Public schools are funded by government money, and when they start saying we strongly recommend you make a name change or face cut funding it will happen. That is the direction the government is going, and it’s not as far away as you think, like it or not. not a chance this happens in Ohio, especially with our current state legislators. Also, Ohio is becoming more red by the election, you don't have to worry about the state forcing name changes... it will be individual districts that do it. although, could the OHSAA prevent teams with these style nicknames from playing in the postseason, similar to what the NCAA did a while back? No chance the OHSAA does that, simply because the last thing they need now is a costly lawsuit that they’d lose.

It's 2021 and words like Redmen, Redskins, Indians are hate crimes and anyone that uses them should be prosecuted for a hate crime and sent to prison for a long, long time. White people only named teams the Redmen, etc because they thought Native's were animals. The real animals are white people, especially white people that like guns, the American flag, and Donald Trump. The USA is no place for bigots that voted for Drumpf. I see that a member on here thinks Bellevue should be called the Bellevue Whitemen. Wow, talk about a white supremacist. A bunch of white males taking the field as the Whitemen, what is that a Klan rally. Doesn't surprise me one bit as Trump voters are bigots and white supremacists and terrorists (Jan. 6). You only want to call them the Whitemen because you're a Klan member and hate Blacks, Asians and Natives. Whitemen is so divisive and makes no place for other races on a team called the Whitemen. Hey. Unless you want it back at you 10-fold (in this forum), I'd zip it !

I skipped every post in here. I'm sure I missed a lot.
Anderson High School (in Cincinnati) were formerly the Redskins. After a board vote, they formally adopted a new mascot title as the Raptors earlier this year. I don't know if we are talking the veloci or harrier variety of raptor, but it's a better mascot name than 90% of what other schools in Ohio can boast.

First paragraph, you’re spot on. Second paragraph: it wouldn’t happen. Only activism I could see OHSAA doing there is just refer to the schools in the press materials without the mascot, e.g. Bellevue Redmen would be referred to as simply “Bellevue” or “Bellevue High School.”

Certainly not by my standards. That is a national-level unique mascot. If there weren't the Toronto Raptors, I may be more lenient. As a student, I had heard there were only three schools in the country with Whippet as their mascot. I take it to be close to truth. I once saw someone at a zoo in St. Louis who had a blue & orange t-shirt with Whippets as the mascot...they were considerably less enthused about the rarity of the interaction than I was. I favor mascots on this list that only have one appearance. Even those aren't necessarily unique, as you have the Black Tigers and Golden Panthers who only have one school representing them. Unique, but also not. I do offer considerable leniency if the mascot is common, but unique for an specific reason, such as the Tygers or any school with a direct business/social/historical connection to the name. The list: www.ohsaa.org/Portals/0/News/Media/SchoolNickname-Ranking.pdf

As far as Ohio HS mascots go in our area, I gotta hand it to Shelby & Norwalk for most off-the-wall unique. Sandusky linking their Blue Streaks with Cedar Point is solid. The New Riegel Blue Jackets missed a huge opportunity to be the New Reigel Beagles.
In the entire state, I have my favorites.
Parma Normandy Invaders Unioto Sherman Tanks Kings Knights Beavercreek Beavers Oak Hill Oaks East Technical Scarabs
Another fun mascot quirk: my roommate's high school and college mascot were both the Friars. That seemed like a pretty unique combination to flout. I always felt my combination of high school & college mascot was almost perfectly unique. Roughly three high schools with Whippets, and only one Friars at the D1 level (though there could be a few more small, religious vocational schools that have it too).

South Webster Jeeps is a great one as is the Windham Bombers. Here’s the genesis of “South Webster Jeeps.” “Most people associate the teams’ mascot with the four-wheel motor vehicle that became popular during military operations in World War II. A prime example of mistaken identity was when one sportswriter referring to one of the players who had an exceptional scoring evening stated, “He really put the pedal to the metal.” No, the JEEP of South Webster fame is not the four-wheeler JEEP. The JEEPS of South Webster are proud possessors of a completely unique mascot. Read on friends and neighbors. Before 1940, South Webster High School athletic teams had no official name, although local sportswriters sometimes referred to them as the “midgets.” However, in 1940 the rules of basketball, by accident, helped to produce the mighty JEEP. By the rule in 1940, coaches were not permitted on the playing floor to instruct players. Coaching had to be done prior to the start of the game or at halftime. During rest periods between the first and third quarters of play the team manager at South Webster would roll a small box onto the court to supply players with refreshments and first-aid materials. However, the coach at South Webster was accused (and rightly so perhaps) of sending in plays and instructive notes in this little four-wheeled box. Local fans were positive that when that little box was sent onto the floor, players were getting more than refreshments. Everyone knew that the box contained answers to the problems being presented by the opposing team. Also in 1940, a favorite comic strip contained a character who knew everything. In 1936, the character of “Eugene the Jeep, “ a small, bright-eyed creature from Africa who was all knowing, was introduced into the “Popeye” comic strip. Popeye gave the Jeep to his girlfriend, Olive Oyl, as a birthday gift. The Jeep, whose diet consisted of orchids, helped Popeye solve many difficult situations in his comic strip career. Since the JEEP was all knowing, some local South Webster people associated the coach’s box, containing messages to his players, with the comic strip character. According to, what is now legend, the late Mayor of South Webster, Mr. Gilbert Havener, is credited as the first person to label the box as the “JEEP BOX.” The sports editor of The Portsmouth Times (now Daily Times), Lynn Wittenberg, picked up the term and used it in describing South Webster’s 1940 Scioto County Tournament team. The mascot was never officially adopted, but has been, since 1940 generally accepted. The evolution of the JEEP continued in 1949, with JEEPS appearing for the first time on varsity basketball uniforms and, in 1950, the JEEP emblem appeared on warm-up pants of varsity players. Although never officially adopted, and often mistakenly compared to the common four-wheeled vehicle, the JEEP remains the rallying symbol for Bloom Local High School at South Webster . . . . teams, students, graduates and her many fans. It is a unique mascot and that uniqueness is one of the major reasons for it’s continuing popularity. Read on friends and neighbors.”

Dublin Coffman Shamrocks Dublin Jerome Irish Dublin Scioto Celtics All with varying combinations of green in their color scheme. It is similar to how all of those Olentangy schools throw blue in their scheme, or how the Pickerington schools both have purple. Those inter-city rivalries must be fun. I have a friend who lives near Dublin that has heard how students of one district mock the students from the other district for being "poor," which is laughable outside of the context of Dublin.

They are hard to keep straight since it's the Dublin Scioto Irish and the Dublin Jerome Celtics. FWIW the Celtics are pronounced with a hard C (unlike the Bostonians). Personally, I like a good alliterative nickname so I put Crestview Cougars, Perkins Pirates, Ashland Arrows and Tiffin Tornadoes at the top of the list. If Bellevue changes their name I like the Bellevue Bears, Bulldogs or Bison.

Top headline in today's Fishwrapper states that lawmakers have called out certain mascots as "hurtful" and that PC is reviewing theirs.

Port Clinton is known for being on the lake and it’s fishing. Just an idea but how about the Port Clinton Baiters?
What say you?

Port Clinton is known for being on the lake and it’s fishing. Just an idea but how about the Port Clinton Baiters? What say you? In my brief hooping career, we had a summer event up at Port Clinton. One of their plays was "fish," which I thought was funny in the way it would be if we had a play called corn. I know Fairport Harding go by the Skippers. We have the Clearview Clippers. Baiters would win my vote.

Shelby Whippets are changing their name to “Whip Dogs” to be more inclusive. That would settle down the labradoodles and make them happy.

Just saw on Fox 8 News, Parma residents voted to keep the Redmen name. It will stay the Parma Redmen. Hopefully Bellevue and Port Clinton communities do the same.
