Harding missed a 3 at the buzzer to lose to a very good NY team that went 21-6 last year, 48-46.

Guess they won a state championship in NY last year and off to a strong start this year. ^

This is a bit of a derailment to talk about separation of private/public schools come tournament time, but this is a thought I always carried based on what I've seen in my days in Rhode Island.
I would argue the separation of private/public schools in that NJ/NY and New England corridor tends to lead to a particular flight of athletes from public schools to the private schools who play in the private division state tournaments. For the public schools, your state championships become pretty devalued. The private divisions become supercharged. Class A Catholic in NY is probably still a little wimpy in ways, but I would guess it smokes a lot of public divisions.
The population centers in Mass, RI, NY and NJ are obviously very dense. Just using RI as an example, Providence's metro area is over a million people. For any Rhode Islander, you are normally only 20-30 minutes to get to the top programs like La Salle, Bishop Hendricken, or Mount St. Charles. If you are a kid with any aspirations, the separation of public/private means you don't get situations like OG playing against high level private schools in the state tournament. It is relatively common for fringe D1 hopefuls to do a 5th year of HS at a prep academy after a typical public high school career to boost their stock by playing a harder tournament schedule along with more resources to travel to other high-level programs.
Another example I know about is Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA. If you Google Map their campus, the football field has no visitor stands (an overthrown ball on that side actually hits trees or goes off a steep hill). The home stands has three rows of seats. That said, they had both a UCLA bound QB and Shabazz Napier (who won the 2014 National Title with Uconn) on the football team per a friend of mine who attended the school. Lawrence Academy would travel like St. Ignatius and St. Ed's do to fill their schedule.

Damn. Lucas had a good start to the season, I guess it’s just who they’ve played.

Another convincing win by the Tigers against an undefeated team. The Tigers are on a roll, they are winning in dominate fashion and there is no stopping this team. I really don't see this team losing another game with #2 and #12 scoring with ease.

I really don't see this team losing another game with #2 and #12 scoring with ease. For one, Lucas got to 7-0 by playing 7 cupcakes. You’d think for yourself being Galions #1 fan you’d know the name of certain players instead of jersey numbers.

Great game in Lex tonight. A lot of people will focus on the controversial call at the end which would have tied the game. But similar to Shelby’s game against OG, they were plagued by way too many missed bunnies all night. And it wasn’t isolated to one person. Several people missed easy shots. But in what is becoming a trend, Bruskotter needs help in big games. He scores 32 of our 57. DeVito had 11 and made some big threes in the fourth qtr. Someone else has to step up and help. Too much senior experience on this team to not get production from others. Until we get a consistent second and third person who can produce in these key games it will be a quick postseason for the Whippets.

With about 20 seconds left, Alex dribbled to the low post, established his pivot foot, and made a spin move into a floater that went in. Traveling was called.
After the game, someone who was filming showed the tape to some of the Shelby fans. It was close, but it did appear as though his pivot foot slipped enough to warrant the call. It was a shrug your shoulders moment of "was it that close? It was? Shucks, his foot moved a little..."
As far as end-game calls go, hard to get too greedy after escaping RV with a win.

The Shelby photographer had a video and he posted it online. The pivot was more of a hop and then a turn. Pretty easy call to see on film but easy to argue live. I suppose I didn't see that as controversial since it was pretty clear.

Shelby’s rebounding edge (42-31) and Bruskotter's foul shooting (12-16) were big factors in the game.

Pretty insane that it was this close with the Whippets shooting just 31%. If you watched the game you may know why. Even Lexington was 0% from the 3 pt line in the first half. I bet Shelby is used to uncontested layups and open shots. Last night they were contested in almost every way. Plus the ball was predictably in the hands of one player without much movement. Each player was left to try and create their own shot on many possessions. If we had stats I would think their close games with Ott-Gland, Harding and RV were with similar stats. I can understand your feelings though with such a veteran caliber team.

Shelby’s rebounding edge (42-31) and Bruskotter's foul shooting (12-16) were big factors in the game. Watching him play it is impressive how he gets some of the fouls called. He has a gift of selling limited contact from what I have seen.

I agree with points by several posters. The Whippets have to get Lantz and Ramsey more involved offensively in games if they want to win districts.

He has a gift of selling limited contact from what I have seen. Ill say it again. The kid is very good at drawing contact. Are some questionable? Yes, they are. But if you look at Alex after a game, he consistently has scratches all over his arms and shoulders from getting beat on every game. Lex did a lot of the same stuff defensively that OG did by putting smaller, quicker guys on him. As I said after the RV game watch some Shelby game film and just pay attention to Alex and watch what he goes through then you’ll understand.

I think he is impressive at selling contact when there is none or very little. I can reference the RV game again. Alex may be 6 foot 7 and weigh 210 pounds, and last night at times was being guarded by 6 foot and 160 but Alex was picking himself off the floor on drives. Marks and scratches can be common for a lot of players in most games. The difference for Alex is he has the ball every possession where most teams have the ball in multiple players hands.

Lantz has been a multiple year varsity player with a bunch of experience, but yet in some games I've seen he looks to be playing scared and out of position. Can't say why but he is not used the way we would think.

Bruskotter was 10-25 from field (40%), rest of the team was 9-35 (26%). And yes, Lex (last night and last year’s tourney game) and OG game, Bruskotter has been over 30 and Shelby lost.

I can understand your feelings though with such a veteran caliber team. I’ve not been a big fan of whatever offense they have run the last two years. There is a lot of passing around the three point line until they either chuck up a three or Bruskotter drives the lane. It doesn’t seem like there is a lot of movement without the ball or many screens.

Agree 100%. Since we are being coaches on here, I dont know why Lantz and Ramsey don’t post up. Both are 6’5 or bigger and athletic. They usually have the 2nd and 3rd biggest /best defenders on them. Get them the balll!
