So many things to comment on. Balogh got a lot of wins in an league with inferior competition. Nobody can deny that, but everyone on here would happy if he was named the head coach at their school. He develops kids from the lower grades and uses the older kids to do it teaching them leadership. Schwemley was a B- coach at best IMO. I’ve already detailed my opinion on that. Shelby could do better, but statistically they can do a lot worse. I believe he underachieved this last year given the talent for whatever reason. Rice has some strengths. He’s smart. He knows the game. I think he’d give every kid the benefit of the doubt because I don’t believe he was given a fair look when he played. I watched him and played pick up with him. He was good enough to contribute and was never given the opportunity. He’s probably not experienced enough yet, but if given a few years to grow he’d get there. Anyone who thinks letting a player’s step dad coach is a good idea needs their head examined. There is nothing but trouble there. If you argue that point we have no common ground. We’ll likely never agree. I’ve watched a lot of high school basketball. I’ve watched in the area (mostly Shelby) for the last 20 years. I’ve seen two D1 players. One played for US then OSU and one for Norwalk then Georgia State. Two in 20 years. If I took the bet that Pugh wasn’t a D1 prospect statistically it would be a good bet. He’s a good player, but the two I mentioned clearly stood out among the others on the floor. I can’t say Pugh does. I’m not down on the kid. I just don’t think he’s Diebler or Thomas. I think Shelby has had a least one kid better who didn’t get a D1 offer (Conner Nelson). Bigger, stronger, better ball handler, better outside shot, better basketball IQ. Shelby isn’t a highly desirable position. The city has changed over 20 years. How? The economy, the housing bubble, and the town’s generosity caused this. The bubble caused a bunch of cheap houses to become available. Guys bought houses appraised for $70-90,000 for $40,000. They financed the full amount, put $10,000 in renovations, and are renting them out. The education is good. The rent is reasonable. If you can’t afford it Help Line will give your kid school clothes and a backpack. This changed the demographics of the town. I’m not passing judgment, I’m just saying it has changed who is walking the halls. Have to agree here. Pugh is a solid ball player, but he is not even close to the talent level as Diebler or Thomas. Even when those two had completed their sophomore years, they were better than Pugh. In fact if I remember correctly, Diebler led US to a state title his sophomore year

Yes Shelby could have a really good team in league play next year, but I know for a fact that Pugh won’t stay at Shelby if they hire someone that’s not very good. Also I m hearing some of the other players could leave as well. Ad needs to take the time and get a good hire, not just a teacher. I'd take the bet that "other players could leave as well." Nobody is moving from Shelby "if they hire someone that's not very good." How in the hell will they (YOU) KNOW if the coach isn't "good?" Or when? Please. Just. Stop.

Schwemley didn't coach at Shelby for 30+ years. Schwemley would NEVER coach at Shelby for 30+ years. When Ontario was invited to join the NCC, Hall of Fame coach Rob Sheldon was winning everything. After Balogh arrived he only won 4 NCC Titles. Which led to his retirement.
Before the NCC, during the NCC and after the NCC Balogh has won 21 League Titles in total. Balogh is 29-17 against Shelby and 13-5 against Schwemley Typical Willy Filly Ontario twist and spin and self (Ontario) promotion bullchit. IF he says it enough times though, at least HE will believe it. And to think, his numbers were LIES people. LIES I say.

Been reading all the posts and I have to reply. 1. Schwemley was 7-12 against Joe Balogh. (Still not good but better than 5-13 as was stated before) and 13-15 against Steve Gray. All you have to do is look at www.crawfordcountybasketball.com/ to find his records. So please before you start rattling off incorrect numbers, check your facts! All the kids that Schwemley has coached are Shelby born and raised kids. He didn’t have move ins from Mansfield or wherever to play other than this year with Pugh. So you have to give him some credit for that. 2. I feel for the next coach who is hired for the Shelby job as you’ll have to hear from all the parents who know it all but don’t know better than talk negatively about the coaches around town. 3. I thought and I may be wrong but didn’t Pugh go to Jr High at Buckeye Central? So that’s probably where it’s stated that he went to 3 schools. 4. Whipp53 mentions about Pugh’s step-dad wanting to coach. Pugh has a younger brother. Is step-dad a 2 years and done or is he gonna continue coaching the younger Pugh? I highly doubt it. Since step-dad was telling everyone during the Ontario game that if Schwemley was coaching next year they were moving.5. I laugh at how people think that college coaches just go to AAU games to watch so and so. I’ve seen plenty of college coaches at High School games, you just don’t see them. Maybe you shouldn’t be so wrapped up in your little bubble. 6. I’m willing to bet some cold pops that if Pugh’s step-dad doesn’t get the head job or is part of the coaching staff, they’ll move again. But I’d also like to see him get the job just to see if he’s really all he thinks he is. I told you folks that the stepper was a problem when this transfer was going down LAST Spring. He's just "that" way. I'd agree, if he isn't made "happy" he'll just pick up stakes and move elsewhere. He'll not be successful at Shelby unless he can recruit AAU talent to move there also, as coaching a PROGRAM is much different than coaching a hand picked "Daddyball" team.

Since step-dad was telling everyone during the Ontario game that if Schwemley was coaching next year they were moving. If he really said that, why did they move there? Quickly became disenfranchised, for whatever reason. There wasn't any problem PRIOR to the move to Shelby with Schwemley.

Se head coach left bc he knew Pugh was leaving, plus other parent drama. Also was starting a family. Most of post on hear are people who start assuming things , called drama. Pugh will stay at Shelby unless his dad takes coaching job somewhere else. Pugh came to Shelby to play against bigger and better schools to help him get better , against better competition . Pugh can’t help it his coach had other things going on in his life and quit coaching 1/4 way through the year. I Guarantee Pugh goes D1 , and your saying he’s not top recruit in the state? He’s actually ranked as a top 10 kid in 2021 class. Hs stats avg 17 a game and 8.5 rebounds. I believe his dad said in aau against (better competition ) he’s avg over 20 pts and over 10 rebounds . Most of you just sit around and try to rain on student athletes parades, instead of being supportive of kids working hard for there dreams . Some on here actually think about what they say and have legit facts before spouting off. #Knowyourfacts# Hilarious. And delusional. And needing some time with an English teacher. Aicholtz didn't leave BECAUSE of Pugh's impending departure. But he sure as hell wasn't going to stay IF Pugh (more to the point the Step Dad, not so much the child) was going to stay around and NOT transfer. The "parent drama" should be amended to add "step parent" also. You know, the guy who was on staff and got it to it with another staffer (the Freshman Coach, who also had a son on the Varsity), during a game. And then yelled in to the stands (from the bench) at the point guard's Dad during a game. Unless I'm mistaken, Aicholtz HAS a couple of kids, so he's not "starting a family" either. Marginal D1 prospect. No "guarantee" at least not from me. I do wish the kid luck in reaching his dream...if that's really HIS dream.

I think heart would have negated that. He COULD have been a small D1 player.

Ricky Minard, leading scorer in the Ohio Valley Conference when he was a senior. Played 5 years for the Sacremento Kings.
Keon Johnson and he was 5-7, maybe. Big South Conference player of the year when he was a Senior In 2017. Leading scorer in Winthrop's DI history
BTW, Balogh won League Titles 3 off the 4 years Ontario was in the big boy NOL, finishing 2nd the 4th year.

I didn’t say he didn’t win in another conference. I did say he got a significant number of wins in a weaker conference. That doesn’t diminish what he has accomplished. It does help frame what he has accomplished. My comment was clearly complimentary. Thanks for the info on the other scholarship basketball players. With knight’s 3.5 and those two we’re up to 7.5 (Haraway being the 0.5) in the last 20 ish. Playing D1 college basketball is a very narrow funnel.

Wow fanofthegame, D1 players from Sr. High in last apprx. 20 years. Ricky Minard- Morehead State Antonio Graves- Pitt Rasheed Reed- Illinois State Keon Johnson- Winthrop Jon Avery- IUPUI Yima Chia-Kur- Arkansas State Robert Jones-Idaho State Tj Lindsay- Southern Illinois State. Just over your time frame Marquis Sykes- Morehead State Dapries Owens- Nebraska Sean Tucker- Oho State Note he only lasted about 1 1/2 years there. Most of the guys all had good careers at those schools as well..I didnt include a few others like Lance Hood Mcneese State due to injury. Thats not to mention several guys like Herman Davis,Mel Sutton etc. who had d1 talent but came with alot of baggage. That talent pool has dwindled rapidly in the last several years due to many reaasons but fanofthegame thanks for letting me recall some of those guys.

Totally agree with fanofthegame on this one in regards to a Dad coaching their son at this level. I know this post is about a Shelby coach, but I’ve seen it over the years with several other area coaches. Better players on the team have to take a back seat to the coaches kid. Not a good situation for anyone involved. For this reason alone I would like to see Rice get the chance. Yes he lacks the experience coaching at this level. But I’ve been around and played enough ball with him over the years to know he wouldn’t play favorites and would expect the best out of the talent he would be handed. And if he could instill his own on-court work ethic into his players, there wouldn’t be too many teams who would out-hustle them.

Really surprised Conner Nelson's name hasn't been thrown out there. Shelby grad, Varsity asst at Plymouth last year. Young but he knows bball. I think Dave Hirschy was only 22 23 when he became head at Plymouth back in 85 86 or so and he's become one of the smartest bball coaches in the area. Give Conner the opportunity and you might have a 15-20 year run.

Good coaches are harder on sons than on the other players, just so there isn't a scintilla of evidence for parents to point at.

I think we all agree there is a notable difference between a father who has coached at a position for many years before his son comes through the system and a father who coaches for his son by being hired into the position in the kid's junior year. Dieblers, Falknors, Christies, and Baloghs all fall into the former category. The latter is what we are seeing with this talk on here with the Shelby coaching situation.

I did something that nobody does these days: actual research. I am going to aggressively, explicitly, and LOUDLY state that I am not trying to damage Pugh's reputation or trash the kid. From highlights I've seen, he is a player that I think any team in this area would happily accept into their program. He is also just a sophomore, so who knows what kind of leap he can make by virtue of work ethic and simply growing older. If all goes well for the Shelby program, I am excited to see him and others help Shelby succeed going forward. Whipp53, on the other hand, I have no problem questioning you. There is apparent bias in your posts, and it makes us weary to pick up what you are putting down. Here is Triple Double Prospects rankings for TJ Pugh's senior year class, the class of 2021: tripledoubleprospects.com/2021-player-rankings/There is no mention of Pugh in that list. If I search the website for any sign of Shelby's Pugh, I see no mention of Pugh. Your first source seems bonk. Prep Hoops requires a subscription in order to view rankings. I am not going to make that dive. I don't see a compelling need to do so.

Well I haven't looked at this wonderful site for awhile because I get tired of reading dumb posts!!! And I am sure someone will say that I am one of them stupid people, but here goes!! I believe if you look at Shelbys basketball coach's records, Schwemley has the highest winning % of any and 2nd longest time as head coach, not bad in my opinion!! The best thing for Shelby would be the transfer move on to another school, also he could take a class mate and their parents along with him!!! YES I SAID STUPID PARENTS !!! Shelby, you lost a good coach and good look finding someone to put up with the idiot parents!!!
