I’m curious to see what you folks think about this. I think that Spiders was a natural.

Sucks! I'm sick of all this "PC" crap! What about the Chicago Blackhawks, the Atlanta Braves, the Seminoles, the KC Chiefs? Just to name a few. Did I say the whole thing SUCKS!!! ??

Spiders would have been great and you could have marketed that brand nationally with cool spider/web logos (Marvel tie-ins) to generate much needed revenue, which Cleveland needs, since no one goes to their games despite the fact they have been one of the 4-5 best run organization in MLB since Francona arrived.
Not thrilled with Guardians which sounds very vanilla and generic to me. Also doesn't really seem to match the color scheme blue/red. Maybe it will play better in Nashville.

You only get an opportunity like this once in a hundred years. I think the Indians blew it.
Oh and by the way, the Dodgers still suck. .

I'm not a fan of the name change but it was inevitable so I get it. As far as moving I don't see it happening. The state will pony up money for the refurb. Of course I didn't see a name change 3 years ago either.

I agree with the eSECpn announcers, It's "Silly". We should have had a poll at the top.

I wasn't thrilled with the idea of a name change, especially for the stated reasons it was done. But I think there is more at play here.
Cleveland Indians baseball has an incredibly rich history and there was so much to choose from. To do so would have helped soothe the traditionalists and make an incredibly strong connection with Cleveland. But they didn't. Someone in the other thread mentioned a connection to the art deco style of the pylons of the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge. But that would seem awfully contrived it it came from the team.
This makes me believe the rumored move to Vegas is a done deal. I can't see any real connection between "Guardians" and Cleveland. But "Guardians" does kinda go with the Vegas Golden Knights and the Las Vegas Raiders. Making this change was probably part of the deal. They kept the rest of the team's look the same to push a feeling of "continuity" before the move... I would expect a whole new look after the move to Vegas.
For the record, while I was no fan of the name change, I thought "Forest City Blues" would have been a fantastic name choice. Unique, with strong ties back to historical Cleveland, Cleveland Indians baseball, and their current look as well.

we ain't moving to Vegas, if anyone goes to Vegas it will be the A's
i do think there is a good chance we get shipped to Nashville or Charlotte, and if we do leave it will almost certainly be one of those two cities...Baltimore already has a MLB team rofl

They could have really given them a name with a Cleveland connection:

Will Tris Speaker still be considered playing for the Cleveland Indians? Will the Cleveland Indians and Larry Doby still be the first in the American League?
At least they didn't do what the Washington Redskins did. When they renamed their team the WFT. Not much more than an anagram of a well know acronym.

The Bay Area media has been banging us over the head with the “inevitably” of an A’s move there for weeks. Portland also has been the conversation. Fisher, the A’s owner since ‘05 is a reclusive dilltante. His GM mouthpiece, Kaval keeps saying the team is unhappy with every offer from the city despite Oakland agreeing to the majority of the team’s demands, then Jets off to Vegas or Portland for a ham handed threat. I’ve been a diehard Giants fan since they arrived here in ‘58. My daughter In law grew up in the East Bay and has only recently crossed over from the A’s to the dark side. For years when she and my son would go to Giants games she would show up in the gear of the opposing team.

I wonder if the Native Americans who would protest before the first game each season would like the Indians to get rid of the ugly caricature with the big nose etc. Would they then accept just the name Indians?
