An early look at the SBC conference from the Borofan rankings. Though it’s an early preseason rankings and much will change with weight classes it gives an insight to how tough the SBC conference is. Looking forward to seeing the Lake Division once more returning with the Bay/River Divisions giving it the strength to be one of Ohio’s toughest wrestling conference tournaments! Forty one individuals are ranked in the top 24 in Division 2 and 3 in the state this year. Starting at 106 the favored SBC champ comes from no other than Edison with the house hold name in wrestling of Hermes. The freshman Abe is currently ranked 2nd in Division 3 and has no other state ranked competition at this time in the preseason rankings. At 113 we have the returning and projected D3 state champ, Abe’s older brother from Edison junior Max Hermes. Max will have his hands full in conference and the Division 3 state tournament with Oak Harbor’s Senior Michael Judge who is currently ranked 3rd. Rounding out the field is Perkins Sophomore at 19th Wyatt Nemitz. Standing alone at 120 and ranked 3rd in the state at D2 is senior Billy Smith from Perkins. 126 will be another excellent showdown between Division 3’s 4th ranked sophomore, Marcus Medina from Edison as he will take on another sophomore from Clyde, Lance Overmyer who is respectfully ranked 6th in Division 2. The only empty weight class with no one ranked is 132 where we will probably see movement by schools trying to capitalize on an individual gold. Followed by the deepest conference weight of 138. This could be possibly the match up of the SBC championship as senior favorite from Columbian with a state runner up projection in D2 Bret Minnick. His greatest challenge is Edison’s very tough and talented sophomore Kohen Horvath as he is projected to climb the podium a few more steps from last year being ranked 3rd in Division 3. Not to over look the freshman sensation William Stanley lurking in the shadows from Clyde with a Division 2 eighth spot ranking. Rounding out this deep weight in D2 is Bellevue’s junior Clay Alley at 18th while D3 has Oak Harbor’s Junior Owen Miller at 11th. Followed up by Gibsonburg senior Antonio Villarreal at 24th.

Moving into the heavier weights where the ohsaa chose to change the weight classes from last year and possibly shaking the state tournament up a bit along with the SBC. At 144 in Division 3 ranked 6th from Oak Harbor is senior Cade Petersen as he will look to battle with Bellevue’s senior Justin Smythe as he holds 9th in D2 with junior CJ Poole on his heels at 10 from the talented Tiffin Columbian. Followed by 150 with another Columbian Grappler looking to Challenge Edison’s SBC streak is junior Maddox Simcoe as he looks to be the favorite ranked 4th in Division 2. Followed by Edison’s junior Duke Hermes ranked 8th in D3 for another showdown between these two favorite schools. Rounding out the competition Oak Harbor looks to hold the 12th ranked spot but to be determined with a wrestle off. H. Buhro and R. Jacobsen. With Oak Harbor having state ranked guys below and above this weight class they have what we call in the wrestling world a “log jam” which is a good problem to have as Oak Harbor is gonna make some noise in the conference as always. Rounding out the class is Lakota’s freshman ranked 21st Braxton Quaintance. Moving into the 157 weight class for another marquee match up we have the favorite ranked 3rd in Division 2 junior Max Ray from ……….Columbian! He will be challenged by Gibsonburg junior Connor Smith ranked 5th in D3. Jack Zeitzheim the senior from Oak harbor ranked 15th in D3 with Senior Keegan Schoen from Perkins ranked 13th in D2 will add to the mix. Heading into the 165 pound weight class we have the favorite, projected Division 3 State champ and Willard’s lone ranked wrestler in Shadrick Slone. He will be challenged by Edison senior Remington Bauer as he is ranked 9th in D3. While junior Landon Cook ranked 7th in D2 from Columbian will be looking to make his statement in the conference. All three challengers were teammates two years ago at Edison. This is what we call in the wrestling world “log jam avoided”. At 175 we have the nationally ranked and D1 college commit to the University of West Virginia. Returning state champ and projected once again, Senior Brody Conley from no other than Tiffin Columbian. His challengers will be division 3 ranked 3rd, senior Logan Lloyd from Edison as fellow senior from Clyde ranked 8th in D2, Cade Carroll. At 190 is 17th ranked D2 senior Josh Stanley from Clyde while Columbian has sophomore in the division ranked 20th in Manny Aller. Division 3 with a 19th ranking from Oak Harbor in junior Kenyon Adkinson to round out the weight class. The next weight at 215 has from Bellevue Evan Straub, the senior is currently ranked 16th in Division 2 while the challengers from Divison 3 will be seniors Jacob Thompson from Edison ranked 6th, Dylan Schiets from Oak Harbor ranked 14th and Lakota’s Spencer Franks ranked 15th. Finally moving into the 285 pound weight class we have senior from Bellevue Brock Nunez who I would predict the favorite here for conference as he is ranked 16th in Division 2. His competition from D3 will be Margaretta’ lone ranked junior at 13th Seth Stanley followed by 14th ranked senior from Edison Jackson Berardi.

With a tight over all team race I see some adjustments with the 132 lb weight class and probably securing a team title. The top five team finish projections for 2022: 1) Edison 2) Tiffin Columbian 3) Bellevue 4) Oak Harbor 5) Clyde
Individual projected champs: 106 Abe Hermes Edison 113 Max Hermes Edison 120 Billy Smith Perkins 126 Lance Overmyer Clyde 132 Marcus Medina Edison 138 Bret Minnick Columbian 144 Cade Peterson Oak Harbor 150 Maddox Simcoe Columbian 157 Max Ray Columbian 165 Shadrick Slone Willard 175 Brody Conley Columbian 190 Josh Stanley Clyde 215 Evan Straub Bellevue 285 Brock Nunez Bellevue

I'll take a way too early shot at predictions.
106- A.Hermes 113- M.Hermes 120- B.Smith/M.Judge 126- 132- B.Minnick/M.Medina 138- B.Minnick/L.Overmeyer 144- M.Simcoe/K.Horvath 150- D.Hermes/CJ.Poole 157- C.Smith 165- S.Slone/M.Ray 175- B.Conley 190- K.Adkinson/S.Franks 215- J.Thompson/M.Aller 285- J.Berardi
Obviously way early. Still weight class movement coming, 126 I have no idea Oak Harbor maybe here. Where I put 2 kids at some of that would be due to weight class change possibility yet. Where I have one person at they are the clear favorite. @165 I would give the slight edge to Slone due to HtH win last year, however with the school change for M.Ray and Slone, big talent room upgrade for Ray and huge downgrade for Slone, could be the difference. This should prove to be the best final of the tournament, both highly ranked in their respective divisions. Another weight class that could be tough to guess is at 190 not sure who emerges there yet. First weekend glance could be Finnen from Edison, Cook from Columbian wrestled @190, also S.Franks from Lakota could make it there possibly, also Adkinson from OH. Short version-wide open.
As of now I would have Edison as clear favorites, Columbian as the runner up. Edison having most likely 2 locks to win and several other finalists. Locks at 106 and 113. Columbian has 1 lock in Conley and heavy favorites in Minnick and Simcoe along with a sure finalist @165 and possibly a few more finalists.

106: clear favorite 1) Abe Hermes Edison Not sure how the next three finish but at this point I went in this order 2) Sawyer Smith Perkins 3) Joshua Cornell Port Clinton 4) Lane Thacker Lakota
113: This will be up for grabs and an exciting finals match and an excellent semi finals on the bottom side of the bracket! 1) Max Hermes Edison 2) Billy Smith Perkins 3) Michael Judge Oak Harbor These are three top guys in the conference and if they are all three in this weight come conference it will be an exciting weight to watch. 4) Braylen Williams Huron I picked to be top four but I’m sure I’m overlooking somebody.
120: 1) Wyatt Nemitz Perkins I have as the top guy followed by 2) CJ Fisher Clyde 3) Kaleb Ruhl Norwalk I feel confident at this point and rounded it out with 4) Brady Losie Oak Harbor, but look for any comments on someone I may have missed
126: This might be the most unknown weight in the SBC but went with currently 132 ranked that is suppose to move down this week. 1) Connor Robbins Willard Not sure who may else move in but went with what little I know at this point for the following. 2) Grant Woodruff Bellevue 3) William Jackson Port Clinton 4) Hayden Graffice Norwalk
132: Should be another highlight finals match 1) Lance Overmyer Clyde 2) Marcus Medina Edison 3) Zach Oprzadek Perkins 4) Brayden Myerholtz Oak Harbor I may have missed someone but I’m limited in my information as well for this weight class.

138: 1) Bret Minnick Columbian and should be an interesting finals with the talented freshman. 2) Will Stanley Clyde 3) Owen Miller Oak Harbor 4) Clayton Alley Bellevue
144: 1) Kohen Horvath Edison 2) Maddox Simcoe Columbian and should be another excellent finals worth admission in of its self! 3) Cade Petersen Oak Harbor a solid grappler again that could challenge. 4) Dax Heuring Bellevue but not sure who else could be lurking at this weight.
150: once again will be a well anticipated with a solid four guys on my radar! 1) Justin Smythe Bellevue 2) Duke Hermes Edison 3) CJ Poole Columbian Columbian 4) Hayden Buhro Oak Harbor
157: 1) Connor Smith Gibsonburg should be the clear favorite but interesting finals from 2) Jack Zeitzheim Oak Harbor 3) Keegan Schoen Perkins 4) Braxton Quaintance Lakota
165: will be another top notch finals like 113! 1) Shadrick Slone Willard who won a tight head to head last season in the 3rd period over 2) Max Ray Columbian but like mentioned earlier above Max has upgraded to a loaded room while Shadrick doesn’t have the talent in the room like last year. Will be another exciting finals match! 3) Remington Bauer Edison who can’t be over looked followed by 4) Carvie Jones Sandusky who had a big win last week over state ranked and who I choose to mention at fifth. 5) Cade Carroll Clyde

175: The most talented individual in the SBC will be looking for his fourth Conference title 1) Brody Conley Columbian 2) Logan Lloyd Edison a clear finalist and a dangerous opponent 3) Broch Mansor Oak Harbor 4) Izacc Prochnow Bellevue
190: 1) Landon Cook Columbian 2) Kenyon Adkinson Oak Harbor 3) Keegan Wooten Huron 4) Cole Beltran Bellevue Another weight where I could have someone I’m missing on.
215: 1) Evan Straub Bellevue who has a win last season over 2) Jacob Thompson Edison 3) Dylan Schiets Oak Harbor 4) Manny Aller Columbian
285: should be another clear favorite 1) Brock Nunez Bellevue 2) Jackson Berardi Edison 3) Seth Stanley Margaretta 4) Elijah Perkins Huron

I've seen quite a few SBC schools wrestle this year so I wanted to put my two cents in here! A couple I stole from Crimson blooded because I don't know some of the weaker weight classes.
106: 1) Abe Hermes Edison 2) Sawyer Smith Perkins 3) Joshua Cornell Port Clinton 4) Lane Thacker Lakota Not a lot of 106's this year from what I have seen. Hermes is clear favorite.
113: 1) Max Hermes Edison 2) Billy Smith Perkins 3) Braylen Williams Huron 4) James Sander Oak Harbor Great finals here! This weight class loses some depth with no Judge this year.
120: 1) Wyatt Nemitz Perkins 2) Brady Losie Oak Harbor 3) CJ Fisher Clyde 4) Kaylor Reynolds Calvert Curious to see who can step up in this wide open weight class. TC had a decent 106/113 last year that could be up here but I've yet to see him wrestle yet.
126: 1) Connor Robbins Willard 2) William Jackson Port Clinton 3) Grant Woodruff Bellevue 4) Dalton Boyd Clyde I've seen William Jackson wrestle a few times now and he is strong/explosive. Another wide open weight class.
132: 1) Lance Overmyer Clyde 2) Marcus Medina Edison 3) Lance Crawford Hopewell Loudon 4) Zach Oprzadek Perkins Great finals match here!
138: 1) Bret Minnick Columbian 2) Will Stanley Clyde 3) Owen Miller Oak Harbor 4) Gibsonburg kid 5) Clayton Alley Bellevue 6) Isreal Ortiz Hopewell Loudon Heard Minnick is having more trouble with his knee. He has yet to compete this season so we will see if he does this year. Stanley is the real deal. Very strong and physical for a freshman. This is a very very deep weight class with talented kids. I can't remember the Gibsonburg wrestler at 138, freshman, but he is very very good. I could see him challenging Stanley and Miller.
144: 1) Kohen Horvath Edison 2) Maddox Simcoe Columbian 3) Cade Petersen Oak Harbor 4) Antonio Villareal Gibsonburg Another great finals! I also heard Peterson is no longer on the team? Any truth to that? I haven't seen a result for him yet.
150: 1) CJ Poole Columbian Columbian 2) Duke Hermes Edison 3) Justin Smythe Bellevue 4) Hayden Buhro Oak Harbor Any four of these guys could win it. I think this is a total toss up.
157: 1) Connor Smith Gibsonburg 2) Jack Zeitzheim Oak Harbor 3) Braxton Quaintance Lakota 4)Keegan Schoen Perkins Pretty easy weight class to predict here.
165: 1) Max Ray Columbian 2) Shadrick Slone Willard 3) Remington Bauer Edison 4) Carvie Jones Sandusky 5) Cade Carroll Clyde This weight class goes five deep of very strong wrestlers. Carvie Jones is very athletic and will be a good match with Bauer. I give the slight edge to Ray after boosting his practice room.
175: 1) Brody Conley Columbian 2) Logan Lloyd Edison 3) Nico Garcia Hopewell Loudon 4) Broch Mansor Oak Harbor Brody Conley. Enough Said.
190: 1) Landon Cook Columbian 2) Stanley Clyde 3) Whetsel Gibsonburg 4) Spencer Franks Lakota This is going to be another fun weight! I have no idea who wins between these four!
215: 1) Evan Straub Bellevue 2) Jacob Thompson Edison 3) Manny Aller Columbian 4) Dylan Schiets Oak Harbor
285: 1) Brock Nunez Bellevue 2) Jackson Berardi Edison 3) Seth Stanley Margaretta 4) Elijah Perkins Huron
Team: 1) Edison 2) Columbian 3) Bellevue 4) Oak Harbor 5) Perkins 6) Clyde 7) Gibsonburg 8) Lakota 9) Hopewell Loudon 10) Willard

Unfortunately it looks like the Lake Division will once again be separate from the Bay and River Division. This really takes away from the SBC being an awesome wrestling conference. They might as well just divide it up into separate leagues if we can’t have an overall SBC individual champion per weight class. Big let down!

VERY simple. How often do River school wresters have a chance to be an "overall champ"? THE point.

VERY simple. How often do River school wresters have a chance to be an "overall champ"? THE point. 1. Edison 193; 2. Columbian 180.5; 3. Lakota 157; 4. Perkins 146.5; 5. Oak Harbor 142; 6. Remington Bauer (Edison) 8-2 175: Logan Lloyd (Edison) pin Dominick Whetsel (Gibsonburg) 1:25 190: Spencer Franks (Lakota) dec. Manny Aller (Columbian) 8-4 River Wrestling ain't bad. Lakota could win it overall in a year or two! But the SBC is a great wrestling conference. If the future of the SBC splits to a Sandusky River Conference and the SBC. They still need to keep the wrestling tournament together. It’s unfortunate we are losing Oak Harbor.
