Since Louisville is named for King Louis (Loo-ee) XVI of France, the latter half of the word is ville (Vill) which is a village or town.
There is only one correct pronunciation, and that is "Loo-ee-ville". Anything else is simply wrong.
I have never understood how folks came to use the slang pronunciation, uttering "Loo-uh-vuhl". It isn't even close, and it sounds incredibly stupid, especially when television broadcasters and news people follow suit and butcher the name. These are supposed to be educated professionals, so we know they're one of two things... stupid or willfully ignorant. Either way, it sort of undermines any faith we're expected to place in their capabilities.
It hasn't always been this way. I know for a fact as recently as the 1960's (back when people took enough pride in themselves to at least try to speak properly), the correct pronunciation was used by the vast majority.
In the '70's, a local TV personality Ange Humphrey mounted a sort of campaign to encourage the incorrect pronunciation, and perhaps caused the mispronunciation to spread and make popular, the current trend.
This butchering of the American language has been a point of irritation and contention for me.

A really interesting one is Newark OH. People born and raised there pronounce it nurk.

I knew that our Ohio Louisville is Lewisville.
Anyone on hear ever stationed while in the Navy at Norfolk, Virginia?
The slang pronunciation is bordering on the obscene....lol
Instead of the correctly pronounced Nor-folk, the common slang pronunciation is Naw-fuk.....lol

Out of stater's usually pronounce Lima, Ohio as Leema, as in Lima, Peru.

Living in Wooster, it was always frustrating to hear newscasters or others call it Woooooooster (rhyming with rooster or booster.) The correct pronunciation was the "oo" rhyme with book or look.

Then there's Huron, He-your-ron. Some pronounce like "Urine", Huron high cheerleaders say in their cheers "He-Ron".

I think that I can shed a little light on the subject. A lot of this comes from the Appalachian area. When the Scottish and the Irish left for the new world they brought their style of langrage with them. They almost always shorten words like we might say you all but in their speech it was shorten to Y'ALL. After WW2 they wanted better jobs and living so a lot of them came north to places like Detroit, Cleveland and other places. They brought with them their style of langrage. they came from West Virginia, and southeast Ohio. These people I always called them YANKEE HILLBILLY'S. So that is why you hear a lot of Add to pronunciations of names. Blame it on my ancestors.  |

England has some weird pronunciations for cities as well, such as Leicester, which is pronounced "Less-ter" and Worcester which is pronounced "Wuhs-ter" (like the Wooster, Ohio pronunciation picabo says is the correct one)
The name of that second one made its way across the Atlantic to Colonial America, as there is a city and county in Massachusetts with the same spelling and pronunciation.

When I first met my college roommate and we were talking about where we were from. He said Wooster, and at some point I reiterated the location, whereupon he says to me "It's not Wooster like rooster, but it's Wooster like wood." I laughed my *** off and have never mispronounced it since. Damn Woosterites!!! ;-)

The earliest human remains are 194,000 years old. Only darker skin toned hominids were on this planet for 190,000 years. A heck of a head start. Just anthropological facts.

I think it is, although it seems to be somewhat racially related, but not in all cases...
