I am not defending Holtmann with this statement, but what top level coach wants to come to Ohio State? Has OSU ever been a magnet for the top college coaches in the country. A tough part of being an Ohio State basketball fan is making sure we understand where we fit in right now. If we pay a coach the top salary in the country, do we have the fan support to cover it? If we pay the a coach a top salary, do we have the Boosters to pay the NIL to get the top players? Do players want to live in Columbus? A lot of top players go to Gonzaga in the middle of nowhere in Washington, if Mark Few can get players to go there, a coach can get players to come to Columbus. I know he's had success so players want to play there but just speaking geographically. Look at the top 5 in basketball right now, only one is one I'd consider a college basketball "blue blood" and that's Arizona, and they haven't even really had huge success in a long time. Look at what Nate Oats has done at Alabama, they were never considered a top basketball school and now all of a sudden they're top 5 or 10 every year. It can be done.

So are you saying we should give Holtmann 23 years to become a great coach and recruit better players or are you saying we need to put focus on one of our assistants? Few has been there since 1990 working thru the ranks. My point was do we really think OSU could get a Mark Few caliber coach. I agree, Bama took a shot on a younger coach from a smaller mid-major school with success and they did well. Similar to what OSU did with a different result so far. In the last 10 years they have finished in the Top 25 one time.(in 2021) So this season would make two times in the last 11 seasons with both in the last 3 years. A agree anything can be done. I would have some worries in dealing with this NIL. I have heard OSU has already lost high recruits in money wars. Unfortunately it no longer comes down to being the best school or the best coach. I love OSU basketball but bringing Calipari or Self is not solving everything.

All I was trying to say is in college basketball you can have great teams, in short time(like Alabama) or in longer time period(like Gonzaga). You don't have to be Duke or Kentucky or Kansas to be great in college basketball. It's way different than football where you can probably name 4 teams each year and know that will be the best team.
If they hold on to Holtmann for 23 years do they eventually turn into a Gonzaga situation where patience paid off? I have no idea. Maybe. But if they also get rid of him they can find someone who could turn it around quickly.

I'm not disagreeing, in fact I mostly agree, but I'm just asking the questions because I am wondering if OSU is a school that would attract a top coach and or top players every year. I doubt it. My point was Few started as a Grad*assistant and bleeds Bulldog basketball even before he was the head coach.

I see College Basketball analysts saying the grass isn't always greener on the other side and that Buckeye fans should be cautious of wanting to fire Holtmann because between Butler and here he has a 188-99 record and has given Ohio St a tournament birth every year he has been here. Is a tournament berth the standard here at Ohio St? Ohio St fired the greatest coach they ever had in Thad Matta because they saw a decline for 4 years. Holtmann hasn't finished higher than 4th in the Big Ten since 2018 and he hasn't reached the second weekend of the big dance once here. And the last 3 Coaches the Buckeyes have had have all at least reached the elite 8 and the program went to 3 final fours during that span between those 3 coaches. Ohio St basketball is top 10 in yearly revenue they can find another coach much better than this joke of a coach Holtmann. WHO??

Few gets the kind of players he likes from the West coast and outside the country. This year 9 are from the west coast. Ever been to Spokane and their campus? Few has it made in the West Coast Conference. Even in a down year he would win the conference, get one of the top 8 seeds and play in the West Bracket. Gonzaga doesn't have a football team and hasn't since 1941. Sometimes I wonder if he even cares about winning it all. If he did he could already be at a place where he could. Getting a Nate Oats is a crap shoot. Who can predict who the next MAC coach will be to win 20+ games at a major conference on a consistent basis. I doubt the head coach with a successful record at a Butler, Dayton or Cincy would even interview for the likes of an Alabama.

What makes you think that? COULD, might, maybe....find someone is more like it. Ohio State had several head coaches most thought would be that guy. There's a very bad record for finding that guy at Ohio State.

Conference titles? A lot.
If national titles is the only measuring stick then that’s a huge hill to climb. I think most Ohio State fans just want a conference title every few years or at least challenge for one, a better overall record, and deeper tourney runs past just the first weekend.

He loves living in Spokane and coaching the Zags

The zags play in a weak conference anyway. They will go undefeated once in awhile in the regular season and then maybe make it to the chip and get beaten by a power 5 team who plays real comp in conference.

You’re missing the point here, even if they do play in a weak conference, they have still been way more successful than Ohio State in the tournament. They were national runners up in 2017 and 2021, made the elite 8 in 2015 and 2019 as well, and quite a few other sweet sixteens. So we can make fun of their conference all we want but they are still finding ways to have way more success. I’d take all that right now at Ohio State if we could. If Holtmann was having years like those, I don’t think anyone would be complaining about him.

Few gets a lot of HIS type of players from the west coast. They play in an easy conference, giving them all year to work on his style of play without having to worry about getting beat down in a very physical and usually the best conference in the country. THUS by tournament time he has a solid team that can win a few games AND he gets to play in the West Region. THE WAY to find success. Kinda like Dabo/Clemson in the ACC in football.
Holtmann has to figure out a way to get good, not great players, 3 per class every year. That will stay 3 or 4 years. So that crap shoot players from The Portal aren't needed to fill roster spots. Kinda like the Wisconsin formula. AND not have to give out 5 scholarships every other year when there are huge holes in the roster. It is MUCH easier for the Dukes, North Carolina's, Kansas's and Michigan States of the college world to restock every year.

Do the Buckeyes win another regular season game this year? @iowa, @purdue, Penn St, Illinois, Maryland, and @michigan St. I think they win 1 at most.

They have 5 games left against Purdue, Penn state, Illinois, Maryland, and Michigan state. Man, I’m not sure if they get another win. The best chance is probably Penn State. It’ll be an interesting off-season if there are changes made and if any players hit the transfer portal.

The Buckeyes Women are getting their moxy back and once again, playing with confidence they enjoyed earlier in the season. The Buckeyes came home with a win at Penn State 67-55, leading as much as 29 pts. 2nd half. The Buckeyes were led by Rikki Harris with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists. The ladies are now 11-5 Big Ten, 21-5 overall and elevating their game at just the right time, with both tournaments looming in the near future.

You are missing some of the facts that they were playing without the services of key players. Yes, they are getting their game back. Comparing the women's program to the trainwreck that is men's basketball is a terrrible injustice to this talented team of ladies. They have been a pleasure to watch all season, even through the bump in the road that is recent period of struggles. The good news is, you can't keep a team like this down for long. The B1G enjoys some of the best programs in the country and the tournament will be a fun and exciting time.

I think this team has officially checked out for the year. Another 27 point loss. Something I’ve been noticing the last several games too is a lot of arguing between Sueing and Sensabaugh, it happened today again I saw several times of Sueing going right to Sensabaugh after a whistle or dead ball and obviously upset with him about something. It feels like some of the older guys aren’t fully accepting of these freshmen. Maybe I’m just over analyzing it too. What a mess right now though.
