Moton is a former Mansfield player, so are you saying he has no love for Ontario. Is it first hand when it comes from the kid' parent? Are you talking like ever in his life. Is that a comment about him never coaching before and having held an open gym. What I’m saying is someone saying they know a kid who got recruited is pretty unreliable as a source. Did Moton jokingly say, “You could always come play for Ontario.”? Or did he sit down with the family and say I got a guy who will provide an apartment dirt cheap and a business owner who’ll give you a job. Those are two very different scenarios. Also I’m saying maybe we should let him coach an open gym before we start stirring up controversy. What I'm saying, extremely reliable. Also being told that the leading scorer that returns for Ontario has decided not to play basketball next year. Could change but that is the feeling right now.

So are you saying someone who you trust enough to stake your reputation on was offered an incentive to come play basketball at Ontario? If that is true either you are that family has an obligation to report it to the OHSAA.

In a public business setting, if one is a member of an organization and is knowingly aware of behavior that fails to meet ethical and legal standards, they are subject to prosecution for passively endorsing the activity, at minimum. Saying "the boss said so" is not a good defense unless you can proclaim stupidity of a certain, embarrassing degree. And if you are proclaiming that stupidity based on knowing the facts and not understanding they were unethical/rule-breaking, then one was never qualified for such a position in the first place. That's best case scenario: being too stupid.
If said individual is not privy to the organization via employment but acknowledges factual unethical behavior... then not acting on it is either due to speculation or willful negligence. High school sports is minor enough that no one really cares if you know of a salacious rumor that breaks OHSAA rules... but if the Ontario coach is misbehaving to the point that we can call it "fact" over "rumor"... then the informed party who doesn't speak up to authorities is simply unwilling to live up to a relatively simple definition of being an ethical citizen.
All said, if there is known info that the Ontario coach is actively breaking OHSAA rules and the informed party does not act on it, I see it as one of the following:
- being toolazy/unwilling to act - being too stupid to see the issue - Does not care enough to bother ala libertarian virtues
If the talk is true and it can be posted on here with confidence that it is happening, then it can be acted on within OHSAA bylaws. Otherwise, we're dealing with someone who accepts an unethical mode of behavior.
So. What am I looking at here? Someone who is lying? Or someone who can live with inaction? Whistle-blowing ain't easy, but tell that to Enron's Ms. Watkins.

If I’m not mistaken Moton’s kids go/went to Ontario. So even though he played at Senior doesn’t mean he doesn’t have ties to Ontario. It is interesting that they ended up hiring a guy with with no head coaching experience. But given the parent situation over there and how the past coach was handled I can see why some turned it down. If the admin/board is going to allow these parents to run things then why would anyone want to subject themselves to that. I too played open gym with Jerry and he was really good. Smooth lefty jumper was hard to defend. I think I read he may have played overseas for a bit too.

Great guy, really good basketball player, and I’ve played ball with him. He knows the game. If they run him off the problem will lie squarely on Ontario. Has he told you about his time in prison? Asking for a friend.

Asking for a friend. No, and that would come as a shock to me. If true he seems like a guy who got his act together.

It’s Googleable. Judicially exonerated due to wrongful conviction based on false testimony. One of 17 people who had their convictions overturned because a DEA informant admitted to giving false information. Served 1.6 years of a 3 year sentence for something he didn’t do. I only have more respect for him and the fact he’s not a bitter, angry man. That’s assuming it’s the same person. It lists Richland County and the dates fit.

The article I read said 2.5 years of a 3 year term and he plead guilty. Who does that? The article read the informant lied about some of the details so the entire case on all of them fell thru. Interesting line was that Moton worked for American Express before the arrest and would like to return but feared his time in jail would tarnish his resume. Regardless, it's sad in many ways.

Who does that? People who know their chances of getting acquitted in a system that isn’t fair and impartial to some people. People who realize a plea bargain for a shorter term is better than the alternative. It happens a lot. One clearly unreliable criminal ruined the lives of over 20 people. Maybe all 20 of those people weren’t law abiding citizens, but what kind of system convicts multiple people on the word of one guy?

The entire case fell apart due to an informants lies, but there was a reason they were all there, a reason their names were given and a reason connections were made. Plea bargains normally are a way for guilty people to reduce their sentence from what I've seen. If you think that being self employed, being hired by a high school as a head coach without any experience and rubbing elbows with a local doctor is a ruined life, you may want to look around a little more.

Plea bargains are also a way for someone with limited resources and/or a public decedent to take the lesser of two evils regardless of innocence or guilt. I’ll bet some of those people involved weren’t good people, but nobody should have to make that decision. I also bet if you follow up on all involved Mr Moton is the exception as far as the outcome which is, again, a testament to him as an individual.

I'm not here to judge, but only saying it's a shock to see what is happening. Truth is someone lied, drug charges filed, accused plead guilty, received a reduced sentence instead of going to trial, served some time in jail, released from prison early because of lies, record erased and now he is your head coach without any coaching experience what so ever. As outspoken as I remember you being, I cannot imagine your thoughts had he been hired at SHS in 2012. The way the previous Ontario coach was treated, without any criminal connections, let's both hope this goes well for the kids sake.
