Swim season is here! Who will win the final NOL boys title in swimming?
Shelby, last year's champion, loses almost half of their varsity team, with 4 out of their 9 swimmers graduating. These will be hard spots to fill, as 3 of these seniors (John, Emerson and Davis) made up their two 1st place relays, leaving only Mayer from their top relays. The remaining swimmers should be able to hold their own, but I don't believe they'll have enough to compete with the top NOL teams.
Ontario, last year's runner up, loses only 2 of their 8 varsity members, both of which only scored a handful of points for the team. The two Cordrey boys and Whittaker should lead the team again next year, but may struggle (as they did this past year) with finding a strong fourth member to make a solid relay. I hear they might be gaining a strong freshman swimmer, though, which could be a deciding factor in who wins the NOL crown.
Sandusky, last year's third place finisher, loses only 1 of their 10 varsity members (Grady), who helped their 200 free relay place second but should be replaced easily. Aside from Ahlers and Sharp, Sandusky's team is average but have enough average swimmers to gain a lot of points. I believe one of their incoming freshman will have a big impact and should be one of the team's top boys.
Norwalk, last year's fourth place finisher, loses none of their varsity members and while they may not struggle in numbers, I believe they will struggle scoring points. Their team, for the most part, is very average and doesn't have any swimmers who dominate in any events, but again should have the numbers to pick up some point here and there.
Columbian, last year's fifth place finisher, loses their top guy Lewis to graduation, which will hurt their team greatly. Though they still have Ramsdell and Reinhart to score points in the stroke events, Lewis's graduation only leaves them with three swimmers. They should have a few more joining the team this year but will still struggle putting together a solid relay and scoring points in the free events.
Willard, last year's sixth place finisher, loses their top guy to graduation, which leaves the team with only three swimmers. They have a handful of experienced swimmers coming up, though, which should help them rack up points in the stroke events especially and should push them past some of their NOL opponents.
I predict a close race between Ontario, Sandusky and Willard for the title... I'll pick Ontario to win it, followed by Willard, Sandusky, Columbian, Shelby and Norwalk. Best of luck to all swimmers in the final season of the NOL!
