Very hard fought, physical game. Great high school contest, contrast of styles! St Mary’s deserves credit for playing to win, instead trying to avoid a blowout. Went on EVERY 4th down, including inside their own 20 and 30 respectively. Prayer circle after the game showed their class. Kudos to both teams for a great game

Everyone in the box from St. Mary's were terrific people. I was able to hear a bit of one of the radio calls, and they did an awesome job. This game reminded me a bit Perkins Regional Semi-Final game against Wickliffe back in 1999. Not every aspect of it, but Wickliffe was arguably the Pirates toughest game (perhaps besides Clyde) to that point in the season. This was going to be a game (not unlike Wickliffe 1999) where the last team to possess the ball was going to win. I tip my cap to the Roughriders. A very good team, and they represented the game of high school football tremendously well.

Was at the game tonight and there was an incident after the game between the refs and some St Mary’s fans.

Perkins fans had to be having flash backs when Collier got stripped for the a fumble with two minutes to go in the game. Why put the ball in the air in that situation? Keep it on the ground and keep the clock running

Redskin we agree. Pound the rock and keep the clock running. That almost created a condition where you have a 28-28 ball game. Pirate D was stout and secured it, but yikes man. Could have ended differently.

After going to this game last night I think we (Perkins fans) need to really pump the breaks on the state title and beating Glenville talk. SMM essentially had their way with Perkins defense all night. Ran the ball at will and Perkins really didn't have an answer for it. Doing all of this with a very undersized line. Perkins was much bigger up front. I also have concerns with Lesch's decision making at times. While I think he is a very talented quarterback, he needs to take care of the ball. Perkins needs to really focus and have a good week of prep this week if they want to beat West Holmes. Glenville will be a whole other animal. I really think they are at least 3 scores better than everybody in this division.

Perkins being pushed to the very end by St. Mary's Memorial may have been a good thing for them. It sure will give the coaches something to get on the kids about. Also help the players to refocus. West Holmes is no slouch and can be explosive. Pirates defense will have to be ready for that. Should be a good game. May be at Mansfield Arlin Field or Ashland.

I think Perkins is breathing a sigh of relief this morning. Got punched in the mouth the first half and played possibly their least efficient game on offense. Both spell disaster against a team like St Marys.
The game boiled down to 3 plays in my opinion. Converting a 4th and goal from the 20, a 4th and goal to start the second half and a well executed onside kick following the TD.
In the end it’s all about survival this time of year and Perkins was able to do just that.

Considering the situation in Mansfield this week I have a hard time thinking the OHSAA will decide to play a game at Arlin field. If it wasn’t safe for them to host their own playoff game they should not be allowed to host other schools.

That variant of the wing-T is designed to overcome larger teams like Perkins. Perkins has also been pretty solid against the run when presented with more traditional offense. So take a breathe and realize that Perkins will never see this offense again and drawing broad conclusions off this game is not wise. Lesch should not have throw that ball up for grabs in the fourth. He trusted his WR a little too much on that one. The real questioning though should be for the guy who called the play? Keep the ball on the ground keep the chains moving and get out of there with a win.

I bring up the size of the line because if you're going to get pushed around by a group that all collectively weigh under 200 pounds, what is going to happen when you run in to a Glenville team with a couple of D1 guys up front who are much bigger. Not to mention they have one of the best backs in the state running behind them. If you want to win that game, it starts up front.
I'm not sure it's fair to hold Perkins to Glenville's standard, but I do because of all the hype of this team winning a state title.

Ample seating, concessions and parking. But while the field is one of nicest natural grass surfaces in the state the OHSAA of course only wants artificial turf.

Something I took away from that game was SMM was more physically aggressive. I look at my opinion as a whole and not based on a few plays or a quarter, but watching the LB’s last night I didn’t see a lot of punishing hits, taking on blockers, sealing the edges, and giving a hit instead of taking a hit. There were moments of good and great hits, but overall if the pirates plan on taking down Glenville you have to be better than that.

Perkins benefited at the end of the game of a no call pass interference. Really surprised that it was an Erie County crew that had the game.
Perkins honestly should be more worried about winning than theatrics. The CPR on another lineman in my opinion is very tacky if not a flag. Pretty tasteless and should be addressed. Probably not something to make fun of, right? Disappointed that the higher ups must be ok with that.

Could have ended differently. St Mary’s was definitely going for 2 and the WIN had they scored on that final possession. They played the whole game that way. Wanted it to be a one possession game, with a chance to win it in the 4th.

I don't think there's been a punt yet... You are correct. Not even on a 4th and 2 from their own 13 yard line. Gutsy call from St. Mary's Perkins fan obviously, but I LOVED that philosophy. Perkins has multiple 99 yard drives this year. It’s smarter to try and keep the ball, besides they were rarely stopped for anything less than 3 yards all night. St Mary’s honestly would rather a quick score to get the ball back and run another 10 minutes off the clock. Glad that game is in the rear view 😅
