If I had to guess it would be because there were originally 6 schools. Also probably a nod to the Iroquis League of Six Nations, whose western most group was the Senecas. Here is the league's timeline

I believe Findlay was Independent 95-96 school year before joining GLL.

The Iroquis league of six nations ? They would never get away having a conference name like that, In today's (ridiculous) society. Sounds kind of neat, To me.

Nicknames weren't necessarily an official thing for schools yet, but I remember coming across an article where each of the school's took on a nickname referencing a local native american tribe.

Calvert was the Senecas
Carey was the Cayugas (sometimes referenced as the warriors (little w) in yearbooks/articles)
Crestline was the Onondogas (later called the Railroaders and then the Bulldogs)
St. Paul was ? (also called Crimson & Greys and Saints)
St. Wendelin was the Mohawks
Upper Sandusky was the Oneidas (Upper's yearbook was also called the Indian Village)

League was named by student Ralph Seislove of Calvert in a league naming contest.

Process of elimination after I found Carey being referred to as the Cayaugas in a yearbook. St. Paul was likely referred to as the Tuscaroras.

Fostoria was also part of the Trolley League as early as 1919-20 school year. The Redmen won the 1919 Trolley League title in football.

This is not exactly in the same topic as this thread, but I am curious as to why Port Clinton did not join (or was not invited to join) the NOL when it formed in 1944, seeing that it had affiliation with Bellevue and Norwalk for many years in the LBL, and I believe was mentioned as one of Bellevue's main rivals during that time.

My guess would be the travel to Wyandot and Crawford County is pretty far. They must have been independent or league hopping for awhile until they breifly joined the SBC. By 1956 they were in the NLL which had schools like Lake, Genoa, Eastwood etc. during that time frame.

My dad played football at Upper in The League of Six Nations during that period. I always took the name to be a nod to the Native American heritage of the area.

Did some research on Crestline

They were independent from 1940-44

From 1954-61 they were a part of the Mohican League (Football Only) with Bellville, Frederickton, Loundonville and Millersburg.
