At 84. One of the O-line greats in Browns history. With his accomplishments it's a crime he's not in the NFL Hall of Fame.
I knew he was the first person to paddle a canoe across Lake Erie. But until today I did not know on a dare he once ran 62 miles from his home in Wooster to a pre-season practice in Cleveland. A great article in the MNJ about his life.

It was a great article. I didn't know his family owned a livery in Loudonville.I remember when there were 2 liveries down there in the 80s and I had used both of them at one time or another so I'm sure I donated some money to him. I met him a few times and he was always super nice. RIP

One of my favorite players from that era along with Gene Hickerson. Good heavens, the memories.

I read in Terry Pluto’s article about Dick’s passing that Lou Groza took him under his wing and taught him how to be a left tackle in the NFL. Then at the end of his career, he did the same with Doug Dieken. The Browns had amazing talent at that position for many years. RIP Dick Shafrath.

As much as I like Dieken on the radio I would not quite classify him as amazing talent. Serviceable but not amazing. Ha One thing you could count on in every game was "holding #73"
