That’s a no brainer then. Good luck to him. The program is in a good place so that will help.

Greg will be a great coach for Shelby. He will be missed at Ashland. He is also an assistant football coach for Shelby.

If what I have been reading is true, good for Shelby to fire the coach for using racial and other discriminatory name calling insults. I always thought that kind of talk was encouraged in Shelby based off the number of complaints of said comments coming from the floor and stands at Shelby games. I’m glad to see times are starting to change in Shelby.

Back to the Ridgedales of the world. I wonder how much research Shelby did into his time at Ridgedale? I'm sure this personality defect didn't occur for the first time at Shelby.

Personality defect might be a bit strong. I’m sure you made some mistakes in your youth and said some things you shouldn’t have. That’s a mistake not a defect.

"Youth"? I'm quite sure Shelby didn't think they were were hiring a "youth". When I was 30 and held a management position for a major corporation I always thought before I spoke. I knew better at 30. Maybe Mr. Loney is just very immature. Immaturity at 30 is also a negative trait

Saying something once is a mistake, maybe twice it can be called a mistake. After that it's who you are and it shows you are not changing. I doubt Shelby fired him for saying something once or twice.

Sometimes saying something wrong has to have a negative repercussion to teach the lesson. We all have motivations. Dangle a carrot, hit with a stick. I don’t know the guy that well. I do know he’s young. I also saw him bring some positivity. I’ll choose to give him the benefit of the doubt until more evidence piles up. I certainly don’t want judged by my twenty something self. I hope I’ve matured. I hope I continue to.

I hope you have matured also from your twenty something. But at that age, had you been hired into a position of responsibility of mentoring kids and then acted irresponsibly by repeatedly insulting kids, you should have been fired.

It's amazing to me how much has changed in the punishment phase for coaches and teachers since I was in HS. I recall things my coaches/teachers said and did back then and we thought nothing of it because a lot was said and done in jest. Now they get cut loose in a NY minute. Meanwhile the kids get away with soooo much more it's crazy. The disrespect blows me away.

It is really amazing at how much has changed in everything since you were in HS. 40 years ago the world was not the same. But even 40 years ago the comments made by this person could have had the same result.

Kids and parents run most of the programs now, not coaches. If you are talented the coach will likely look the other way when you get out of line, not right, but it is so. When you come across a coach that won't tolerate this attitude I applaud them for setting the stage for respect and discipline. I have heard a few things about what happened and it comes down to whether the board wants to fight to retain the coach or burn them at the stake, they chose the latter. Shelby is the same as any other school, just look around and listen during football and basketball games at some of the comments people in the stands make towards the coaches and officials. Why do you think there is such a shortage of officials, they are sick of being abused. Loney was a good coach and did he say something that was out of line, sure did. But, you find me a coach these days that don't get frustrated and chirp and I'll say their program isn't a very successful one.

I can agree that in many ways there is a fine line between motivating a player and insulting a player. But if you are a frustrated coach and you "CHIRP" at your kids to get them to work harder, it is very different than insulting them in a personal attack.

Loney is now an assistant coach at Mansfield Senior. Nice move for their staff imo. Looks like he will wait a year for another HC opportunity
