Depends, TC has had 3 players that I can remember through the years who started as frosh, and 2 of those 3 started on TC's power teams. Ethan Kagy from 2005-2008...started on defense as a safety. He was a 4 year starter on defense and also eventually became one of their main RB's from 2006-2008. Jack Jacoby from approximately 2009-2012 (someone can help me out on the dates). Started at LB at first, eventually became TC's stud RB for several years as well as at LB. I can assure you that the teams those two started on as frosh were not hurting for talent, both were typical loaded, NOL Champion, playoff qualifying TC teams. Both Kagy and Jacoby were approximately 5' 10" 180-190 lbs or so as frosh, so they were plenty solid enough for varsity and playing against 17-18 years olds. Drake DeVore is currently a frosh starting at LB for TC. This kid size-wise is an absolute monster. He's just about 6' 0", and weighs in at around 230-240 lbs. He's VERY solid and strong. Now, he would not be starting as a true frosh for TC back during TC's run of being very good year in and year out, but that's not because he doesn't belong physically. He only had 3 years of football experience going into this season, so it's been a HUGE jump for him playing Varsity LB. Kagy and Jacoby as well as Jesse Hernandez all started varsity only after injuries to upper class men. Russell Yeast and Devore are the only 2 freshman I have seen start varsity from day one for TC in the last 15 years. And yes Devore strength and size wise holds his own very well!

I believe Jacoby was to be starting on defense, until he got hurt. Could be wrong, but I know his position coach really well, and he said he was starting.

Nope, he played mostly JV during the scrimmages and the first game or two. He did get a few varsity snaps at WR early on. That is one thing I found really odd is that he took every snap at practice as a WR and did not parctic at RB as a freshman at all, and didn't run the scout team at RB. Yet when he showed up for JV he was put at RB lol.

Had completely forgotten about Hernandez and Yeast, but in any event I'm not sure what you're saying means much towards the point I was discussing. Whether those kids started the season as the starter, or were the "next man up" (i.e. second string) doesn't matter IMHO, they were true frosh who were moved up to Varsity because of their ability much more than any lack of talent/depth at the Varsity level. I also have to disagree on Kagy...I know that situation very well as my son was 1 year of ahead of Ethan and playing his first year of JV. We knew Kagy would be moved up from the frosh team, but assumed it would be the JV squad, and welcomed that as he was such a good player. Then that first game against Whitmer, he either only played part time in the JV game, or not at all, because he had played Varsity action the night before.
