Got a phone call today that said St. Mary's may cancel and will decide by this Friday. Did anyone hear this? Heard they have 19 out and don't think they can survive the season.

Their week 1 is St. Paul, and the coaches over there haven’t officially said anything to the players yet. My son talked to one of SMCC’s coaches a couple of weeks ago and he basically said that they are having trouble putting together a squad. I know a couple of their better athletes didn’t go out this year. Bad situation overall, maybe they can play 8 man ball this season.

Toledo Christian's opponents and SMCC's may end up playing each other after this Unless you’re SJCC, who are scheduled to play both.

Any word? SMCC said they would decide today, Friday. Just heard from a SMCC parent, looks like they are going to go ahead with only 17 kids. Wow. But another source says they will make a final decision next week some time.

I hope for SMCC and the SBC that they field a team this year. I know they have many of Huron's formers coaches on their staff and judging by the box scores, played a number of teams tough in 2018.

I hope they have a team also, but one that can make it all season. Making a final decision in another week isn't fair to the SBC teams, they need to fine teams now.

What a damn shame it came to this for SMCC. I loved going over to strobel and catching a game on Saturday nights every now and then. I guess my question is how do you go from having 24 returning players plus incoming freshman to not being able to field a team?
Another question is if this move free’s their players to transfer to another school. One would think no because SMCC is now playing 8 man ball but 8 man ball isn’t OHSAA sanctioned...

They must have told their opponents last week, because St. Paul had a new team slated for week 1 last Monday.

Newark Catholic is now playing Edon at a neutral site.
It's a shame SMCC has canceled, but the timing is really bad waiting this long. Opponents could have played Toledo Christian's schedule, but now most of those teams have opponents (like Calvert could have played Northwood week 8, instead Northwood is playing a much larger Columbus Whetstone, who won't bring anyone.)

Cuyahoga Heights is supposedly still open, so I'd think that would be a fairly easy match-up to make happen for St. Paul. I'm not sure why NC went the Edon route instead of CH or NSP. It was travel for someone either way you look at it and either of those two schools would probably be a much better match up.

I would have loved a matchup against the legendary Green Wave.

I would have loved a matchup against the legendary Green Wave. The green wave has been more of an alge puddle the past 2 years, but every school goes through down years. JL is on it no doubt, St. Paul should have a week one with him working on it.

What also sucks is that when they do try to bring back 11 man football, who will want to enter into a contract with them? The opposing schools certainly do not want to lose a home game. The schools that had SMCC, or any of these schools that dropped will suffer a financial loss. I imagine there is some sort of financial commitment in the contract, but it will not be anywhere close to what the schools will lose, financially.

Fremont SJCC had Toledo Christian and SMCC on their schedule. I heard that Hilltop took Toledo Christian's place on the SJCC schedule.

Holgate without a team is really going to mess up that 8 school conference that have few nearby options to play against. Holgate's former opponents will probably jump to TC's former opponents because of proximity and leave SMCC's without a northwest ohio school to schedule

It sounds like they may not be the only one's in the River who will be out of 11-man this fall.
