Good news there but on the other end Ohio Dept of Ed cancelled ALL in person graduation ceremonies for Ohio high schools. That apparently includes July and August make-up dates too according to some schools who made contingency plans. When did he say that? Apologies, meant to quote the post before yours.

Let’s see if the ODE’s idea holds up to what is sure to be immense public pressure to allow the ceremonies in person. However it was a nice attempt by the ODE to execute a Friday afternoon news dump. Almost got away with nobody noticing it.

Based on their control of school funding along with insurance companies I see no movement. Our school was informed early on that CDC guidelines and health dept directives shut their additional events down.

ODE doesn't have the authority to ban congregate ceremonies. That would have to come from the governor.

School superintendents throughout the state have announced they are canceling. I’m not sure on exact authority but it has changed plans for now where I know senior parents north of Columbus up to northern Ohio. My guess is that insurance companies will not cover large events after a governing body like ODE make such a statement. My guess....

My grandson High School just sent out emails Friday they that have moved to graduation to June 25 and have not came back out and cancelled. Plus I don't understand how ODE should cancel graduation two months early. Who really is 100% sure of the future. Its possible everything is good by June 1st. HOPEFULLY

The ODE can encourage but at the end of the day Mike Dewine is the ultimate decider. I’m under no illusion that the kids will get a traditional ceremony. They should be able to get a ceremony similar to how Air Force did theirs a few weeks ago imo. Sit the kids six feet from one another and give them the opportunity to walk the stage and get their diploma’s. Mom and dad can watch from home. Falcon is right about insurance concerns but I’d imagine a governors order permitting ceremonies would cover insurance concerns.

The Governor talked a lot, But didn't really say much, Today. I don't think we'll notice much of the so called reopening on Friday, or Monday. Where are 11 million people suppose to find masks by the 12th ? I think Dewine is a RINO.

Masks have been recommended in Ohio for several weeks now, as well as on a national basis. For those who have had to venture out, the responsible ones should have already gotten a bandana or cloth mask, at the least. For those who don't know where to get a mask, they have tutorials on Ohio.gov for how to make your own mask with basic materials you can find in your home. I linked the video below.

Maybe not ALL have cancelled but it’s happening Agree. Schools with alternate dates just haven't gotten to the point they soon will (or have the courage to admit it yet). Alternate dates were aspirational a couple weeks ago but are now pointless for many reasons but mostly because in July and August things will not be much different. No one will be permitted to host large events like graduation. I mean there is serious discussion about fall sports and the return to school in August likely being impacted.

Eric Wobser sandusky city planner said Sandusky is about to be hit like no other area community by a financial crisis. IF cedar point does not open until july they could see a 4 million dollar drop.IF cedar point does not open a 10.1 million dollar hit , ouch.80% of Sandusky's revenues come from the latter .Kids gotta work, help family and will impact numbers up there like football..

If I read you correct, you mean that Sandusky draws 80% of their city revenues from Cedar Point? Which would all be gone if Cedar Point doesn't open?

3.5 million visitors a year. Ticket price is $72. Not all pay $72. Lets say an average of $50. That's close to $2 billion, just to get in. Then a lot of extra money spent on food, extras and souvenirs. Some stay in area hotels and eat in restaurants that go for a multiple day trip. Cedar Point brings in $75,000/day in parking fees. I'm sure a lot of the 3.5 million buy gas to get home. 2200 full time employees, 45,000 seasonal employees that buy stuff in Sandusky. Construction crews that build new rides every year and maintenance crews. Stay in motels, eat in restaurants and shop in stores when there. Taxes, taxes and more taxes.
Who knows, but it's a MAJOR enterprise for a town of 24,000.

I believe it. I hadn't ever seen a number put to it. The Sandusky Register article hopefully has someone with more privy to the city financial statements who can say for sure. I'm sure Cedar Point has some disaster insurance policy, but that doesn't help things down at City Hall.

Their disaster insurance did not cover a pandemic. You are jarring my memory, because I now recall seeing that in the WSJ for many businesses. On the insurer's behalf, they would all go belly-up since I'm sure any pandemic-related clauses in there wouldn't have anticipated such widespread claims being sought. Cedar Point may have more financial clout than others, but not enough to start that precedent for the insurance companies.

Gonna be a another article tomorrow regarding perkins shortfalls. LOCAL GOVERNMENT, not the schools are directly affected by this. Indirectly they will be due to the fact how the government funds schools. Admission Tax and Bed Tax do NOT go to the schools.Reading comprehension is not in your vocabulary

The governor overruled the ODE today announcing that outdoor graduation ceremonies will be permitted. The schools have to figure out social distancing but for schools in our area that should be doable.

I have never been a supporter of his but in defense of all of our leaders, nobody had a clue how to deal with this. Now that we are months into dealing with this and we have data and stats to use, they have a better idea of how to handle it. Now the only problem for our leaders who are making decisions or statements that supporters and non-supporters can micro-criticize for anything that happens. The reality is this virus is nothing like what it was originally feared to be. Be healthy everyone and lets get back to high school sports as soon as we can.
