Poor job of coaching by McGuff and Mitching playing out of control, forcing shots and not passing to open teammates. Even coaches of McGuff's caliber can have games like this. I think Kelsey was trying to take too much on her shoulders and when the shots weren't dropping, the problems compounded. The credentials speak for themselves, two time B1G 'player of the year' and two time All-American. Yes, even a player of her stature is prone to have a game like this. Unfortunately, they blew an opportunity to secure a #2 or #3 seed at NCAA tourney. Give Purdue all the credit for maintaining control of the tempo most of the game and not allowing OSU to get into their transition game. Looking forward, this puts additional interest on how they step up their game in the coming NCAA tournament. Still like their chances of making the final four, especially if Stephanie Mauvunga is back.

The NCAA selection committee gave little love to the 26-6 Buckeyes, granting them a 5 seed. Both 3 seed Texas (23-8) and 4 seed Kentucky (21-10) had worse records and lower ranked in the latest A.P. poll (#14 & #18, vs. OSU #11 ranking). The same scenario for 30-2, #4 ranked A.P., and B1G Tournament Champion Maryland receiving a 3 seed, while lower ranked (#9 A.P.) and lesser record (27-5) Kentucky gets the 2 seed.
The Buckeyes take the court in Lexington Friday at 2:30 pm , vs. Western Kentucky (27-6)
Unlike Maryland, the Buckeyes don't face the spector of squaring off against juggernaut UConn until the Final Four....If they make it that far.
The big question remains if redshirt Jr. sensation Stephanie Mauvunga will be back at center for the Buckeyes this Friday or at a later NCAA tournament game.

The Buckeyes got the opening win of the NCAA tournament, topping the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 70-63, in the first round of the tournament. The Lady Toppers were riding a 12-game winning streak that dates back to Feb.2 as they captured both the regular season and Conference USA tournament titles.
Despite All-American Kelsey Mitchell having an off night, seeing a lot of special coverages, her team mates stepped up. Stepping up big time was Asia Doss, coming off the bench and showing her great ball handling and passing skills, while garnering 15 points.
Shayla Cooper has been outstanding in here role at center, in replacement for the injured Stephanie Mauvunga, who has been sidelined since her Feb. 4th foot injury. During that time, Shayla has averaged 14.8 PPG and 8.6 boards per game. The good news, Stephanie has been taking practice warmups and will be primed to play for the Buckeyes at lexintgton Sunday afternoon vs. the Kentucky Wildcats. Stephanie will undoubtedly be tabbed to spell Shayla at the low post, giving her needed rest for minutes here and there, which will be a plus. Stephanie averaged double-doubles in 21 games before she went down and was the Big Ten's leading rebounder at that point.

Doesn't look good for Ohio State, only beating a 14 seed by less than double figures in their first game.

Doesn't look good for Ohio State, only beating a 14 seed by less than double figures in their first game. Actually, Western Kentucky was a #12 seed and the Buckeyes had a 14 point lead with 4 minutes remaining in that one, but credit WKU who refused to die easy. I guess you could say the same for Buckeyes next opponent, #3 seed Kentucky had the scare of their lives against #13 seed Belmont, avoiding the upset and finally decided at the free throw line in the final seconds. The Wildcats will enjoy a significant advantage, playing on their home court. Go Bucks!

The Buckeyes led this one from start to finish. Still think they were improperly seeded and a five seed was an insult to the Big Ten regular season champions. Turns out, they didn't need the sevices of Stephanie Mauvunga who was in street clothes. They will play the winner of the Purdue/N.D. game in the Sweet 16.

much different play today by the lady bucks Indeed..... The Purdue/N.D. matchup at 9 pm will be interesting. I'm sure the girls would love a rematch with Purdue to gain some revenge for the B1G tourney upset loss to the Boilermakers, but the 31-3 Irish presents the greatest of challenges. Whoever, they meet at Rupp Arena Thursday the 24th.

Notre Dame's top player, Turner, is out for their Sweet 16 game against the Bucks

Notre Dame's top player, Turner, is out for their Sweet 16 game against the Bucks This is a terrible loss for their team. The Fighting Irish will sorely feel Brianna Turner's absence. She's the team's leading scorer (15.3 points per game) and rebounder (7.1 rebounds per game). Her 86 blocked shots (2.46 blocks per game) are also 24th in the nation. She led the ACC in blocked shots and FG % (59.3%) She was ACC Defensive Player of the Year. If my memory serves me right, ND was up 14-15 points when she went down. The Irish looked like a different team with Turner on the bench, lost at times. What would have been a solid win, turned into an O.T. nailbiter.

BUCKEYES IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
Ohio State is making its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance. OSU has an overall record of 28-23 in the NCAA Tournament. OSU has made the Sweet 16 eleven times (1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2016, 2017). This is the first time the Buckeyes have advanced to the Sweet 16 in back-to-back years since the run of five-straight appearances from 1985-89. OSU has been to the Elite 8 three times (1985, 1987, 1993). The best tournament run for the Buckeyes was their runner-up finish in 1993. This is just the fourth time the Buckeyes have earned a No. 5-seed and the first since 2015. Ohio State was a 5-seed in each of its first two NCAA Tournament appearances in 1982 and 1984. Both of those games ended in losses. The most recent 5-seed was in 2015 when the Buckeyes beat James Madison in the opening round before losing to the Stephanie Mavunga led Tar Heels of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Big Ten Conference teams have gone 22-5 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament over the last five seasons. Kelsey Mitchell is averaging 25.1 points and has made at least two three-pointers in her each of her seven NCAA Tournament games. Freshman forward Tori McCoy is 11-of-12 from the floor and averaging 13.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in her first two NCAA Tournament games. Shayla Cooper grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds and dished-out a career-high tying six assists in the opening round game vs. Western Kentucky. Asia Doss notched season-highs of 15 points and six assists in the opening round win over WKU.

Notre Dame players and coaches MUCH more intelligent than Ohio State's. McGuff needs to hire a REALLY good defensive coach, he isn't one. Obviously, you haven't watched too many Ohio State games this season. His girls usually put it all out on the floor, playing their style of end line to end line, pressing, trapping defense. Their defensive effort was both ineffective and absent at times in this one however. Much credit must be given to a red hot shooting ND team that shot the lights out tonight. At one 10 minute interval, they made 13 consecutive field goals, finishing near 60% for the game. This was the greatest shooting performance I have seen this season, (particulary stroking the threes) by anyone, Men, Women, H.S., coljege or pro. Kelsey Mitchell was off to a promising start in this one, with 12 points to start the 1st Qtr., but she was basically AWOL the remainder of the game, ending up with 18 points for the game. Stephanie Mauvunga was inserted midway through the 1st qtr., quickly taking the ball down low, posting up and spinning for an impressive lay-in, but the remainder of her appearances, her long absence showed the rusty, ineffectiveness that should not come as a surprise to anyone. There is much to be excited about for 2017-19, losing only Senior Shayla Cooper at low post, while returning the team intact, with All-American and Big Ten 'Player of the Year' Chelsey Mitchell for her Sr. year and an outstanding recruiting class.

When Ohio State tried full court pressure it got beat for baskets by due to better coaching and more intelligent players doing exactly what they were coached to do. Ask yourself, why was it only used in desperation instead of the entire game? Ohio State had more depth and was more athletic. What was lacking? Mitchell was held well below her average due to a good defensive plan by ND coaching which was executed by smart ND players. Mitchell is not really a great player unless she can score 30 when it is really needed, in a game like this. ND shot so well from the outside due to wide open outside shots because of poor defense. Ohio State got beat on drives to the baskets due to poor defense by Ohio State. Ohio State got beat due to poor pick and roll defense. Ohio State, with all of their offensive talent, will get no further in the tournament until they are taught to play sound defense by someone not on the coaching staff now. You can't beat Top Ten teams that play good defense, you can't outscore them. ND didn't have their best player, but it was no contest, because ND was a MUCH better defensive team due to better coaching.

"More intelligent players" was the moronic comment from commentator Beth Mowens. That left everyone in the room shaking their heads. How this woman was able to arrive at an intelligence quotient from her distant perch is beyond me. The ND passing game was amazing and their blistering shooting performance was beyond amazing. Great passing and ball movement was instrumental in attaining consistent open looks at the basket. Even open looks doesn't always guarantee the ability to hit nothing but net like we witnessed last evening. The attacks on Kevin McGuff are totally unmerited. His record speaks for itself. Stroking them to that degree would have even UConn vulnerable.

I did not hear Beth Mowens. Those were the obvious observations when I watched this game. I am a HUGE Ohio State fan, but I call it as I see.
You still don't get it, UCONN plays MUCH MUCH better defense than Ohio State is COACHED to do. The on ball pressure by UCONN will not allow as man wide open shots by ND. McGuff is a Top 10 recruiter, but that's not enough to have a Top Ten program. If he doesn't produce on the court, the recruiting will become more difficult.

I think we can both agree, Kevin McGuff would be the first to say the ND game was one of their worst defensive efforts of the year.
They haven't produced on the court.....huh??? These girls just completed a superlative, 28 win season! These girls just won the regular season Big Ten title! These girls averaged a record 86.6 ppg! These girls managed nearly 8 steals per game, with their hounding, pressing, trapping defense, fortified by their deep and talented bench.
This is a top ten program year in and year out since McDuff has taken over the reigns. The exciting part is, they lost only one Sr., so expectations are extremely high for next season.
Compared to the dismal display and results of the men's program this year, any criticism is misdirected.

Has McGuff made it to a National Championship game? How many Elite Eights? How many Big Ten regular season Titles? How many Big Ten Tournament Titles? He has an over abundance of talent. Enough talent to make a Final Four. A Top Ten recruiter, but won't be a Top Ten producer until he gets someone to teach his athletes to play Top Ten Defense. His accomplishments have come strictly on the offensive end of the floor.
Why was there no successful hounding full court pressure against ND? Who was not as athletic nor as deep as Ohio State.

I truly feel that is in the cards. "Why was there no successful hounding full court pressure against ND? Who was not as athletic nor as deep as Ohio State." Very good question. I honestly, can't answer that one. I know he had them come out in a 2-3 zone to counteract their strong guard play, but switched to man to man 2nd half, despite foul trouble, particularly Kelsey with three at the time. Actually, Kevin took his Xavier girls to the Elite Eight. This is only his 5th year at Ohio State and his record has improved every single year since he arrived. His coaching resume' is quite impressive. Ohio State paid Washington 1.75 million dollars to get him. Head coaching record

There has to be an, as yet untold story behind two promising freshmen, that contributed significantly in their first year. Both girls are tremendous losses. Think Kiara Lewis was B1G Freshman of the Year or a finalist for the award and she was a starter the latter portion of the season.
Torri McCoy was a 5* McDonald's All-American out of St Thomas Moor, who everyone was expecting to commit to Tennessee, before the Buckeyes landed this smooth, talented 6-4 post, power forward. The skys the limit with this girls potential.
Given the fact, there were no recruits this year, wonder if we will be seeing some hasty attempts to fill in a new player or two. After losing Shayla Cooper to graduation and Losing another post player in McCoy, it will be interesting how McGuff adapts and reacts to this.

I wonder if they resented the Assistant coach Mitchell who has his daughter on the team. There was some in fighting going on during the season. They need to get it together if they wanna make a Final 4 run next season .

Granted the 2 freshman started at the end of the year, but they have nobody to replace those 3. Heck they got embarrassed by Notre Dame in the sweet 16 with all their players and the Irish without their best player
