I was told no to your second question. So does that mean the entire group is stepping down? I have not seen it posted on the OHSAA site yet so maybe Pat Lewis or Kevin Calver have interest.

One of his assistants does have some varsity experience but I am going to say they go outside for this hire. Shelby is going to have a new football and boys basketball coach in the same year. I can’t imagine that happens all too often.

From what I’ve herd there going to not hire the best basketball coach they can ,there going to hire a teacher who has coached at some point in his life , than they will wonder while program don’t turn around . Freshmen coach applied, also I herd Pugh kids step dad applied if they was smart they would hire one of them , I’ve seen them both coach and they know what there doing !!!

The teachers contract probably stipulates that they hire within if they can.

The teachers contract probably stipulates that they hire within if they can. That is probably correct but many schools have hired from the outside if it is someone they would rather have. So it can be done and has been with success for some local schools.

Jason Rice? I knew he was coaching. I just didn’t know if he was a varsity assistant or another level?

Is this another example of an AAU coach thinking he can be a school team coach? Most of them struggle once they understand they have to use their own kids and actually develop their own talent.

Yes Shelby could have a really good team in league play next year, but I know for a fact that Pugh won’t stay at Shelby if they hire someone that’s not very good. Also I m hearing some of the other players could leave as well. Ad needs to take the time and get a good hire, not just a teacher.

I can understand griping if a coach is hired with no other relevant coaching experience, but I continually stand by the fact that Shelby isn't going to have the best chance of bringing in a quality coach. The town isn't wealthy enough and the prestige is not there.
Schwemley came into town from D4 Columbus Grove to D2 Shelby. That's a vertical move.
The new football coach, Mager, is coming from (football) D7 Mapleton to (football) D4 Shelby. That's a vertical move.
That's your best bet. Pick off a successful coach from a smaller program who wants to move their family to a bigger town. Pugh is not Brennan Armstrong, I'll put money on it that coaches aren't going to clamor to come here to catch lightning in a bottle. And if they do, then they'll stay for 3-5 years and leave, which is fine. We can run this charade in 5 years and wait for Balogh to come to his senses and go to Shelby.
This isn't a collegiate coach search, the budget doesn't call for one. If there is a teacher's contract with stipulations about finding a coaching hire from within, the school is going to follow it. I'd rather the school honor its teachers than alienate them.

They had a quality coach and griped about him so that doesn't help any. I think you are correct about it being the best chance from the outside being a current small school coach or possible someone who has taken a little time off that is ready to get back into coaching. I spit my coffee out on the Balogh comment. If he was going to make a change it would have happened a long time ago. This search will either end up being very local or from a place nobody has ever heard of. Nothing in between in my opinion.

My Balogh comment was made with a preponderance degree of tongue-in-cheek. Or not. Anybody can win 500 games at Ontario, 12.5% of coaches have done it there since 1960. Try it in a real town like Shelby. Who says no?
Shelby is the town that can weather any storm except a coach who doesn't exceed expectations.

It's to bad Shelby wasn't in the NCC for all those years if they had been the Whippets would be playing on Schwemley court.

Schwemley didn't coach at Shelby for 30+ years. Schwemley would NEVER coach at Shelby for 30+ years.
When Ontario was invited to join the NCC, Hall of Fame coach Rob Sheldon was winning everything. After Balogh arrived he only won 4 NCC Titles. Which led to his retirement.
Before the NCC, during the NCC and after the NCC Balogh has won 21 League Titles in total.
Balogh is 29-17 against Shelby and 13-5 against Schwemley

Madison really wanted him, but he would have had to be a teacher there. He was paid very well at Ontario and didn't teach a class. He's been responsible for Ontario's Work Study Program for kids who take classes half a day and work a job in the community the other half of the day.
