I remember reading an article in the summer that Balogh was less than 20 games away from 600 wins. Anybody (my best guess is fillmore) know exactly how close he is at this point? Probably around 10?

It looks like he entered the season with 581, and is 7-2 now, giving him 588 right now.

Balogh currently has 595, with 3 games to play in the regular season. Two of them have been canceled due to the weather, Madison and Bellevue were to be played on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Galion is the only other game on the schedule. For a total of only 20 games played by Ontario this year. Madison's first tournament game isn't until next Saturday the 26th. Could that game be made up before Ontario's first tournament game on the 23 against Bellevue? Would Bellevue be interested in making up a non-league game with Ontario?
So, Galion and potential tournament games against Bellevue and Mansfield Senior are winnable games getting Joe to 598. Then a District Semi-final game against the winner of the Upper/Norwalk game looms. The upset loss to Pleasant and the OT loss to Ashland have put 600 in jeopardy. Each game that gets closer to 600 puts additional pressure on this team.
Regular season games canceled during this pandemic year can be made up after a team has lost in the tournament, as long as the tournament has not been completed.
I doubt Bellevue would be interested after the Tournament. Would Madison and Lex care to make up postponed/canceled games with Ontario? Would Lex consider a home and home series against HUGE rival Ontario? As Clear Fork was willing to do in football.
Joe has hinted this could be his last year and winning 600 was not a must on his coaching bucket list. But ending this season with 599??

I for one would be all for a home and home with Ontario. Win or lose Lex needs the work. The game action will benefit the team next year. Lex is very young playing 4 to 5 sophomores and a freshman. Balogh getting to 600 wins would be a great historic accomplishment.

This year Lex needs games against anyone to gain growth for their very young team. Ontario needs wins before their coach steps down. Ontario could call Crestline, Riverdale, Wynford or Buckeye Central. Those four schools make up almost 25% of those wins.

The OCC is a very strong league that challenges most of its teams every year.

It will be interesting to see who would want to do make-ups or schedule games after their tournament run. Also the window is very small since the schools have until March 13th to do games. But I could see Lex, Bellevue, and Madison all play after their run. Lex and Bellevue are young and would like to put in another game to work on stuff before the off season. If Balogh doesn't get his 600 he could come back for one more year to get the 600.

This coming from a guy that works for the school that scheduled Temple Christian, Lucas and Crestview for 3 of their 4 wins instead of rescheduling games with Ontario, Ottawa-Glandorf, Tiffin Columbian and Clear Fork??

It's hard to believe with all the snow on the ground, but workouts for spring sports start on Monday, Feb.22. Before scheduling any more basketball games after they are out of the tournament, I would think schools would take into account how many of their BB players are involved in spring sports. Available gym time may also be a factor, considering the weather.

Neither have I, probably for the reason I cited, but it was mentioned as a possibility by others.

The OHSAA allowed it in football and have done the same for basketball. Some schools chose to play extra games in football and some chose not to.

They graduated quite a bit but obviously this a great job to land. Wonder if there will be a lot of applicants?

For years he has said that he was going to retire when this class graduated and that 600 was never a goal.

I’m curious if Mr. Fillmore thinks the assistants leave with Joe. Or has he groomed one of them to step into this position. They have all been there a long time.

They graduated quite a bit but obviously this a great job to land. Wonder if there will be a lot of applicants? First of all, all other coaches in the system say they're also retiring. It will be someone from the outside. His JV coach has been with him for over 25 years and has over 400 wins. Thus only one teaching job will open up, Joe's. AND I've heard that one could be eliminated. So, the new head coach will have to get his assistants from outside the system with no teaching jobs for them at Ontario. Ontario graduates 7 Seniors. The new coach will have no starters returning and only 2 lettermen, the first 2 off the bench this year, a Senior and a Junior next year. The JV and Freshman teams, per usual had good records. And they still get 15 players on the 7th and 8th grade teams after making cuts. I would think the number of applicants should significant, as long as they don't mind following a legend and works his butt off like Joe has done to build it and maintain it. Any guesses?

Goodness what a legend. Never one to brag even a little. He would always deflect praise to his players and coaches. He could have easily announced this would be his last year or come back next year and gotten a farewell tour, but he never wanted it to be about him.
I know everyone sees this as a great landing spot and there is definitely a great developmental system, but starting the coaching staff from scratch, if true, would be really tough. I’d have to think they would want to find someone with at least some Ontario ties like an alumnus who understands the tradition. There’s only a couple alumni coaches I know of. Anyone want to bring Mark Rinehart back to Ohio?
But the tough part is replacing that stability. Any idea if there will be a handoff of sorts? Or if the new coach would start clean. I’d hate to see years of development into those camps, summer leagues, and joint open gyms just stop.

As I indicated about a month ago, this was in the works and not a end of season decision. That would be true for many of the varsity assisting staff who have their own teams. The 2021-2022 season will have a whole new look with many new faces from what I have been told.

They graduated quite a bit but obviously this a great job to land. Wonder if there will be a lot of applicants? If advertised well, every open position gets a lot of applicants. The question is how many will be qualified and able to do the job. I once had an AD tell me they had 57 applicants for a head coaching job. I thought that was great, but he said once they picked out the rec league coaches, junior high coaches and AAU coaches, they had less than 8 candidates to consider for an interview. With that said, this should be an attractive job.

Only the Freshman coach has his "own team". The correct information
