Holgate without a team is really going to mess up that 8 school conference that have few nearby options to play against. Holgate's former opponents will probably jump to TC's former opponents because of proximity and leave SMCC's without a northwest ohio school to schedule SMCC is in an eight team league (division) as well. It sounds like they may not be the only one's in the River who will be out of 11-man this fall. Who else in the River is going 8-man this fall? SJCC and Danbury are both planning to play a full season.

SJCC and Danbury are both planning to play a full season. SJCC at 41 boys isn’t going to be to far behind SMCC even if it’s not this year. I expect Danbury, SJCC and Calvert to be playing 8 man in the near future. I believe we are also approaching the minimum number of schools needed for the OHSAA to sanction the sport into its own division.

Heck Monroeville is another that is not far behind, they canceled their JV schedule today. There are a few Firelands Conference teams who are not far behind sadly... I'm curious to see how many actually have JV teams this season.

St. Paul is another school with only around 40 kids, 39 to be exact but don’t quote me on that. 8 man will be the norm at most small schools in another 5-10 years. Sad

Could this spark a wave of league changes for football in the future?

Are you hinting that they changed their mind. If they turn around and now say their having a team that will make several teams upset because some already found teams to play. Plus how said after two/three games they don't cancel then. Just play 8 man for a year and see.

Any SMCC kids thinking of transferring to another school to play? And could they play this year if they did?

Any SMCC kids thinking of transferring to another school to play? And could they play this year if they did? No, because football is still being offered, therefore they would still sit if they transferred. If they said the age cancelling or getting rid of it would allow students to transfer without sitting. It’s all about the wording.

I'm not sure 17 is safe for a full-season of 8-man.

So, here is a question, could the SBC create an 8-man football division and them recombine the rest? What might that look like? This is interesting to me. 8-man is also interesting to me. I have never watched an 8-man football game before.

I know it’s too late for this year but any chance Willard gets back in the River in 2020?

I think Willard to the River could be a legit thing but that leaves the Bay at 5 schools which means a Lake school would need to move down if another team (Fremont?) was added to the Lake. That would make it 6-6-8. There are not any Bay-sized schools out there. The Bay will have to be filled from the River or Lake or the SBC could move to a two-division football conference.
Will be interesting discussions, especially considering SMCC isn't likely the last River school to move to 8-man.

Opponents of SMCC might be getting a break here in a couple hours... Can you elaborate? I hate to leave you all hanging, but I was told last night that a school was announcing at Noon that it was moving down to 8-man football. I then asked a coach of a school that has said school on his schedule and he said that the coach of said school said today in a pre-season meeting that they were committed to 11-man football with just 22 players. The original message last night came from a SBC school that was contacted by a school that was playing said school and was told they were moving to 8-man football today.

It’s all about the wording. It’s also about how one interprets the wording. The ohsaa sanctions 11 man football but SMCC canceled 11 man and moved to unsanctioned 8 man football. Technically unsanctioned sports don’t exist thus the case can be strongly made that SMCC cancelled football and their players if they choose are free to transfer. I’ll be interested to watch this play out for sure.

Meanwhile, St. Paul has picked up Northgate High School out of Pittsburgh in Week No. 1. The game will be at Whitney Field.

So basically what you’re saying without saying it is that Cuyahoga Heights refused to face St Paul week one. Hopefully they can find somebody easier like Newark 😂Let’s hope this one sticks.

Semantics maybe, but I think there's a difference.

Judging from the roster on maxpreps the kids will be fairly evenly matched size wise. They have about 50 kids on their roster and are a Class A in Pennsylvania.
