governor whitmer of michigan has ordered schools to be closed for the rest of the semester in this case school year.the schools are to have online classes so the students can finish the school year out and the seniors can graduate.i will expect ohio soon to follow as the peak will hit by mid may and stay at home thru end of april, but i believe it will be extended thru end of may. so i expect that oshaa pretty soon will have no choice but to cancel spring sports.things will not get better for a while so expect the cancellation of spring sports in ohio very soon.

I work at a charter school in Xichigan and we are officially closed. The governor’s office has recommended we be paid as we would be normally and although my wife and I work at a charter school, they have committed to pay us through the end of the school year. I can’t say it’s that way everywhere, but I think Gov. Whitmer feels that since she has closed the schools and student counts have already been done for funding, that this will help keep money moving in state and has requested the schools continue to pay employees. Since we are doubly invested in the school, I have to admit I’m glad. We are both admins (she is the special ed director and I am the transportation director) but they are paying employees across the board, including my bus drivers and bus aides. I’m not normally a Whitmer fan, but admittedly thankful in this case.
The MHSAA came out the next day and cancelled suspended winter sports and spring sports. The party is over.

B2B,
Any thoughts on why Michigan is getting hit harder by this virus than the other midwest states. And are you still hoping to return to Ohio someday?

I think it has to do with the timing and the belief by those in the Detroit area that they are above this thing and many have continued to do as they choose. Honestly, I’m in Monroe, between Detroit and Toledo. The three counties that make up the Detroit metro area have about 15,000 cases currently. Toledo has about 350. Monroe County only has 130. I would expect that we would be higher, except that once you go west of Monroe, we are predominantly rural county. Detroit, and the Detroit metro area, has over 4 million people in those three counties, hence I don’t think the numbers are really all that askew.
And as far as returning to Ohio, I wish... My wife and I both work at a school, and are totally ingrained in the community. We both have good positions with the school, and after this many years, I don’t see it happening. Two years ago we sold our house, and bought a new much larger home, situated on the River Raisin in Monroe and are hoping to eventually move my in-laws here. Both are suffering from health issues, and it would help our ability to assist them. So it looks like I will remain a displaced Buckeye... 😉

She’s locking us down even more. She has extended the at home to April 30th and taken businesses like Lowe’s down to essential services only... so buying project stuff like paint, or wood, or...or...or.... I had a dishwasher on hold there because I was trying to find an installer... The hell with that. I went and picked it up just to have it here. I might find someone or may just have to YouTube and install myself. Bottom line, is she is following the restrictions that Meijer and Walmart are already following, so she’s still late to the party. When she tries to get herself into a vice presidency position, run away.
Our roads here pretty much suck, and part of her big campaign promise to get elected was to “fix the damn roads.” However, she failed to tell her electors that she was going to increase the fuel tax by 45 cents a gallon. Unfortunately, the state has pulled this garbage before and not resolved the issue, so the entire state, Dems and Republicans we’re raising hell with her. She then started vetoing line items in her budget proposal (looked like she was trying to prove her power) and again everyone was up in arms. My wife thinks she’s doing a good job with the virus... I’m not so sure that anyone can have their job performance validated though in response to the pandemic. I’m on the fence about that one.

Unfortunately I don’t have a definitive stand regarding this virus... I’m not sure that it’s the superbug that is being claimed, however, I’m not sure any level of disbelief is worth the risk. I’m diabetic and in my 50’s, so should I throw caution to the wind?? I don’t think so, however, about a month back I had one hell of a bug come through my home? Corona?? I don’t know, but it kicked my backside and I missed the first work days for illness in over five years.
If I am in a position to make these decisions for the public, I don’t have a choice except to make people safe, although it’s political suicide. However, I do disagree with some of the choices being made, as much as closing specific departments in stores deemed essential. In Michigan, you can now go to Home Depot to get essential items (cleaning agents, things for emergency home repairs...) but not paint because that’s not essential. Lawn services are not considered essential, but some cities feel they are and are not ticketing because the lawns being cut will keep vermin down. I realize she is drawing lines... I just don’t know that I agree with the delivery. Some are really starting to try to use their own common sense to make decisions.
So you know, Michigan is currently at 22783 cases and 1281 have died.

Her explanation on the lawn crews is that someone has to fuel the vehicles and someone has to go to the job site, that it’s not essential. However, some cities are more concerned with the possibility of breeding mosquitoes or rats or any of your choice of vermin and have committed to not writing any tickets to those lawn crews that work.
She’s also issued an order for no one to travel from residence to residence. Many Michiganders have a cabin up north or property up north, and I know a few right now who are not working who have decided to go to their property up north and stay. The governor two weeks ago said this is a great idea ( I assume figuring it would help with this social distancing ) but now has issued an order that no one is allowed to travel from residence to residence.
I don’t really care, because I mow my own lawn, and I don’t have a cabin up north. She is getting a ton of pressure from above and below and you could hear it in her statements today, as she was getting snarky with the reporter about her “executive order” being just that... not a suggestion, but an order. It sounded like a mom scolding her kids... 😇

Is she paying overtime for State Troopers to check license plates? There are A LOT of people in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio who have a "cabin up north". Count me in that group. Every year about this time I go "up north" to open up our place on Lake Michigan. There are very few cases of C-virus in Richland Country. But I'm concerned about all the people escaping epicenters in Chicago and Detroit that I'll run into "up north".

I remember talking a little with you about it as well. I’m honestly not sure how she intends to manage it, but I would be willing to bet if you’re far enough north, they may ticket you. I’ve heard of groups being ticketed here for being together and not minding the 6’ rule, but this “no residence to residence travel” is new.
If you do decide to go, maybe wait until after April 30 to see if she lifts the ban???

In many jurisdictions they ticket offenders for disorderly conduct because there is no actual law preventing people from doing what they are doing. Governor's orders are not laws and there are many legal issues with ticketing/arresting people for government decrees which are often arbitrary and/or unconstitutional. Disorderly conduct is an officer's "go to" crime when they can't find a real one.

I have a hard time faulting any politician’s decision in the heat of the moment. As information develops I think we need to rethink decisions. Fact is we’ll never KNOW what were the right decisions or wrong decisions unless we go back and look at the game film. Reports of an increase in people dying of heart attacks at home because they are scared to go to the hospital, increases in domestic violence and children’s services calls, kids on free/reduced lunches that may not be eating are all just a few of the consequences of social isolation that when this is all done need to be factored into the analysis. That way we can better handle the next one (and there will be a next one). What I’m afraid is the majority of the sheep will turn their attention to the next shiny object and no one will hold politicians accountable for analysis and preparation for when this happens again. My confidence level after being on the front lines of this is zero.

Disorderly conduct is an officer's "go to" crime when they can't find a real one. I’m good with limiting interaction between people considering authorities believe that the COVID is so infectious and I want to assume that people can respect that as a general rule. I am trusting that those politicians and pandemic authorities wouldn’t steer their constituents the wrong way. However, to listen to Whitmer and her comment about her “order” pushed my “rebel without a cause” buttons. I also get my dander up that she leaves a store like Home Depot or Lowe’s open for those items she considers essential, but closes specific departments.. Here is a part of her order: For stores of more than 50,000 square feet: Limit the number of customers in the store at one time (excluding employees) to 4 people per 1,000 square feet of customer floor space. The amount of customer floor space must be calculated to exclude store areas that are closed under subprovision (2) of this subsection. Close areas of the store—by cordoning them off, placing signs in aisles, posting prominent signs, removing goods from shelves, or other appropriate means—that are dedicated to the following classes of goods: Carpet or flooring. Furniture. Garden centers and plant nurseries. Paint. If you are there for lumber?? It’s ok. If you are there to purchase tools? It’s ok. A new mower? It’s not garden center, so should be ok. And so on and so on. It seems to me that if you are allowing the store to be open, then the difference of adding those areas for shopping is minimal in the big picture. People are stuck so let them be productive if they choose.

Funny considering... LOL! I did read in her executive order specific traveling orders which are interesting... Individuals may also travel: To return to a home or place of residence from outside this state. To leave this state for a home or residence elsewhere. Between two residences in this state, through April 10, 2020. After that date, travel between two residences is not permitted. She gave them a day to come home from up north... 🙄

Not many because the Fake News Media won't cover it 24/7 like they did Kavanaugh. ......And......the real reason is Kavanaugh was a Reprublican Supreme Court nominee and Biden is a Democrat they want in office. The only way it will get attention is....if she has a damning, red dress hanging in her closet.....lol

Whitmer is on Biden's list for VP candidates. I saw this posted elsewhere as well. She is not a fan favorite so far and I have seen others claiming that she only ran for governor to get her name out there for the Democratic VP nomination. However, she won't get my vote. So far, she has simply followed DeWine's lead inasmuch as the COVID-19 and she doesn't exactly instill a sense of calm or in control in me. When the state reps and senate started to buck her 45 cent gas tax increase to fix the damn roads, her response was to line item veto stuff to make her point. She had an education increase for every district across the board, EXCEPT the charter schools. They were expected to do the same with less funding, and she did that on other issues as well, where she knee jerked with specific groups almost to make a point.
Not a fan.

She'd be better than Stacey Abrams, who's on the list, who still thinks she's the Governor of Georgia. AND who, in some circles, is better known for her soft porn writings.

Today, they were calling for 15,000 or so vehicles to descend on Lansing to oppose some of her policies and business closures. Looks like quite a few showed up, but not really what I expected to see. Whitmer acknowledges it in her afternoon briefing, but the reality is 28,000 cases with 1921 dead (official report just now) in a state of ten million. Just need to get past this initial wave , so that the next wave isn’t so difficult on the medical professionals as COVID 19 runs its natural course (unless there is some type of vaccine that is discovered in the meantime.)

Ohio's now famous Governor Dewine is taking neophyte Governor Whitmer under his wing, by including her in a coalition of mid-west Governors looking to start opening businesses by the first of May.

Read today that 50% of Ohio's covid-19 cases come from prisoners and staff at state prisons, health care workers and nursing homes. Half of all known cases are in prisons.
