Sandusky didn't waste any time trying to scoop up a player or two from SMCC. Rather pathetic ploy IMO. Oh yeah, you mean the billboards throughout Sandusky or the postcards that went to every house in Sandusky to recruit them. Give me a break, the fault is on st. Mary’s here. In all reality, lots of st. Mary’s kids kids live in Perkins and Huron so it could benefit them. St Mary’s is trying to take advantage of the voucher program to bring kids to Sf. Mary’s, I don’t blame them, but I have heard it has brought about a different culture that high supportive (donors and people who are financially supportive) have not liked. They say football will be back next year but how can you trust that some of the players don’t back out like this year. It will be interesting next year but whatever parents choose is their right. I guess my question would be...what kids do they have that would benefit sandusky's program...remember its Division 7, used to playing a Division 7 schedule.. If i was a kid on their team, and i only was playing football because it was fun..i'd stay and play 8 man.. if it meant more to me than just having fun..i'd book.... but no disrespect to the panther players,, but im not sure i recall any of them that would be a above a jv player for sandusky..so i dont get this twitter advertisement..

Think St. Wendelin, who had once one of the top three elementary schools enrollment-wise in the Toledo Diocese, forced to close its doors on its schools completely. Once you go down the 8-man road there's no turning back, even if the school administration thinks so. A decade, maybe a little more, and many of the small privates won't be able to sustain themselves. Declining enrollment, less financial support from shrinking parishes, buildings showing their age, and they are one big expense, like replacing a roof or HVAC system away from closing their doors. The band-aids used to keep these buildings together won's last forever. It's like an airplane in a death spiral and there's no way to level out the plane before it crashes.

Playing eight-man football didn't lead to St. Wendelin eventually closing. Declining student enrollment led to St. Wendelin playing eight-man football and eventually closing.

Wouldn’t shock me someday to see a combined St.Mary and St.Paul catholic school district complete with available bussing happen.

St. Wendelin's problems came from 1) fewer families sending kids to the school, due in large part to factories closing or leaving Fostoria; 2) families with kids in the school had fewer kids to enroll compared to years ago (think two or three instead of five to eight); and 3) Findlay St. Michael officials telling families in Findlay NOT to send their kids to St. Wendelin after eighth grade.

Just the appetizer before the final meal that 11 man football is gone. It truly sucks but they thought they would have enough this year. If I were a freshman I would have played somewhere else.

A Register article back on Aug 3rd listed this as SMCC's 8-man schedule. Anyone know if this is still in place, or what the status of the two tentative games against Urban Meyer's alma mater are?

If they can’t play 11-man they need to either be shown the door or at least be shunned for good for football. They pushed to be scheduled for this year and got it. They screwed up past expansion. When is enough, enough?

I don’t understand why they just don’t suck it up and cut football. They can’t field teams and cancel on opponents. Even 8 man football isn’t a good idea with the travel they have to do and gas prices going up. I never understood why they just don’t become a basketball, wrestling and track school and forget about football.

They should have never attempted 11-man again so quick and the league shouldn’t have been so eager to let them back at it.

This kind of waffling only adds to some of the chaos in the SBC Someone even suggested 5 team football leagues in the upper divisions. It's a joke. Although, maybe it's too big to fail haha

There are more problems at SMCC than just football! They shouldn’t even be thinking about going back to 11 man. And the SBC shouldn’t even have considered letting them schedule games with other river league schools. If it made it that far for them to schedule it should be sorry about your luck you play or you don’t have football. Shouldn’t be no going back to 8 man. Toby Hammond has already told the kids he doesn’t want to coach 8 man football. Anyway as for other sports the girls basketball coach resigned this year, rumor has it at both schools he will be helping the Polar Bears since he already teaches there. The volleyball coach resigned after 3 years the school pushed her out and never once supported her. She only could do what the school wanted her to and have who the school wanted her to have help. She has years of coaching at other schools and years of coaching club volleyball at Northshore and Black Swamp. According to my daughter this year Volleyball will only have 15 girls 9-12. And next year 13 girls 9-12. With no other coach applying for the job. The job will be basically a volunteered coaching position. The student population has been going down over the years. Panther Connect said population has increased with 95 new student, what they fail to say is most of that is preschool! As for my kids they will be going back to our home school to finish out their schooling and athletics. The school is not what it use to be when my husband and I went there. Sorry about the rant and the misspelled words was just trying to hurry and post this.

SMCC used to be a power house! good across the board in all sports... they actually are the last team to beat huron in a volleyball sectional.. Its hard to coach there, kids coming from all different directions, can hardly have an open gym.. and basically they're going there for choice of a catholic education . It probably was never like that years ago when wrestling football and basketball were king.. but now it is..and its kinda sad.. because it used to be super exciting to play them...

Per a press release, Sandusky SMCC makes it official - they will return to 8-man football this fall. "Sandusky Central Catholic School president, Geoff Palmer announced St. Mary Central Catholic High School will be continuing its participation in 8-man varsity football for the upcoming 2021 season.
“After much deliberation, discussion, and prayer, we are excited to announce our student-athletes will be participating in 8-man varsity football for the upcoming season. With the challenges of smaller class sizes and fewer than expected student-athletes committing to the sport, for the safety and sustainability of the program, the decision was made to continue as an 8-man football team,” Palmer explained.
Palmer continued, “It was our initial thought and plan to be able to return to an 11-man team for the Fall of 2021, and planning had been done to complete this. Unfortunately, as we moved through the past month or so, the overall number of players was lower than expected and has resulted in the decision to remain as an 8-man team. We are charged with offering our student-athletes the best athletic program, and opportunities for the school community. While some may be disappointed in this decision, for the health and safety of our students, this is the correct course for the near future, to guarantee sustainability and continuity of our program.
Our coaching staff is currently conducting practices and workouts with our players preparing them for a successful 8-man football season. We will work with our SBC partner schools who had previously scheduled 11-man games against SMCC to help fill the void left by our decision. Additionally, SMCC will be contacting the Northern 8 Conference as we work to complete a full schedule for 8-man football for the upcoming season.
Overall, SMCC offers 18 varsity sports for our boy and girls to participate in. SMCC will remain an active participating member in the Sandusky Bay Conference for all sports, except football."

And what is SMCC doing to help fellow SBC members find new opponents? I’ve got an idea, pay the travel cost and extra expenses associated with long travel and lower attendance on Saturday games for traditional Friday night schools. If they pay $$ maybe they stop the fantasy 11 man plan in the future - those days have passed.

It’s on all involved - SMCC, SBC as a league, individual member schools. They might as well banish SMCC to non football status and add Northwood or something.

Why does SMCC keep doing this? To me it’s disrespectful to have other schools make their schedules with them in it then back out and everyone is scrambling again. Either go strictly 8 man football or have none at all. This is why I think the River needs to break off on their own and create an 8 team league without SMCC.

Honestly, I'm not sure why they thought they would go back to 11-man football. Once you make the switch to the 8-man game it's hard to go back. I'm not knocking the decision because it appears it's the right choice long term for SMCC, but I guess they were overly optimistic about going back to 11-man football.
I think you'll see a substantial number of schools around northwest Ohio make the transition to 8-man. Not all at once, but it'll happen.

In practical terms I agree with those who feel that the SBC should hold SMCC accountable, causing member schools to scramble to find a game coming off of a pandemic season isn't a good look. Whether SMCC has the money to cover lost gate is questionable. Some of the very best years the SBC ever had were when St. Mary had good teams since the close proximity of them to Huron, Perkins, and Margaretta made for some bitter rivalries. Perhaps there was some latitude offered in hopes that they could make a go of it in memory of those days.
