Ontario has 3 8th grade kids who stood out to me. #30,,,,#24,,,,and #20
These kids will be good in HS. The Willard kids have good size for 8th grade. A nice PG and they play hard and are pretty athletic. Their Coach who is the Varsity football coach doesn't say too much. More of a parental presence as I don't think it's his forte. This group will be the JV team next year. As the whole world knows- the Willard fans haven't had much to cheer about for what seems like eternity in Hoops and Football. I think this group and whats behind them leads a turnaround. Our new Junior high gym was packed on one side for this game and I felt a little bit of electricity as fan for my School which hasn't been there in awhile. Sat next to Coach Haas for this game which is pretty cool to listen to his comments. He'd have done wonders with this group I think.

Ontario led 15-5 after one, 20-15 at half, still up 2 after 3, In the 4th Willard got hot from behind the 3-point line. And made their free throws down the stretch to win by 6. A nice group of players with some size and well coached. It will be interesting to see if any will play varsity next year and how many will be on the JV team. Before this year Balogh has only had 1 Freshman play varsity in 31 years. He has 2 this year, one a very good. Then there is a big drop off in talent in the Freshman class. I don't think the Freshman team will win a game this year. It is thought at this point that 4 of the 8th graders will be moved to JV next year, to fill that void. I don't always agree with how much the 8th grade coach plays his 2nd 5, but with so many playing JV next year, the importance of playing time for the 2nd 5 is of importance.

Could have been different this year had they been healthy. I usually hate to see to many freshman moved up. Specially to varsity as it normally indicates the lack of talent in the above classes. But sometimes you have that special player or group.

I agree, the crowd enthusiasm was exceptional for a middle school game, haven't seen that in a high school game all year. There is alot of hope in Willard for this 8th grade class, coupled with a few from the 7th grade class. Ontario has a nice class of 2021. Maybe more athletic than Willard, but a huge size advantage to Willard. Willard is 7/8 deep with this group....to the point where they don't lose much with subs. Ontario can't say the same. Willard's 7th has 1 kid that stands out, he's bigger and more athletic than most 7th graders. However, they have 3/4 other kids that have a big upside if they put in the time.

Agree, Ontario's coach always goes 10 deep which against a Willard or Shelby is a disadvantage. Also, by far his 2 best ball handlers are both starters. He should have a rotation that always has one or the other on the floor against a good team, instead he will have them on the bench at the same time. Which against Willard's extended 1-3-1 with their length and athleticism is a problem.

If this statement is in reference to Willard I would assume "many" will play either Varsity or JV. Willard has won how many games between JV and Varsity this season if the ship is going to turn they have to use the upcoming talent to build for the future... JMO

With regards to the Ontario coach playing his 2nd group of 5. Very smart move and I agree 100%. This will payoff down the road for Ontario. Keep the kids in the program and let them develop a little bit. Nothing I disagree with more than watching a 7th 8th or 9th grade coach letting most of his roster sit the bench the whole game in football or basketball because he's going all in for the WIN with his starters. That cripples a program IMO. If you keep your whole roster or most of it engaged in the process--all of a sudden practice is more fun and the competition makes everyone better.
Another thing I don't like is rushing kids up multiple levels just because they may have matured a little early. Going from 8th to JV is one thing---but when you ask a 14 year old kid to battle a mature 18 year old in hoops or Football--big mistake in my book. Let them develop normally,,let them have success against kids roughly their own age rather than get their butts kicked against Senior and lose confidence and not have fun in the process. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a kid put up multiple levels only to get smoked then sit the bench and lose confidence and lastly--stop improving.

bk, Ontario has history of keeping 15 kids on their junior high teams so playing 10 regularly seems to make sense. The idea may be to make sure a late developing kid does not get over looked. But someone could point out it has not worked as of late as the varsity team has a class mixture that is not common for them. I do agree it makes no sense to have a full junior high or freshman roster and only play 5-6 kids.

Ontario's uncommon class mixture is due to the Junior class, which is now comprised of just 1 player. As 8th graders and Freshman they lost maybe a total of 2 or 3 games. If they were still playing, their starting lineup from back then would now be 6-7, 6-6, 6-3, 6-2 and 5-10. A lot of reasons were given for not playing, none of which was, they didn't have enough basketballs to go around. The class ahead of them, this year's Senior class, had 7 on the varsity to start the year. You can see it would have been a little crowded.
Maybe keeping that many kids around and playing so many in Junior High can sometimes be problamatic, by the time they're Seniors and Juniors, as we see this year

Freshman Norwalk 38, Ontario 28. The first Ontario Freshman game I've see this year, it was painful. I doubt they win a game this year. There are 4 players on the 8th grade team that are currently more talented than anyone on the 9th grade team.
8th - Ontario 39, Ashland 28 after a 15 point lead in the 1st half. 7th - Ashland 51, Ontario 32 after Ontario had a 4 point lead at half. St.Petes might be their only win this year.

Willard- Ontario continues to dump at the Varsity/Jv level, and you have stated the Freshman team is one of the worst. It looks like the dumping has trickled down in to the junior high ranks as well. What's going on down there? A once storied program has turned in to a dumpy pile of defecation. Doesn't look like Ontario will be any good any time soon, sort of like you in bridge. Any correlation?
