According to the Toledo Blade, Danbury will be joining Holgate, Toledo Christian and Stryker to start an 8-man football league in 2020. SMCC will not commit to meeting. This leaves an obvious void in the River.

Danbury has been playing 8 man ball in junior high for a little while now. Not surprised SMCC isn’t committing to it right now. It’s a hard sell to a prospective family why their kid should play 8 man when they can go to Perkins, Sandusky, Huron or Margaretta and play 11 man for free.

Stryker brings back football just to go 8man? Odd but understandable.
With Danbury and possibly SMCC out, that would leave an even number of schools. It would also make all divisions of the conference have a 5 game league season.

Let the scheduling nightmare begin for the River now as well unless they work something out with the TAAC.

SMCC will have to go to 8-man IMO. They can't hold 11-man teams hostage.

I guess I understand the apprehension of SMCC to commit to 8 man because they could lose even more players to public 11 man teams. That being said, it is ludicrous to think the 10 schools on their schedule next season should be expected to honor their contract if approached by another team about playing that week. SMCC did not make an official decision until the end of July this year which made for a scheduling nightmare for everyone still trying to get in 10 games. St. Paul had a team drive over 3 hours from Pittsburgh to play. Monroeville had a team drive over 4 hours from Portsmouth. I know St. Paul is no longer contracted for next year but whoever is scheduled to replace them will be affected. The days of "wishful and hopeful" thinking about 11 man football need to end. At this point, they are barely competing in 8 man games losing 64-19 to Bishop Rosecrans (I understand this is still a talented and perennial playoff team in 11 man until this year), 64-47 to Toledo Christian, and 50-13 to Holgate. If things are this bad in 8 man (outside of the Toledo Christian game), how do they expect to compete against 11 man teams in the future?

It would also make all divisions of the conference have a 5 game league season. Unless the league re-tools into two 9-school divisions. But something tells me Vermilion, Port Clinton, and maybe Huron would get gripey about having to play all of the existing Lake schools though. Doubt Willard, Edison, and OH would gripe about playing what's left of the existing River. Alternatives: Reach out or FC or TAAC (ick) for merger talks. Find other teams to bring in... Even though everyone else out there seems like a long shot at best. SBC could form an 8-man division... The Trickle.

The new 8man league is going to gain a decent amount of schools this upcoming year and explode in 2 years. D7 will cease to exist and instead be replaced with an 8man division.

I expect an influx of SMCC football players into other local 11 man football schools in the area. Travel expenses alone would seem to me a deterrent to 8 man football at a small school.

I hate being a downer but Willard should petition the Firelands Conference to boot St Paul and let Willard join because that's the only chance Willard has of ever being competitive in Conference play again.

It could be an anomaly, but Willard wasn't so competitive against South Central nor Plymouth this season.

In all honesty Danbury should cancel football and if the players want to play football travel go to PC .. That would make a lot of sense too..

When you look at the numbers at the varsity and middle school level, I predict there will be many teams playing 8 man in five years. There are a significant number of schools that have less than 25 players from freshmen through seniors. If that is the case, then I would say that 11 man football is going to be a challenge. The sad thing is that some of these schools have been playing football for a long time, with success.

Why has Ohio decided on 8man and not 7 or 6 man?

Just my own opinion, but if you want to play FOOTBALL, go to a school that has a FOOTBALL team.....not some morphed version of the sport that really isn't FOOTBALL. If your school cannot get enough players to play the game the way it's intended, then just don't have a football team, because, apparently, there's not that much interest by most of the students attending your school. Again, just my own opinion.

Ohio is losing football players at a higher rate than any other state but one per a Sports Illustrated article from a few months ago.

Just watched a little bit of the SMCC game on BCSN network.............I guess the players enjoy it, but...... On a side note....Does SMCC have a girl on their team? Watching the game, and standing on the sidelines with a helmet on, but #22 sure has a nice, long blonde, ponytail.

Why has Ohio decided on 8man and not 7 or 6 man? The National Federation rules for 11, 9, and 8 man football are all pretty much the same. The only differences are how big the field is, what yard line you kick off from, stuff like that. There are no National Federation rules for 7 man. 6 man is a different game with everyone being eligible (which means there is no position for big, slow kids with bad hands i.e., offensive linemen) and would require a lot of learning by coaches and officials.

This leaves an obvious void in the River. Invite Fostoria, they might be bigger division and school wise but pretty equal to most teams in football now a days sadly

I'm not sure that's a consolation. Fostoria used to compete against Whitmer, Ross, Findlay, Warren Harding, Boardman, SJJ, St. Francis, Hoover, etc and did well.

...and SMCC says they plan to get back to 11-man next year.
Could be another crazy year of scheduling for the River in 2020. Would be nice if SMCC and Danbury got together, figured out their situation, and then decided to either both stay 11-man or both go to 8-man. Otherwise the other River schools could have another year of having to find replacement games at almost the last minute, but for potentially two games.
Would suck if Calvert had to play the same opponent they have this week again next year.

So that's SMCC's plan, hope? Come on. They are getting obliterated in 8-man this year and lose a bunch of seniors. Their AD should know how hard it is to schedule. This is where the league commissioner has to step in and set a hard line in the sand. I'm sure Calvert is thrilled to be sitting home this weekend. Had SMCC made a decision even a week earlier they could have had a somewhat local game.
At least Danbury is being somewhat realistic. They haven't been competitive at all and need to do this 8-man thing. If SMCC and Danbury would both go the rest of the River could do a scheduling agreement with the TAAC for weeks 4/5.

For the records, there isn't a league commissioner (he's the secretary) and if there were, that's not the roll of that position. It is not a position of authority.

The Defiance Radio twitter account said tonight Danbury has joined the 8-man league.
BREAKING: @crescentsports reports that Holgate's school board has approved a move to the Northern 8 football conference from 2020-2023, committing the Tigers to 8-man football. Toledo Christian, Danbury, and Stryker are also confirmed for the league.
