I have been somewhat disappointed in Holtmann's recruiting success at OSU. Coming in, I expected him to recruit at a high level and take the program to a new level, but that hasn't happened. Seem's that expectations are to simply be competitive or acceptably good. Unlike Urban and Ryan's strong presence in football, don't see the OSU brand, among the schools competing for talent here at IMG. This graduating class saw Duke walk off with 4* 6-9 SF Jalen Johnson and 4* 7-1 C Mark Williams, while Tennessee plucked 5* 6-5 G Jaden Springer and Ole Miss acquired 4* 6-4 SG Mathew Murrell. 5* 6-10 F and Sr. to be Brandon Hatfield is committed to Kentucky. That still leaves 5* 6-10 PF Moussa Diabate still uncommitted in the coming sr. class. In that class, Purdue snatched up 5* 7-3 C Zach Edey and Florid has a commitment from 4* 6-10 PF Lynn Kidd. This place is a one stop, shopping venue for great talent and I don't see the attempt to get in the loop like Urban and Ryan have done so successfully.

I think it’s tough to compare Ohio State football to basketball. Football is considered one of the elites in college football along with Alabama and Clemson and a few others. It’s a little easier to get the very elite players, especially when they are constantly producing NFL draft picks and first round picks. In basketball those elite programs are Kentucky, Duke, Kansas. I think Ohio State is just one notch below them. But in basketball it’s a little different too where the teams with more seasoned players usually do better. With all the talent the Dukes and Kentucky’s are getting, are they winning the title every year? No, it’s normally the teams with more 3-4 year players and veteran teams. Holtmann recently talked about that and saying how he wants “older” teams. The two players he has coming in this year are both 4* players so it’s not like he’s getting scrubs.

the model for OSU basketball is not UK or UNC, it's MSU...heavy upperclassmen teams with a few talented kids

Butler was not filled with 4* and 5* recruits when Holtmann was there. If you are comparing to Duke, Holtmann has had more success at OSU in his first 3 seasons then Coach K did at Duke in his first 3.

Thanks for the comments guys! All, very good and valid points. Its easy to forget the nature of the college game today. There are the elite few, that continually load and reload with one and done players and then there is everyone else, that must depend on a different approach to recruiting and development. That, I now understand. Still a big supporter of coach Holtmann, but need to be a bit more patient (and understanding).

Ohio State currently has the #2 ranked recruiting class for 2021 with the addition of Malaki Branham today, the top player in Ohio and a top 30 player nationally. They also have Meechie Johnson and Kalen Etzler committed, two of the other top Ohio guys and nationally ranked.
Hopefully none end up transferring though eventually.

I found it interesting that Dru Joyce said that Branham will need 2 or 3 years of development before he makes a significant contribution. Watching his highlight video from last year, he has NO left hand. EVERY drive to the left side of the basket he always used his right hand, even when defended. I know HS coaches who have their 7th grade coaches and up run drill after drill after drill making kids use their off hand. A failure of AAU summer ball.
As a Soph, before his ACL, Meechie was 5-11. I see that now, after not playing his Junior year, he's 6-3. If anyone in the country improves to a 5 Star, if they play this year, it will be Meechie.

Not a lot of hoops news lately but something interesting that happened today was Meechie Johnson reclassifying and will join Ohio State this season but it won’t affect his eligibility. With the NCAA granting an extra year, Meechie could technically play 5 seasons with the Buckeyes. This will be huge for next season after Walker graduates.

Did I hear correctly that Coach Holtmann tested positive but then retested and found out he was another stat of a false positive? How many people would just accept the first test and make all their decisions on bad data. Imagine if this happens to a school age kid and 20+ of their friends get hit with quarantine.

Yeah I read that about Holtmann too. That definitely seems to happen a lot across the country. And I’m willing to bet that first positive he had was still counted in Ohio as a case and when it was found to be a false positive, never taken off the case list.
As for OSU news, they picked up a commitment from Roddy Gayle from New York, a top 75 player nationally. Nice addition.

Ohio State with a big commitment today from 5* Bruce Thornton from Georgia. He’s the #27 overall player in the 2022 class. Nice couple of days for the basketball team.
OSU currently has the #1 ranked football and basketball classes for 2022.

OSU hoops once again recruiting like John Cooper, but I have more faith in this coaching staff in March than I did Thad so I’m feeling pretty good they won’t coach like Coop.

I enjoyed watching Dane Goodwin trash talk Buckeye players during the game and then walk off the court with a loss. The kid was whining at every whistle. Ahrens and Jallow were good tonight off the bench.

Nice road win. Love the scoring balance.
Bucks playing with no Center essentially.

Ahrens and Jallow were good tonight off the bench. I noticed the same thing, he was getting on my nerves. Solid win last night, especially on a night when it seemed like ND couldn’t miss. Got down by 11 at one point and fought back. Great minutes by Jallow, wasn’t expecting that out of him.

Also what a game from Liddell. He’s a little undersized but plays much bigger. I’m looking forward to watching his development over the next few years.

It did surprise me that Jallow was getting Kyle Young minutes, But when Durham fouled out ND were smaller.

Yeah Ohio state was switching every screen so I’m sure they didn’t like Young switching onto their PG, Jallow is able to stay in front of him better(along with other guards).

I was glad to see Jallow was able to defend a much bigger guy. They have him listed at 6'5 but he looks to be a big 6'5 when standing next to Sueing.

I hope we can get something out of Meechie and Towns this year. With no big man we'll need more bodies to keep guys fresh. To get wins we'll need to out hustle and out defend our opponents.

It’ll be interesting to see how they use Meechie since they do have Sotos as the backup.
I guess Zed Key would technically be their big man, a somewhat undersized big man. He has been playing pretty well so far but didn’t get a lot of minutes against ND, just like Young.

Holtmann has said he's going to be very careful with Meechie, since he hasn't played in a real game for 2 years Looking out for his physical and mental well being. Bringing him along slow. Doing what's best for Meechie in the long haul. Key got beat REAL bad on the baseline once and he was out, never to return.

Yes Key didn’t look good against ND because of the switching, and neither did Young. But the previous 3 games Key played pretty well.

Buckeyes with a somewhat sloppy win, Cleveland State was very scrappy. Ohio state looked like they were trying to figure out how to play without Liddell, their leading scorer and rebounder. Zed Key with another nice game. He really plays well for a freshman.

FINALLY some truth about Liddell's mysterious illness on today's BTN broadcast. Mono...I understand HIPA, but after a couple of days of low life speculations on social media, it served him more to be open and truthful. Lesson learned in today's disease environment.

It was on Twitter earlier today that he had mono. I saw a quote from Holtmann that they think he’s over halfway through it(whatever that means) and said it could be another couple days or even another week or more.

I think Key can play well against "scrappy", remains to be seen if he can hang with the ND and Big Ten teams of the world....at this point in his career.
